Maple Phone Concept Design

Maple Phone Concept Design

Talk about being a wooden conversationalist! The Maple Phone design from Koreans Hyun Jin Yoon and Eun Hak Lee is something totally different - where the keypad is covered in a thin wooden film, lighting up when you need to use it. This is somewhat akin to the original Motorola RAZR in terms of functionality, so hopefully the user interface won’t be as much of a pain to use as Motorola’s offering. In addition to touch-sensitive buttons, the Maple phone also comes with a camera (of unknown megapixel count, but since this is a concept why not throw in a number like 5?), measuring 4.5cm x 10.4cm x 9.8 cm. When you’re done with it, I suppose you can strip the Maple phone and turn it into firewood to keep yourself warm during the cold winter months.

Ikea Entering Mobile Market

Ikea Entering Mobile Market

Ikea, famous for their range of affordably stylish furniture (and meatballs), are now expanding their business by turning into mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) - reselling wireless services. The first Ikea to kick off its MVNO status would be in the UK, running on the German-owned T-Mobile network. Dubbed Family Mobile, this service is available only to Ikea loyalty card holders and function as a pay-as-you-go service. There is no word on whether Ikea will introduce this service to other countries, but I guess the UK is a testing ground before a firm decision can be made with regard to the rest of the world.

Nissan Eco Pedal

Nissan Eco Pedal

No, the Nissan Eco Pedal is not made out of environmentally friendly materials, but instead helps motorists to save gas (while helping you build up your calf muscles). How does it do this? Well, the technology involved will make the gas pedal press upward whenever the vehicle is moving too quickly for your own good. According to Nissan, this system is able to improve fuel efficiency by up to 10%. The Eco Pedal has been programmed to calculate the most efficient rate of acceleration in a vehicle, and it might cause the driver to be frustrated with their cars especially when they feel like tearing up the asphalt. Good thing Nissan has the sense to include the option to disable the Eco Pedal where necessary - like overtaking another car, for example.

Electracity City Car Concept

Electracity City Car Concept

Piers Prendergast of London has come up with the Electracity car concept which offers a generous trunk space - something most small car designs miss out on. The extending rear section of its chassis is able to fold out each time you require additional space to place all your stuff, be it groceries or suitcases. No idea on the mileage of this, but being a concept, I suppose you could throw out some reasonably efficient figures without having anyone dispute that.

Possible MacBook Leak

Possible MacBook Leak

What you see on the right are images afrom a Taiwanese site that shows off what is possibly Apple’s new MacBook. Assuming this is the real thing, it will come with a metal laptop lid which pretty much fits the direction where rumors of aluminum parts being used in the next iteration. Well, Apple has always been pretty secretive about their new products, so I won’t be surprised if this isn’t the real deal when Apple announces their new range of MacBooks. What do you think?

ImmobiTag Protects Your Bicycle

ImmobiTag Protects Your Bicycle

ImmobiTag is something that people who own a bicycle might want to take note of. If you’re worried about your previous bicycle being stolen, the ImmobiTag is a device that can be attached to your bike, via a one-time installation method, and features a unique ID number that users will register on the Immobilise website. The installation method should be secure, as the only way to remove it is to cut the bike’s frame, which would make stealing it kind of pointless. In the event the bike is recovered, the police can just scan the tag to verify if you’re the rightful owner of the bike by comparing the information with the Immobilise database. For just $25, this seems like a good investment, especially if it helps safeguard your bicycle, which would definitely have cost more than $25. It even comes with a nice set of warning stickers to let thieves know that your bicycle is protected (so it might be easier to steal someone else’s bike).

GA-KO Alarm Clock

GA-KO Alarm Clock

Metal Gear Solid fans will definitely clamor for the GA-KO Alarm Clock from Konami - the egg timer whose claim to fame is inside the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 game on the PS3. While it could still be used to time your egg frying sessions in the kitchen, this would find a better use right beside your bed. In order to sell it at a higher price while increasing demand for it, Konami decided to manufacture just 2,000 pieces - which isn’t a lot by any means. It is already sold out at this point in time, with more stock arriving next week so keep a lookout on the product page. The GA-KO Alarm Clock will set you back by $36.70.

Touch Sight For The Visually Impaired

Touch Sight For The Visually Impaired

Touch Sight is an interesting camera, mainly because it’s designed for visually impaired people. Since a conventional camera won’t do the trick, as a still picture isn’t good enough, the Touch Sight records sounds and displays imagery via 3D embossing, this will allow the user to remember the moment via two other senses, namely hearing and touch. Instead of using a LCD, Touch Sight uses a flexible Braille display sheet, which will display a 3D image by embossing the surface, which will allow the user to touch the image, and when coupled with the recorded sound becomes a touchable “photo” which can also be uploaded to share with other people.

Suzukaze Air-conditioned Cushion

Suzukaze Air-conditioned Cushion

Sitting down on the same chair for hours on end certainly does not bode well for your rear end, especially for those working in hot and humid conditions without the benefit of air-condition. Enter the Suzukaze air-conditioned cushion - this specially designed device keeps you higher than your chair while pulling in air from the surrounding area and pushing it up to cool down your entire rear end. There are several to choose from, where the Standard model is battery-powered and comes with Super Spacer material within, while the High Grade model relies on hardier dual-layer Super Spacer with a touch sensitive switch to turn it off when you don’t need additional cooling in order to save battery power. Hopefully you won’t fart while sitting on one of these lest your killer odor spreads around the office in record time.
