Yamaha Muro Sensor

Yamaha Muro Sensor

Yamaha’s new Muro Sensor is able to play music by sensing the direction and speed of acceleration - presumably somewhat like how Sony Ericsson’s shake cell phones work. It comes with a 15cm long chassis and boasts a triaxial acceleration sensor inside. It resembles the Wiimote and comes with a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless module. You can connect up to two dozen Muro Sensors simultaneously to a single base unit, and there is a transmission delay of less than 3ms. Swinging the Muro Sensor will generate preset sounds that are based on those values. Each Muro Sensor has its own ID and generates different sounds, so you can have a field day with your friends annoying your neighbors if you happen to own plenty of these.

More Star Wars Mimobots

More Star Wars Mimobots

We’ve seen a fair number of Star Wars mimobots in the past, and Mimoco has updated their line with even more Star Wars characters entering the mimobot world. This time round, we are treated to the sight of Royal Guard stormtroopers, Darth Sidious and Wicket with elongated foreheads. C-3PO will also make an appearance as a thumb-size data storage unit. Mimoco hopes to release these to the world by first debuting them at the Comic-Con International event in San Diego this week. Each of the Star Wars Mimobot Series 3 flash drives will come preloaded with wallpapers, icons, avatars and mimoByte sound software.

Worldwide E-Book Display Shipments to Rise

Worldwide E-Book Display Shipments to Rise

We all know that applied knowledge is power, and one of the best ways to obtain knowledge would be through reading. Since this is the 21st century and all, it would be prudent to assume that e-books will pick up in the near future, and iSuppli predicts that worldwide e-book display shipments will rise to 18.3 million units in 2012. This means folks who want to see their books published in the electronic format will have plenty more opportunities to do so, and if you want to churn out that one good book in you, now would be a good time to start in order to gain first mover advantage, never mind if the quality is not all that great. Did you know that you can subscribe to Ubergizmo on the Kindle?

PSP and Sidekick Merge

PSP and Sidekick Merge

Only in Samuel Lau’s world, that is. He has taken both devices and come up with a sliding screen form factor which unveils the QWERTY keyboard underneath. Since this is a concept, why not go all out with his imagination? It will also come with a 3.2 megapixel camera at the back, a front webcam, motion sensors, a touch screen display and geo-tracking for you to locate other PSP owners so that a little multiplayer action can happen while you’re stuck in the same bus.

FiOS Customers Get Speed Boost

FiOS Customers Get Speed Boost

Verizon FiOS customers will soon benefit from another speed boost, this time round via coaxial cables that are already in place, connected to the FiOS set-top boxes throughout their homes. This broadband service will see throughput speeds on coax cables increase from 75 MBps to 175 MBps, which is a vast jump by any standards. Of course, real world performance will rarely touch such high levels due to many other factors, but it is nice to see the potential that customers are getting even though it is not realized. Verizon also mentioned that the new routers (MI424-WR from Actiontec and the UltraLine Series 3 model 9100 by Westell) are able to support up to four simultaneous wireless networks. The new hardware will onily be delivered to new customers sometime later this year, so existing customers are out of luck.

Dell Touch Screen in Latitude XT Tablets

Dell Touch Screen in Latitude XT Tablets

Dell did put up a YouTube video on its new touch screen functionality found in the Latitude XT tablets thanks to a firmware upgrade, but they have pulled the plug on that video already. These new tablets come with a rotating display and doubles up as a flat writing surface, where the firmware upgrade allows users to scroll by placing a couple of fingers on the screen and moving them either horizontally or vertically. You’d best get a screen cleaner if you want to have a field day with the Latitude XT. In addition, Dell will also introduce a 128GB SSD for all Precision and Latitude systems, in addition to the XPS and Alienware range. Gotta fork out more for those models from now on.

Nehalem Intel Processor to launch in September

Nehalem Intel Processor to launch in SeptemberNehalem die photo from dvhardware

The next Intel processor, using an architecture codenamed “Nehalem”, brings a surprising boost of performance compared to current CPUs. We’re talking about anywhere between 20% and 40% in intensive applications, especially the ones that are multi-core friendly (video compression, software 3D rendering…). Thanks to Hyper-Threading, a technique that allows more threads to be decoded and executed simultaneously, Nehalem beats current CPUs by a large margin… I’m just glad that I didn’t upgrade my PC quite yet (selfish thought, huh?). I meant to ask: are you looking forward to get a new CPU or do you just see them as a commodity like memory or hard disks? Which part of a PC is most important to you?

Philips Color Changing LED Candle

Philips Color Changing LED Candle

Philips certainly has bigger fish to fry, although it is commendable that the company has taken some time out to come up with LED candles that feature color-changing capability. Known as the Imageo Wax Candle, the LEDs within are powered by a small battery (how else since you don’t see any solar panels attached to it…), lasting way longer than a regular wax candle and offering a gamut of colors. Oh yeah, you also lower the risk of burning down your own home while you’re at it.

Stay away from MobileMe

Stay away from MobileMe

I’m still using a blackberry, but I stay on the look out with my iPhone buddies: from what I hear, you might want to check these latest MobileMe (or MobileMess…) reviews from the NY Times and elsewhere. They both complain about the fact that the service definitely doesn’t “just work”. This adds-up to the disappointment over the fact that apple has marketed MobileMe as a “push” service, while many argue that it is more like a “sync” service.

Anyhow, stay on the fence until the situation gets better, that’s our advice. We’ll keep an eye on the situation.
