Some feel that Doom is way too violent and that it should not be associated in any way to the OLPC, a low-cost computer that is supposed to improve child education in developing countries. Others think that “Doom can teach geometry and other skills to kids”.
“Teach Geometry”, what?? It is true that doom can teach how to find your way in a 3D maze, and that blasting a moving demon across a level requires serious interpolation skills, but that’s probably the worst argument that I have heard on the subject. Let’s face it: Doom is a (violent) game, not an educational tool. More OLPC drama here. More OLPC Stories

Here’s a piece of news that went past our radar at the recently concluded CES - Eee PCs with larger sizes. These new models will be available in 8″ and 8.9″ flavors, and it surely looks like an optical illusion since the bezel seemed to be much larger without giving you actual screen real estate. Asus was said to be pretty stingy with important information that matters - you know, processor type, battery life, color options, hard drive sizes, release dates and prices. Needless to say, more news to follow as developments roll by.

This will keep you from shutting off the alarm clock and falling asleep again… The only way to shut it off is to aim at the center of the target with a laser beam, if a person has enough concentration to do that it is unlikely that he/she fall asleep again. This is a perfect gift for me.Available from UrbanTrend.

Now that the iPhone 1.1.3 software update is out, and you can add Safari Web Clips to your home screen on the iPhone and Touch, don’t just settle for the generic icon that Safari will stick in there. Here are drop dead simple instructions on how to add your own web site icon or logo to your visitors iPhone or Touch.
1.) Fire up Photoshop and create a shiny new graphic at 114 x 114 px (Technically the size is 57 x 57 px, but this size worked best for our icon)
2.) Save the file as a 8 bit PNG with the name apple-touch-icon.png
3.) Upload the file to the root directory of your web server. That’s it! Safari will re-size larger images and automatically add the glass look so it fits right in with your other icons.

Time Warner Cable will conduct a billing test in Beaumont (Texas) to see if it can reduce “network congestions” by making heavy users pay more than light users. Time Warner describes the situation like this: heavy users are 5% of the customers, but use 50% of the bandwidth.
I think that Time Warner Cable is trying to improve its 6.84% profit margin rather than solving a “network congestion” problem that few customers, if any, complain about. What is not clear to me is what would happen to the “light users”. Will they be billed on usage as well – or would they stay on a flat-fee plan? As a consumer, I think that if Time Warner wants to use a pay-per-usage (or pay per Gigabytes) billing, every account should be subject to it, so that people who use little bandwidth can save.
From a business perspective, doing a pay-per-usage billing for all doesn’t look like a good idea: “light users” might flock to Time Warner, while “heavy users” will jump elsewhere. In the end, the market will decide. What so you think?

Wow that was quick… following the Keynote where Steve Jobs used a Manila folder to store the MacBook air, a website called manilamac.com is already commercializing a Manila folder-looking sleeve for the MacBook Air. It costs $29.95 and should ship when the laptop is available, according to the web site. Take a look at the FAQ and learn more about its creators.

Back in December, we wroteabout the Asus M930, which looks like a Nokia communicator – on the surface. Today’s news is that the M930 is likely to be announced at Cebit (March 4-9). I’m curious to hold it in my hand to see how it feels. Photo Gallery
