Fans of the original Beverly Hills 90210 series will be thrilled to know that the CBS store is currently offering chance to pick up a limited edition 90210 engraved iPod nano along with each purchase of every 90210 season on DVD. Hmmm, guess those who grew up on the series have not yet moved on to Blu-ray, eh? This special edition iPod nano will come in black or silver colors, and you will be able to choose from 4GB and 8GB capacities. They’re more expensive (duh!) compared to the vanilla iPod nano, where the 4GB and 8GB models will retail for $219 and $269, respectively. There will be a limited run of 2,000 units, so expect a few to pop up on eBay pretty soon.

These latest speakers from Gadget4All are designed to look like shells, and can be changed via a USB port. Of course, the shell design probably doesn’t do anything to improve the audio quality for this speaker, but it does make it stand out from the crowd, albeit only a little. This funnily shaped speaker is currently going for $12.50 at Gadget4All, and is available in either green or silver colors.

As with any new hardware release, it makes sense for Lite-On’s new DVD writers to come with a speedy 22x speed as well as SmartErase. As you can tell from the latter’s name, this is a new data erasing feature that works with DVD+/-R (DL) and CD-R discs, overwriting existing data with random and meaningless characters so that nobody else will be able to read the disc regardless of the drive they use, enabling you to effectively keep what you want to be private that way forever. The SmartErase function has been included inside Nero 7 Essentials and will come bundled with each purchase. There is no word on pricing, although this new DVD writer will hit Europe sometime in October.

It looks like the folks at Engadget Chinese have received a slide image which shows ASUS’ Eee PC roadmap. So how many are they planning to release? How about 23? Based on the slide from the picture, they’ve separated the Eee PC for different types of users, ranging from kids to “elite”, whatever they mean by that anyways. The “ultimate” series should be quite intriguing for users who want more out of their Eee PCs, and it’s anyone’s guess what “PRO Fashion” is supposed to mean. More choice can only be a good thing for the consumer, unless there is way too much choice that makes it become irritating - oh and they might be getting more expensive too…

They say that nothing is free in this world, and that saying holds true at least for iPhoneinfused - a company that will unlock your iPhone 2.0 software, providing you with freedom from exclusive wireless providers’ expensive roaming charges, all for the relatively low price of $39.95. Unfortunately, they have yet to show the method to confirm it is not a complete scam, so it does leave some questions including whether they’re riding on the iPhone Dev Team’s solution. Try at your own risk. For iPhone/iPod touch owners, at what cost are you willing to go for a jailbreak and unlock?

FAK3 is pronounced “FAKE” under geek speak, and this home design project sees a central, multifunctional area that brings together a range of activities including dining, study, and entertainment, helping you save space at the same time. Of course, trying to read a book on one side with your partner watching the TV at full blast on the other side isn’t going to help much, but at least you don’t have to worry about living in a cramped studio apartment now, citing the sorry lack of space, do you? The FAK3 elliptical cabinet can rotate 360 degrees, and that is made possible by a single push of a button. Of course, it will take quite some time before this idea becomes viable for most homes, so it looks as though this will remain in the concept realm for quite some time to come.

Asus has a brand new wireless N USB adapter in the form of the aptly named USB-N11. This device comes with a button that when pused, it will automagically create a protected wireless environment without having to earn a rocket science degree in the first place. The USB-N11 is fully certified with the 802.11n wireless standard, and claims to offer a data transfer rate of up to 5 times faster throughput @ 90Mbps compared to 802.11g standards - that’s all in theory, of course, and the proof is in the pudding so I’ll take this figure with a pinch of salt at this point in time. It is also pocketable, measuring a mere 84mm x 21mm x 11mm. No idea on how much it will cost though, but good thing it wasn’t named under the super-diluted Eee banner.

Wibrain’s upcoming I1 UMPC is tipped for an October release, and it will come equipped with HSDPA connectivity to help you stay connected virtually wherever you are, as long as you pay your monthly subscription bills and do not live in Timbuktu. Sharing many a resemblance with the B1 series, you will get a WWAN antenna, an SD memory card slot, and a slightly different finish this time round. Powered by Intel’s Atom processor, you will be able to choose from 1.1GHz (Z510) or 1.33GHz (Z520) options. There is no word on pricing, but expect the hard drive-based version to retail for a whole lot cheaper compared to the 64GB SSD model.

Sony reported profits of about $326M, compared to $620M during the same period last year. Sony Computer Entertainment was one of the few bright spots with PS3 and PSP sales off the charts, compared to last year. This feels a little like the old PS2 days where the gaming division was lifting the profits of the whole group (PlayStation used to be 50% of Sony’s profits back then). Sony also blamed the results on a lack of blockbusters like “Spider-Man 3”, which is in my opinion a “pseudo-random” event, financially speaking… I think that this really shows that Sony’s other divisions have had troubles for a while, and I don’t really see an end to it. Samsung and other brands have largely caught up, and besides Blu-Ray (which is licensed to others) Sony does not really have any serious technological edge.
Worse, the value is really moving into the software (OS, user interface…) and Sony can’t build that stuff to save its life (at least, for now). I think that this situation will stabilize and that things will even get better as PS3 software revenues grow (along with the installed base), but fundamentally, if the PS4 is a flop, that would be “game over” for Sony. If it can adapt, the company would not die, but without a successful PS4 (or equivalent cash-generator), Sony “as we know it” cannot continue to exist.

Ok, the phrase “official leak” doesn’t sound quite right, but that’s the case with the Nokia. While it isn’t available on an official basis yet, Nokia has already posted specifications of this smartphone on their own website. This mid-range N Series cell phone will come with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity, ensuring you remain hooked to the Internet no matter where you are. There is no word on GPS navigation, but that would be nice to see in the final product. It will also support a wide range of all the popular video formats, making this one multimedia-centric device.
