Things certainly look a whole lot different when you approach it from another perspective, and the same can be said for the Nikon Small World. Check out the image gallery for different takes on the smaller (and finer) things in life.

NEC has stumbled upon what it calls the Digital Signage Solution that is able to determine the gender, generation and other attributes of a person standing in front of a display thanks to face recognition technology. This data will then be used to make a computation, resulting in advertisements on the display that will cater to the results of the calculations. Guess this is yet another way for advertisers to zoom in on their target market and getting the most bang out of their ad dollars, but I think there are plenty of flaws if an algorithm will end up deciding what ads it thinks you like to see based on your physical appearance alone. Hopefully a scan of my face won’t result in any anatomy enlargement therapy.

Dr. Dre should stick to creating new records and beats instead of churning out peripherals like the Dr. Dre Beats earphones. This pair of cans will hit retail stores from the 25th of this month onwards, retailing for a massive $349.95. You must be silly rich or a huge Dr. Dre fan if you’re going to fork out such a huge wad of cash for a pair of headphones, and even if you are a serious audiophile, I think you would rather settle for an alternative brand that has better quality performance. Seriously, if street cred could be bought with money, this would certainly do the trick - otherwise, avoid it at all costs.

Teddy bears can be comfort toys and highly expensive collectibles as well, depending on which end of the spectrum you’re at. The Dilus electronic teddy bear concept is definitely groundbreaking as it will try to make your parenting life a wee bit easier by offering socialization, entertainment, communication and education lessons via interacting with your child. Holographic technology is employed to help kids interact with it, and also doubles up as an imaginary friend ala Calvin & Hobbes. Too bad this is but a concept, and it will be interesting to see how the power issues are solved for something so small and yet capable of doing so much.

It is old news that the sales of newspapers all over the world are dropping faster than scandals celebrities come up with. Young people prefer to rely on the Internet for their source of news and information, while various other websites cater to different niches, leaving the newspaper good only for those who love toilet reading material and have no idea on how to hop on the information superhighway. French newspaper companies are pretty forward looking in a sense that they are collaborating with one another to come up with the Read & Go, a service that enables subscribers download contents of participating papers onto “the most convincing electronic facsimile of ordinary paper in existence.”

Motorola’s Ischia has just been sent to the FCC office for their highly sought after stamp of approval. Is it just me, or do Motorola engineers love coming up with highly unpronounceable names for their products? First they dropped a vowel in the RAZR line, and now with the Motorola Ischia, my tongue’s all tied up in a knot. What I do know about the handset is the inclusion of Bluetooth and EDGE connectivity, and that’s that. GSM 850 support is missing though, so forget about making this a world clamshell phone.

It might be the “race to the bottom” that Sony had feared: the netbook market is getting hot (if that wasn’t obvious), and with major players like Dell & HP jumping in, Sony has little choice but join the fight. Digitimes reports that Foxconn Electronics (a contract manufacturer) is “set to manufacture the notebook for Sony”. While not everyone agrees with the scope of the work to be done by Foxconn (build the whole thing, or only provide the components), there’s little doubt that major Japanese manufacturers are going to enter this market. And I bet that they will overwhelmingly choose Intel’s Atom as their processor of choice.

Guess stuff like this is available only in Japan, and this time round we have a fashion model robot developed by the Robot Research Institute at the New Industry Research Organization, Japan. This robot is capable of imitating a pose (racy or otherwise) taken by a woman, courtesy of simultaneously controlling all 16 of its joints used for limbs, neck, waist and other body parts. It is hoped that this robot will be able to be fitted with polyethylene sheets in the future for a more human-like look, and as technology progresses, supermodels could soon be out of a job. Hopefully such a robot by then won’t suffer from embarrassing falls in front of the camera or a wardrobe malfunction.

With the iPhone’s phenomenal success and its 3G model creating waves, rumors of a MacBook Touch is bound to happen. After all, since the iPod line from Apple has also received the touch treatment, why not the MacBook? Word has it that such a device will be out this October, featuring the similar multi-touch format found on the iPhone and its 3G version. It will be powered by the full Mac OS X so that you won’t miss out on any functionality. Well, I can’t confirm this rumor at press time, but I surely will be able to wait till October to see if this post holds any water or not. What do you think?
