iPhone 3G starts at $199 in July

iPhone 3G starts at $199 on July

As you might have seen in our real-time WWDC post, Apple has finally announced the iPhone 3G. The real shocker is the price, which starts at $199 (8GB). This is only partially surprising: first, the hardware itself is cheaper than the one in the original iPhone. Apple also had the time to cost-reduce its hardware platform and negotiate better prices overall. Finally, the real money that Apple will make is in the wireless subscriptions, not the hardware itself. By selling its devices cheaper, the company will obviously end up making even more money by selling to more people and more carriers. The increased installed base and will allow apple to open a new money making venue: 3rd party apps distribution… This is brilliantly executed and I must say that they have managed the expectations very well.

Highlights: 3G network, GPS, cheap, more countries, more apps.

Acer P244W LCD Monitor

Acer P244W LCD Monitor

Acer’s recently announced P244W LCD monitor is touted to be the first 24″ full HD monitor in the world that features an aspect ratio of 16:9. I wonder whether there is anything to be proud of, since there are already plenty of other “firsts” when it comes to monitors and other consumer electronics these days that don’t seem to matter too much. Other features include :-

Flexible Tactile Display

Flexible Tactile Display

Finally, the flexible tactile display is no longer a dream but reality with researchers from Sungkyunkwan University in Korea and the University of Nevada in the US successfully having developed a prototype. This device can function as a Braille display for the visually impaired, and that’s just skimming the surface when it comes to practical applications. This new display is made possible thanks to soft actuator technology that is soft and flexible enough to be worn around virtually any part of the human body you can think of. Needless to say, much work needs to be done if this were to be developed for the masses. Future improvements in the line include an improvement in display performance as well as new applications for it.

Light Table and Desk

Light Table and Desk

This is no ordinary table, since a single flick of the switch will turn it into a full size light table. Guess this would be very welcome in traditional film and video circles as it offers more than enough ambient lighting to capture perfect moments. Just when you thought that this desk does nothing but offer a place to work while brightening up your life, it also features a motorized height adjustment, making it a firm favorite with midgets and giants alike.

WiFi-controlled Telepresence Tank

WiFi-controlled Telepresence Tank

Could war end up more and more like video games? Apparently so, with hacked stuff such as the WiFi-controlled Telepresence Tank. This basically allows you to roam around your home while killing time at the office. I’m not too sure whether this will translate into the military world, but who are we to say that this is impossible? It would be interesting to see whether future revisions are in store for a device such as this - slealthier movement and use of deadly force against pests such as mice and robbers. Oh yeah, not to mention capturing spyshots and videos of those trysts while you’re not around.

Watching, or should I say reading, the WWDC live blog on Gizmodo and Engadget and I can’t help but notice Steve Jobs has lost weight - a lot of weight. Like the kind of weight loss that stops me in my tracks and gets me wondering if he’s sick? I know back in 2004 he underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer, and then there was a rumor storm a couple year after whether is still had it. Seeing Steve this skinny definitely leaves you wondering. Hope he’s ok.

Solar Umbrella Globe Lights

Solar Umbrella Globe Lights

So you’re well off enough to actually have a nicely decorated patio, complete with umbrellas and all. Lighting up the place at night could pinch your pockets and then some with energy costs rising without any sign of abating - hence the need for the Solar Umbrella Globe Lights. These green baubles huddle together to form a chandelier which is secured to the patio umbrella’s pole, offering soft light for free if you ever need to do some evening entertaining. Since there is no need to drag wires across the lawn, you can also save on installation fees and medical bills (just in case you tend to be a klutz and trip over. Throughout the day, the solar panels on top of the umbrella will soak up enough of the sun’s rays to make these globe lights burn for up to half a dozen hours. It won’t come cheap though, as each Globe Light will retail for $89.95.

Solar-powered Golf Cart

Solar-powered Golf Cart

I’m not sure whether scrapping the entire sport known as golf altogether would be a better idea when it comes to keeping the world green, and not minor efforts such as a solar-powered Golf Cart that we see here. Apparently this electric golf cart is endowed with 72 photovoltaic cells built right into the roof, collecting solar energy to provide up to 33% more range between recharges compared to its non-solar electric companions.Features include rack and pinion steering, leaf springs, heavy shock suspension, and a built-in speed controller. I suppose you need to be of some stature in life if you happen to indulge in golf, but owning one of these Solar-powered Golf Carts would certainly mean you have arrived considering the hefty $9,000 price tag. Better make sure you drive a Prius and not a gas guzzler then.
