There is a new Japanese remote control that allows users to bat an eyelid in order to control the iPod, thanks to sensors connected to glasses/headphones known as the KomeKami Switch, or Temple Switch in English. These infrared sensors will generate an electric signal which will then talk to the iPod. If you wink strongly for one second with one eye, the iPod will go back one track, while doing the same with the other eye will skip the current track to the next. Closing both eyes will pause/play the iPod. According to the research team who developed this, the system works perfectly fine even if the user eats, talks, walks and runs as it is smart enough to discard accidental blinks. I wonder how lazy must one be to even control the playback of tunes on the iPod?

Samsung wants to claim glory for introducing the first 2.5″ hard drive in the world that boasts 500GB of storage space. This is made possible by using three stacked 167GB platters crammed into the standard 0.37″ vertical space that notebook hard drives use. Features include 5,400rpm spinning speed, an 8MB buffer and a 3Gbps SATA connection. This little wonder from Samsung will retail for $299.

Able Planet has announced its Clear Voice VoIP headset that introduces active noise canceling technology for superior audio clarity. It comes with the patent-pending Linx Audio system which “creates high frequency harmonics that enhance sound quality and speech clarity as well as filtering out undesirable frequencies or noise and soft clipping distortion”. Able Planet claims that “adding harmonics to the audio signal in this way is akin to the difference between playing a “C” note on a piano and the full “C” Chord, with the richer sound increasing the perception of loudness without the need to crank the volume up to ear-shattering levels and ensuring that speech and other high-frequency sounds are not smothered by bass tracks”. There is no word on pricing or availability as at press time.

It’s greatest strength? The portability factor. Unless you’re such a busy executive who needs to carry out conference calls everywhere you go, this $129 device is but a luxury item.

The Angel Phone that you see here is guaranteed to send chills down your spine, as behind this supposedly angelic being lies a phone where you can carry out all your landline conversations while looking “cute”. I don’t know, dolls just freak me out, especially those old school ones that open their eyes the moment you pick them up, and close those blinkers when they’re put down again. Not too sure if the ladies will find the Angel Phone appealing, but I’ll stick to my standard rectangular house phone. Well one thing’s for sure - in a domestic dispute, throwing the Angel Phone isn’t going to cause too much damage (and pain, if you’re the target) since it comes padded in a doll’s body.

Thermaltake goes on the offensive by introducing a new bunch of PC cases, with the XaserVI Mx leading the charge. You get mesh metal grills covering the innards, while fans are strategically located in order for your video card, processor and hard drive to have individual air flow paths for optimal cooling. Also, installation of everything except the motherboard and power supply are tool free - a relief for me considering how I hate to screw DVD-ROMs and hard drives in with other cases. Other interesting offerings are the Toughpower PSU 850W, the liquid cooled Bigwater 780e, and the Armor+ case which is able to accommodate a whopping 10 PCI slots, boasting smart cable management, independent thermal management, and a sliding motherboard tray.

This very cute Nuvi 900T is supposed to be available only in Italy at the moment, but we think that it will probably spread across Europe later this year. Here are the highlights:
DVB-H over the air digital TV4.3” DisplayPreloaded Maps of EuropeLifetime traffic service
DVB-H doesn’t exist in the U.S, so don’t expect it here anytime soon. Also, this is not a high-end model, so if you are looking for features such as speech recognition, you should look for a more expensive one, at least if you want a Garmin.

Konarka Technologies Inc has demonstrated its solar-cell manufacturing based on inkjet printing technology. They are not the only ones in the thin-film solar cells space, but I guess that having more players increases the odds of having something that we can buy soon.
Using thin film instead of silicon decreases the cost of solar panels - a critical reason why solar energy is not ubiquitous, yet.
