iPhone to Get Real Exchange Server Support

iPhone to Get Real Exchange Server Support

There has been some interesting news today, but the most important in my opinion, and for Apple’s business is that the iPhone will finally support true Exchange Server support, instead of the crap pop4 support.

This will allow corporate users, professionals and fancy personal users to sync with their email, contacts and calendar, among other Exchange features.

It will be interesting to see if this will have an impact on Blackberry and Windows Mobile.

Sony Developing Apple TV Rival

Sony Developing Apple TV Rival

Sony is not content with winning the high definition format war with its Blu-ray emerging as the victor, as they company wants to hedge against virtually delivered content taking over the world of physcial media. Word has it that Sony is working on an Apple TV competitior, and this new device will also provide access to the PlayStation Network. Till it is released, it would be best to keep all speculation to yourself and hope that something comes along to nudge Apple TV awake from its slumber.

Real-Time 3D using Cell-Based Rendering… in Excel

Real-Time 3D using Cell-Based Rendering… in Excel

It is not a new 3D rendering technique, but the idea is fun: render vector graphics using excel cells as “pixels”. It reminds me of the old good time of ASCII demos.

This was spotted by my friend Andrew L. on Gamasutra, so head out there if you want to download the excel file and spin the cube on your own PC.

iPhone SDK Roadmap and Microsoft Exchange support

Apple today unveiled the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and Microsoft Exchange support

Software developers finally get a look at the iPhone SDK roadmap to create applications for the phone. Over a year after the iPhone was introduced, and a couple of week late, Apple has given developers the tools they have been asking for. Starting today Apple will be open up the same APIs and tools that they use internally to build iPhone software. Now third-party developers can now begin to officially produce legitimate software, not iPhone software hacks. The SDK will rely on Apple’s Xcode development environment for Mac OS X, but optimized for the iPhone. So basically, if you can develop applications for the Mac then you should be able to do the same for the iPhone.

The full featured SDK gives developers full access to the iPhone’s core OS including graphics and networking. Apple created something called Interface Builder, that “Makes building your user interface as simple as drag-and-drop” plus debugging and analysis tools. What does this mean for the average iPhone user? It mean there will be a host of new software including everything from games and instant messaging to powerful business applications.

Apple also introduced Microsoft Exchange support built right into iPhone, removing the greatest barrier for adoption of the iPhone into the corporate world. Apple has licensed ActiveSync with Exchange server from Microsoft. Built into the next software update, the iPhone will have access to push email, push contacts with global address book, live calendar events and remote wipe plus additional security. Although IT managers will inevitably find something to complain about, the list will have been reduced significantly.

Naja King Flexible Stand

Naja King Flexible Stand

The Naja King flexible stand holds your shiny new iPhone or iPod touch in either a vertical or horizontal position, allowing you to view movies without tiring your hands. Features include a head with anti-scratch grippers that are capable of rotating a full 360º, along with a three-foot-long cable that can be packed flat for travel purposes. The Naja King flexible stand retails for $40 and would be a great gift idea for movie buffs whose primary mode of watching movies is on the iPod touch/iPhone.

Tactile Wand For Visually Impaired

Tactile Wand For Visually Impaired

The visually impaired could certainly make do with this ’smart’ wand that features a sensor on the front that is capable of detecting nearby objects, offering feedback on just how far away the object is with varying levels of vibration. What I’m more concerned with is not having the sensor detect whether there is anything in front, but rather nothing. Wouldn’t want a blind person to walk straight into a huge drain or manhole now, would we? A tactile strip will send feedback to your thumb, allowing you to use this in addition to audio cues as you find your way around. The Tactile Wand is but a concept at this point in time, but it would be swell to see it hit the market sooner rather than later.

Samsung Drops Hybrid Player

Samsung Drops Hybrid Player

Looks like Samsung has withdrawn itself from giving whatever remnant of life HD DVD has by canceling the launch of its BD-UP5500 hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player. This move comes after Toshiba has decided to kill off the HD DVD standard, so folks who love all things Samsung and still want to enjoy Blu-ray movies (in addition to the few HD DVD movies out there) can settle for the existing UP5000 player.
