Knee Brace Charges Gizmos

Knee Brace Charges Gizmos

Who would’ve thought that kinetic energy could’ve been harnessed in this manner? Researchers at the University of Michigan chanced upon this great idea by developing a device that generates electricity simply from walking, and it was designed to be efficient enough to be used by virtually everyone. This knee brace captures energy which is normally spent when you come to a stop while walking, turning such energy into electricity that could be used to keep your gadgets juiced up. Naturally, if you’re one of those types who do nothing but sit at your office desk all day long while playing with various Web-based games, I don’t think such a device would do you any good. I suppose folks who pound the pavement regularly as well as the military will find this to be of greater benefit than the layman.

Phones For The Elderly

Phones For The Elderly

Emporia Telecom from Austria will be rolling out handsets for senior citizens in particular, and unless you’re one who could make do without any music, video and camera functions while taking in ridicule from your colleagues for the handset’s large buttons, extremely loud volume and emergency call functions, I’d suggest holding on to whatever phone you’re using at the moment. This phone will probably be on parade at MWC, so head on to Emporia Telecom’s booth if you happen to be in Barcelona.

Dell Could Snap Up Motorola

Dell Could Snap Up Motorola

We all know that Motorola isn’t in great shape, but then again neither is Dell after losing its position to HP as the top selling computer brand in the world. Nevertheless, Dell is doing much better than Motorola and word on the street has it that the former could be showing some interest in picking up Motorola’s bleeding cell phone division. There are a couple of names thrown into the fray as well, including Chinese handset makers ZTE and Huawei, but it remains to be seen whether any of the mentioned will be able to make a decent offer down the road. Many people are speculating that Dell will probably partner with Google after picking up Motorola’s cell phone division to create a possible GPhone which runs on the Android technology platform.

Sony Ericsson HSPA ExpressCards

Sony Ericsson HSPA ExpressCards

Sony Ericsson has rolled out its maiden HSPA 7.2/2.0 devices in the form of the EC400 and EC400g, whereby both come in the ExpressCard/34 form factor. They theoretically offer 7.2Mbps and 2.0Mbps download and upload speeds, respectively, although real-world usage would be much lower than speculated. Interestingly enough, the EC400g will come with an integrated GPS receiver that is smart enough to display the user’s current location on Google Maps. Both of these cards are HSPA/UMTS, tri-band 850/1900/2100 MHz, EDGE/GPRS, quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz ExpressCards which will see action on a global scale by the middle of this year.

Sony Ericsson Lands in Force in Barcelona

Sony Ericsson Lands in Force in Barcelona

Sony Ericsson has a strong line-up for this Mobile World Congress 2008. With excellent designs such as the Walkman 980i, the Z770 Clamshell (gallery) and the uber-smart XPERIA X1, there is no doubt that the competition had chills up their spine when they saw what was coming.

Don’t miss the Cyber-Shots C902 and C702 camera-phones made for the outdoors and the G900 and G700 organizers.

The phone that excites us the most is the XPERIA X1 (gallery). Its stunning screen (similar to the Sony Mylo 2) and it striking design will rock the world of Windows Mobile. The X1 has it all: touch display, QWERTY, 3.5G, WiFi, A-GPS… expect many to call it an “iPhone Killer”.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Windows Mobile and QWERTY!

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is one of the most exciting Windows Mobile phones since the Blackjack 2 and the (phantom) i-mate 9502. With a 800×480 pixel display, it is probably going to be the new reference in terms of productivity and entertainment. Users can control it the way they want: Touch screen, joystick or via the elegant Arc slider QWERTY keyboard. Finally, it has WiFi, 3.5G and assisted-GPS – features that will make a big difference, given that web browsing and location based are popular apps these days.

Sony Ericsson G900: the Touchscreen Phone with a 5 Megapixel Camera

Sony Ericsson G900: the Touchscreen Phone with a 5 Megapixel Camera

The G900 has similar features as the G700 but features a 5 Megapixel camera, has WIFI 802.11 b/g and has a business card scanner.

The G-series is designed for users who love browsing their phones with their finger or stylus, and like to write instead of typing. This seems like an attempt from Sony Ericsson to create an iPhone-like user experience… we will need to get our hands on it to see how it compares. It will be available in selected markets in Q2 2008

Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-Shot

Sony Ericsson C902

The Sony Ericsson C902 is the imaging phone of the CyberShot family because it has capabilities like stabilization that is missing from its C702 sibbling. Other than that they almost share the same specifications. The C902 lacks FM radio and video streaming but it has a 5 Megapixel camera (instead of 3.2 for the C702) and a better battery life: Sony Ericsson estimates that the talk time for the C902 is 9hrs, instead of 7hrs for the C702.

Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-Shot

Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-Shot

The Sony Ericsson C702 is a phone for the outdoors. It is splash and dust resistant can has been designed to snap photos quickly in any position (like when I fall from my dirt bike – yikes). The camera is capable of detecting your friend’s faces before taking a 3.2 Megapixel photo. Because you might use it on a trip, there’s a GPS that will not only tell you where you are, but it will also geo-tag your photos.
