PC Gaming Has a Bad Reputation – How to Fix It

PC Gaming Has a Bad Reputation – How to Fix It

[GDC 2008] We were invited to attend an interesting discussion held by the PC Gaming Alliance, a group of companies that includes Acer/Gateway, Activision, AMD, Dell, Electronic Arts, Epic, Intel, Microsoft and NVIDIA. The Alliance has been created to solve one problem: Make PC Gaming easier to “consume” and extend the reach of PC Gaming beyond veteran/hardcore gamers.

What is the problem?Unlike game consoles, the PC is an open platform with a multitude of hardware and software choices. This is a strength when it comes to high-end gaming systems because you always get the latest technology, but it is also a weakness because it confuses consumers who buy multi-purpose computers. There are examples of 2000 dollars PCs that are not capable of decent gaming and from a consumer’s perspective, it’s ridiculous – most would expect a $2000 PC to be somewhat gaming-capable. On the software side, games all have different minimum requirement specs (and sometimes completely bogus ones).

Bellperre Croc Leather Phone

Bellperre Croc Leather Phone

Ever heard of Bellperre? Neither have I, but this company apparently wants to make a name for itself in the world of cell phones by releasing a new range that does not have a single plastic part - everything else is constructed from premium leather, steel, gold, hardwood and other exquisite materials. The leather palette is huge - you have over 200 colors to choose from, while the type of leather is equally stunning as you mull over crocodile, shark, buffalo and calf. Potential customers will be able to select from a variety of metal casings including aircraft aluminum and precious 18k rose gold. No pricing details are available, but if you have to ask, you won’t be able to afford it. The range of Bellperre phones will arrive in Europe come June 2008.

Zen PC Concept

Zen PC Concept

The entire Zen concept is all about being calm and one with the surroundings, and simply by just looking at the Zen PC, I can sense my blood pressure lowering already. Labeled as a sandbox PC, this unique tablet-like computer enables users to use it without even looking at it, since it operates via an active surface that changes texture depending on the area or function you’ve chosen. Guess blind or visually impaired folk will be able to pick the Zen PC up much faster than the seeing since we’re so used to visual input, but it is a novel idea to explore. I don’t think the steep learning curve will earn it any points though, but then again chances are the Zen PC concept won’t be realized anytime soon which is a bummer as the blind will find it extremely useful though.

Toilet Bowl Lighter

Toilet Bowl Lighter

The next time somebody asks you for a light, why not light up more than a cigarette? You can also light up the person’s face with a grin, thanks to this oddly-shaped toilet bowl lighter. The shape isn’t too pocket-friendly though, but it isn’t too much of a sacrifice considering how you will be able to be the toast of town with this hilarious lighter. Unfortunately, it probably won’t score points with chicks who dig mature, single men who look down on toilet humor.

Digital Tattoo Concept

Digital Tattoo Concept

Tattoos are cool, but getting yourself inked often requires serious consideration since the removal process is excruciatingly painful. The Digital Tattoo concept by Jim Kielke features a tiny, implantable display that will hook up to an artery and a vein for its power, and can display information such as caller ID and carry out video chats on one’s arm. Interestingly enough, it is also capable of monitoring your health while alert you of any impending screw-ups in your health. This is all too Big Brother for my taste - hopefully the day doesn’t come where the Digital Tattoo is made compulsory.

Biometric Technology At The Gym

Biometric Technology At The Gym

Hitachi’s finger vein authentication technology is now being ported over to the gym, courtesy of IT company Fukui Computer who has developed a new range of networked exercise machines known as “medimo”. Each of these come with Hitachi’s finger vein reader, where users will be able to identify themselves with a simple press of the finger. The machine will subsequently analyze such data and then adjust the weight resistance and seat position automatically after referring to the user’s previous set of preferences. Each “medimo” machine will retail for approximately $17,000 each - I wonder how many user profiles this machine is able to store before it runs out of memory.

Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display

Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display

I guess if you’re a flat panel display freak, the Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display would definitely cause your jaw to drop onto the floor. All the screens are curved at an angle toward you for additional comfort, whereas everything else snaps into place securely so that it doesn’t fall down like a pack of dominos. The rack that comes with it is adjustable as well, enabling you to accommodate a wide range of monitor sizes. Amazing stuff, really, although be prepared to see your electricity bill go straight up the roof if you use this set up for hours on end every day. Then again, if you can afford to purchase the Paramount Parabolic Multi-Monitor Display, I don’t think the monthly power bill is going to be of much concern.

Wall-E GameCube Mod

Wall-E GameCube Mod

Isn’t this the cutest GameCube mod you’ve ever laid your eyes on? Based on a character from Disney Pixar’s upcoming film, the Wall-E GameCube mod is made out of children’s toys Plexiglas, tubes, rods, plastic, metal and acrylic paint. I wonder how many hours it took to create this masterpiece. How many other mods do you think the GameCube is suitable for?

Bandai Digital Soothsayer

Bandai Digital Soothsayer

Humans seem to have this preoccupation when it comes to divining the future, and Bandai is certainly playing to its strengths by releasing a virtual soothsayer that comes in a pocket-sized device. This gizmo features a digital personality assessment as well as other unsupported, unscientific methods to come up with a random statement about your future. Known as the Mirai Scope, it will ask you approximately 50 personal questions, where the answers will then determine which of the 236 unique personality types you fall under. The Mirai Scope will remain a Japan-only exclusive, and it will be released there later next month for approximately $28 each. If only Toshiba execs had the advantage of using this to predict the demise of HD DVD…

MEDIVista Info System

MEDIVista Info System

Being sick is no fun, especially for the bedridden who have to endure (annoying) visiting friends and relatives of their own or their room-mates. The TV shows are constantly on repeat, and your DS Lite has just run out of battery. What are you supposed to do then? The MEDIVista Info System from Lincor Solutions could help, featuring a touch screen LCD display that can be used by doctors, nurses and the patients themselves, depending on which program or application is being accessed currently. Guess this means once your doctor is done viewing your x-ray on the MEDIVista Info System, you can then get back to chatting with your buddies via IM and checking your email. I wonder how much will it take to get a review unit - must somebody club me in my kneecaps?
