Touch Sight Camera For The Blind

Touch Sight Camera For The Blind

This could possibly be the first camera in the world for the blind, known as the “Touch Sight”. While you might think this is redundant, but the “Touch Sight” camera works as follows.

“Touch Sight is a revolutionary digital camera designed for visually impaired people. Simple features make it easy to use, including a unique feature which records sound for three seconds after pressing the shutter button. The user can then use the sound as reference when reviewing and managing the photos. Touch Sight does not have an LCD but instead has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface, allowing the user to touch their photo. The sound file and picture document combine to become a touchable photo that is saved in the device and can be uploaded to share with others–and downloaded to other Touch Sight cameras.”

Pretty interesting - hopefully the idea will be able to make it to the mass market in the near future.

Philips USB Flash Drives

Philips USB Flash Drives

Who knew that the folks at Philips do have a sense of humor after all, with the Happy Laura and Naughty Raymond robots coming in the USB flash drive form factor. Of course, they come studded with Swarovski crystals all over to add to the overall bling look. Data is stored by snapping off their respective heads, and both Laura and Raymond are able to carry up to 2GB of data before their brains start oozing out from their ears. It will cost you €150 a pop, which is way too expensive for the budget-conscious minded, especially with just 2GB on offer.

Hotspot Device from Chrysler

Hotspot Device from Chrysler

Chrysler is said to offer a new car cellular/Wi-Fi hotspot from August 25th onwards, and will work with all 2009 Chrysler models as well as specific earlier year models, enabling these vehicles to let you surf the Internet no matter where you are. This is made possible as the $499 router grabs EV-DO and WiMAX signals wherever you go, and since it is based on EV-DO, chances are this will have something to do with either Sprint or Verizon, or both. In addition to the initial $499 price tag, you will also have to fork out $29 monthly. I guess the people who benefit the most are the backseat drivers since your eyes will, you know, be concentrating on the road.

Nokia To Have AMOLED Handsets?

Nokia To Have AMOLED Handsets?

It would look as though Nokia will be introducing AMOLED displays in their future handsets as the Finnish cell phone manufacturer have already set the capability of AMOLED development as a condition for the selection of its panel suppliers. Currently, the two panel suppliers for Nokia, AU Optronics (AUO) and TPO Display, are working on new AMOLED applications. It would be interesting to see just how much more clearer an AMOLED display would look like on a cell phone, but chances are the first batch of such handsets will come with a handsome premium.

Dell Precision M4400 Workstation Laptop

Dell Precision M4400 Workstation Laptop

Dell has released a new mobile workstation called Precision M4400. The presence of a QuadroFX card and support for up to 8GB of memory are hints that it could be efficiently used for heavy computer graphics (offline) rendering. Note that it has been reported elsewhere that it could support up to 16GB, 8GB is the only number shown on the official specifications. An entry-level configuration with 8GB costs around $2800 and interestingly enough, the operating system does not say whether or not Vista 64-bit is installed when you select more than 4GB, so make sure that Vista 64 is what you are getting. It’s kind of expensive, but if you want a 8GB laptop (and depending on your work, it might be a really good thing) you don’t have much of a choice. Hopefully, consumer laptops will follow…

USB-powered Batman Spotlight

USB-powered Batman Spotlight

Granted, turning this USB-powered Batman spotlight won’t bring the Dark Knight over to your place, but it might attract negative attention from your boss for goofing around. Still, imagine how cool it is of having something like this in your cubicle, where you can summon the resident tech savior to your side by lighting this up instead of using the local PABX phone system? Folks with a penchant for DIY and some extra time on their hands can check it out how to make the USB-powered Batman spotlight. You’ll need to have a couple of old bottle caps, tinfoil, a cheap USB light, some cardboard, pocket change, soldering iron, hot glue gun and paint to get started.
