New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone

New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone

Google has update the user interface for Gmail by adding Ajax code to avoid page refreshes. Also, the auto-complete has been added. From the Google Gmail blog:

“We also implemented two of the coolest and most requested features for this release: pre-fetching and auto-complete. Now when you use Google on your iPhone, Gmail will automatically pre-load all your most recent messages for you. So when you decide to read a message it will be on your screen in a snap… “

“With auto-complete you can often get the right email address on your screen within 2-3 key strokes.”

So, how do you like it?

Belt Buckle camcorder to spy on…

Ajoka Buckle DVR

If you plan any secret video surveillance or covert operation, this device is perfect for the job, according to Ajoka, the manufacturer. The Buckle DVR looks like any other belt, except that it is equipped with a built in Micro camcorder, recording in 3GP video format captured at 15 fps, 176×144 resolution, with 3 hours of battery life and capturing up to 33 hours of video on a 1GB Micro SD card. It connects and charges via a USB cable, and accepts up to 2 GB MiniSD card.Given the specific location of the camcorder on the body, I am wondering what kind of “secret” videos could show up on YouTube coming from this gadget…Check out the product page

Under the Skin Microchip Tagging for Convicts in the UK

Microchip implant

The UK government is discussing the introduction of computer chips implanted under the skin of offenders in order to reduce prison overcrowding, They plan to monitor convicts’ whereabouts using these chips and satellite technology. Liberty, a civil right group, has criticized the project, arguing that it would degrade prisoners and hinder their rehabilitation. In my opinion, jail time is more degrading than being at home and monitored using this kind of technology.

Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off

Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off

MacDailyNews has reported that the talks between Apple and China Mobile have not been going well. It would seem obvious that revenue sharing is at the heart of the problem and we can only imagine that China Mobile does not want to pay what AT&T is currently paying. Unfortunately for Apple, China Mobile is in an awesome negotiating position: they have 350M customers (or about 70% market share in China), which is probably 8x what any U.S carrier has.

Will Apple back down on its demands? Not for now. In the meantime, Chinese customers can enjoy countless iPhone clones.

Concealed Weapon Detector to be Deployed in the U.S?

Concealed Weapon Detector to be Deployed in the U.S?

I’ve seen the concept on TV a couple of years ago, but apparently, the U.S government is purchasing twelve concealed weapons detectors from QinetiQ. This particular one seems to be based on microwaves that detect things that are denser than human flesh and clothes, but I have not seen the detailed specs (more information on QinetiQ’s site).

There is also competing system that works by recognizing the magnetic signature of weapons logged in a database.

Steve Jobs MacWorld 2008 Keynote Leaked? Probably Not

Steve Jobs MacWorld 2008 Keynote Leaked? Probably Not

On the eve of MacWorld 2008, a rumor about a potential leak of Steve Job’s keynote speech on wikipedia is spreading on the web like wildfire. I personally think that this is a fake that looks like a mix of “wish list” and “predictions”.

I have not read previous notes from Steve Jobs, but I do not imagine that they would look like that. Anyhow, this is just my opinion, so take a look at the leak (on pocket-lint), and tell us what you think of it.

There’s Something in the Air - MacWorld Predictions

Macworld 2008 banner sightings leave everyone wondering exactly what is in the air?

Macworld begins tomorrow in San Francisco and the rumors are flying. Recent snapshots of the this year’s MacWorld banners have revealed a new tagline, perhaps. There’s something in the air.

Most of the rumors revolve around a new ultra-thin Macbook which we reported on last week. What appear to be a fake photo of an smaller MacBook has already hit the net. While specific details of the machine have not been leaked, that hasn’t stopped anyone from throwing out some wild guesses.

The 12″ model disappeared from Apple’s MacBook Pro product line when they made the last big release. It’s makes sense that they’ll bring back a smaller model than the current 15.4″. And certainly shrinking the form factor a bit seems to be a logical next step regardless. The use of a flash memory drive would seem to be a step in that direction. But what’s up with “There something in the air” slogan? Here’s a few guesses.

In order to further reduce the already thin form factor of the Mac notebook line means you’ve got to deal with various cables and plugs, - ethernet being one of the largest. Those things aren’t going to change size. So removing them from the Book itself might be the only path to shrinking it’s thickness. You would also have to remove the optical drive. Which leads us to the idea of a dock station for the new MacBook ‘Mini’. But nothing like a traditional docking station. The Macintosh News Network has already reported on patent’s filed by Apple that outline some form of multiple purpose docking stating. And we’re taking a leap and thinking that it might end up using inductive coupling to communicate with the book itself. No wires. No connections. Just Air between them. Something in the air indeed.

Nokia N95 From Rogers Wireless?

Nokia N95 From Rogers Wireless?

We know that the Nokia N95 is set to arrive in the USA, as soon as negotiations with AT&T or T-Mobile are over, but it looks like Rogers wireless will resell it for the Canadian market. The hint came from a drop-down menu in the game download area, which shows the N95 in the list of supported phones.

Creative inPerson Hands-On

Creative inPerson Hands-On

Our friends from Krunker have published an interesting hands-on with the Creative inPerson, a video phone that was recently cleared by the FCC. Creative markets it as a video conferencing system. In case you haven’t read our previous article, the inPerson connects using wired or wireless internet. Users need a monthly subscription that is said to be “low cost” (to be defined) in addition of the device itself, sold for $520.

Althought the quality of the audio/video is said to be very good, we think that this is way too expensive for consumers. For businesses it is different because they buy teleconferencing hardware/software from Polycom or Cisco that are much more expensive than this.

Netflix Expands Unlimited Streaming Access

Netflix Expands Unlimited Streaming Access

After a short test period of providing unlimited movie streaming, Netflix has decided to expand the access to more of its subscribers: “Beginning today, all Netflix subscribers on unlimited rental plans, which start as low as $8.99 a month, will be able to stream as many movies and TV episodes as they want on their PCs, choosing from a library of over 6,000 familiar movies and TV episodes”.

It doesn’t cost more, so it’s hard to complain, but I wish to see more interesting movies/shows available.
