[GDC 2008] Last year, we published about Emotiv, a brain/computer interface headset prototype launched at GDC 2007. Today, Emotiv unveiled the EPOC neuro-headset that allows gamers to control a video game using their thoughts, expressions and emotions. This consumer product is lighter, better designed and has more features than the prototype:
The Expressiv Suite (identifies facial expressions in real-time, so characters respond to the expressions of the player), has 30 new expressions in addition to the existing smile, blink and wink.
The Affectiv suite is now able to detect and respond to tension, frustration and meditation. Games will be able to respond dynamically to player emotions, enabling, for example, difficulty adjustment on the fly.
In addition to the movement-based actions (push, pull, lift, drop and rotate), the Cognitiv suite has a new category of detection based on visualization: the player is now able to command objects disappearance.

Asus aims to bring HDTV to your desktop with its Asus HDTV Suite-HDMI. Perfect for those who do not spend too much time at home in front of a slim idiot box, this standalone TV box offers 1,920 x 1,200 resolution that allows one to use their monitors as a full HDTV set or as a multimedia center without having to turn on the PC. Sounds great if you’re living in a cramped apartment where space is at a premium, although you won’t be able to work while letting visitors to your home watch TV simultaneously.

The latest post-DVD-war rumor is that Microsoft is set to “dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu ray Xbox 360 by as early as May 2008”, according to smarthouse. The authors say that they have learned this from insiders at Microsoft. The article ends with “Both Intel and Microsoft have been supporters of the HD DVD format that is set to be killed off this week.”
First of all, Intel was supporting both formats. Secondly, Microsoft is a software company so they couldn’t really care less about which format wins. Finally, they were smart enough not to use HD-DVD in the Xbox 360 – a console that will live on for many, many years to come. So, all in all, HD-DVD is a non-issue for Microsoft.
Now, this would be news-worthy if the Blu-Ray drive was internal to the Xbox 360. However, in that case, don’t count on having many games come out in Blu-Ray format because the DVD installed based of the 360 is simply too large to ignore.

You’ve got to love it when carriers compete (a little) on pricing. This month has been rich in “unlimited announcements”. Sprint drew the first blood by announcing their unlimited plans, followed by Verizon with their more obscure ones and finally AT&T just announced their unlimited plans today.
It’s not really “cheap”, but I’ve seen insane phone bills (from others, of course) when I worked for a large company, so I know that some customers will love this.
Quick survey: do you use more than $99/month for voice minutes on your cellphone? (Leave a comment)

It’s not clear where the Joy is when using this mouse, but Korean Company WOW Technology is planning to unleash the beast in North America and Sweden within a month.
The idea behind the ergonomics is that this shape is deemed by WOW to use a more natural hand stance. While that might be true for a LEGO character, I’m not convinced that this is valid for humans. Again, I should reserve my final judgment until I can try it – I’m just thinking out loud here.

Blu-ray wins the format war by a forfeit
As if it wasn’t already a foregone conclusion, Toshiba has finally thrown in the the towel and stop production of its HD DVD players by March of this year. The news is not all that shocking given the decision in January by Warner Brothers to drop support for HD DVD and move over to Sony’s Blu-ray. Recently big players like Best Buy, Wal-mart and Netflix moved over to the Blu-ray camp, leaving HD DVD with very little supporters.
What does this mean for HD DVD adopters? There were plenty of home theater buffs that wanted the latest and greatest in HD and bought HD DVD players and movies that are now orphaned. The good news is these movies can live on in combo HD/Blu-ray players, making Toshiba’s decision a little easier for all. But what does this mean for the cost of Blu-ray players and movies? In part, the allure of HD DVD was the price. Toshiba was really first to market and first to slash player costs, in turn driving it’s adoption. And in most scenarios that usually produces a winner, but the consumers weren’t snapping up HD DVDs or the hardware. Most people were waiting to sidle up to a winner to this format war and the movie studios were all to aware of this. Sony can’t be in any hurry to start cutting Blu-ray equipment now that their major competitor has call it quits. I suspect we won’t see any price drop until maybe a Christmas push later this year.
