Versuz Scoreboard plays it loud

Versuz Scoreboard plays it loud[CES 2008] Seventy Inc. wants to get kids out more often instead of letting them lounge around in the living room all day long playing video games. Hence, the Versuz Scoreboard that marries the functions of a portable electronic scoreboard and audio player in a single device. It comes with a compartment on top that can be opened to store an iPod or basically any other device that works with a line-in jack, allowing you to play back your favorite tunes to pump up the environment while you’re having a game of basketball. The scores can be adjusted by pressing buttons on the Versuz Scoreboard or simply by using the included remote control. I like the fact that the panels on the Versuz Scoreboard can be changed to that of your favorite team, but Seventy Inc. is currently in talks with various sporting teams with regard to licensing their team logos for use on the $199 Versuz Scoreboard, so that might take some time to happen. Hopefully this will make more kids sweat it out with the rest of the people in the ‘hood.RF Remote ControllerIndoor/Outdoor LED settingsAC or battery (six D batteries) poweredApprox. 4 to 6 hours battery life on full blast2 x 10W speakersCountdown clock - Period/Inning/Quarter/PoundVersus Scoreboard MicrophoneCool crowd and taunt sound effects

Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system

Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system[CES 2008] Making a backup of your work or data is more than important despite many people (including me) throwing caution to the wind by thinking a hard drive failure will “never happen to me”. Why not reduce the risk with the Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system? This device is hooked up to your computer and can duplicate up to a hundred discs in a single process. You can even have a nmixture of data discs without having to change them during the backup process. I must say it looks more like some sort of espresso maker, although this machine spits out discs instead of a steaming hot cup of joe. While there are no distributors in the US just yet, the company hopes to make a deal within the next couple of months and plan to sell the DEX1000 within a price region of $600 to $700. Some of the functions include :- Data backup/copierISO creation and restoreDisc eraserMusic ripper (from audio CDs to MP3, WAV and WMV formats)Music CD Creator softwareCompatible with Nero software

Portable stereo sound on Orbitsound T3

Portable stereo sound on Orbitsound T3[CES 2008] The old school way of getting portable stereo sound was through the use of headphones, but Orbitsound from UK has come up with something different - the T3 device. It is slightly larger than the average BlackBerry and is best experienced when worn around the neck. I tried it on and it really sounded as though I was wearing a pair of headphones, although you could say the sound isolation was extremely poor no thanks to the amount of noise and human traffic that’s going on in the busy Sands convention center. It works great with any iPod, MP3 players, CD players or notebooks as long as they support line-in jacks. Should you want to indulge in a little private listening, there is always a 3.5mm headphone port on the T3 to suit your needs. Such portable stereo sound is made possible thanks to Orbitsound’s airSOUND single-point-stereo technology. I like the fact that the T3 charges through a USB port, making it all the more easy to keep it juiced up. It takes approximately 2 hours of charging time for a full tank, and the T3 can go on for approximately a dozen hours before it is exhausted. What you see here is a prototype unit, so the silver-colored sides will not be spray painted in the final release – instead it will feature a silvery chrome surface that absolutely adores fingerprints. It will be released this summer, retailing for $149 a pop.

Aura SoHo conference speakerphone

Aura SoHo conference speakerphone[CES 2008] Conference phones are dime a dozen these days, but one of them pops up occassionally that makes you stop and take a second look. The Aura Soho is one of them, being a full duplex speakerphone that features the patented SoundClear Digital Signal Processing chip that claims to offer “unprecedented clarity” in your conversations. Regardless of whether you are running on an analog or digital phone system, the Aura SoHo caters to both. With CES 2008 being its launchpad, you can pick up the Aura SoHo for $229. I like the silver chrome surface that doesn’t leave obvious marks of pesky fingerprints on it. Check out the extra features below :- Full duplexDigital Signal Processing (DSP)-based noise cancellationActive noise cancellation3 internal omni-directional microphones2 RJ-22 jacks for external microphones1 RCA jack for connection to optional external call recorderFlash and redial buttonsVolume up and down toggle switch

QuadTri Pad prototype on display

QuadTri Pad prototype on display[CES 2008] Check out the QuadTri Pad - a one-hand keyboard that could possibly improve data input capability where mobile devices are concerned. It requires all five fingers on your hand to perform some touch-typing, but I must say it will probably take a fair bit of time to get used to the letters as well as their positions. Basically, all your digits are supposed to cover the entire QWERTY keyboard which has already been ‘miniaturized’. I did give the QuadTri Pad a go, but had some difficulty with the spacebar which was located on the left hand side of the keyboard as I am a left hander. Guess us southpaws are maligned again, eh? The unit on display is just a prototype at the moment and is attached via USB, but depending on the market demand and preference, the released version could come with Bluetooth connectivity. A commercial version ought to roll out within the next six months, retailing for under $100.

United Pepper supports Fair Trade

United Pepper supports Fair Trade[CES 2008] We’ve all heard of sweatshops in the east that produce goods at a dirt cheap cost only to be sold to gullible folk at an extremely outrageous price. United Pepper from Europe aims to change that mindset, and the company has released a sustainable design webcam known as Lili. Designed in Belgium and manufactured in Vietnam, all harmful materials during manufacturing has been removed save for the essential parts only. It uses recycled packaging for a reduced CO2 impact with body components comprising sand, cotton and kapok. Lili captures the environment in 1.3 megapixel glory, while the built-in microphone works just fine for video calls. There is also the United Pepper Oscar USB Hub that comes with a quartet of USB 2.0 ports. In the pipeline is a 54-in-1 memory card reader which you can check out in the photo gallery. The Lili Webcam and Oscar USB Hub will retail for $39.90 and $24.90 respectively. If you want to do your bit for the environment, going green with United Pepper is one way of going about it.

iShoes to the fore!

iShoes to the fore![CES 2008] Adding an ‘i’ prefix in front of your product name is old hat these days, but that hasn’t stopped Ilya Kaganovich and Boris Kaganovich from Plymouth, Minnesota to come up with the iShoes. This pair of motorized shoes helps to get you from one place to another (within a short distance, of course) in a fast and efficient manner. It has a rather limited range of just three miles, so this would be good to get you from your office to a subway station where you can easily slip it off and pack it into your bag. A pair weighs 5.3kg and has a top speed of 13.5mph. It takes roughly 2 hours for a full charge, but I think the $599.99 price tag is a wee bit high for a little extra convenience. Best to literally go the extra mile on bus no. 11 (your own two legs) as you will not only burn more calories but save some serious dough in the process.

Dexpreso DEX2000 backup system

Dexpreso DEX2000 backup system[CES 2008] While the Dexpreso DEX2000 might sound more powerful that the DEX1000, there are pros and cons to both sides. The DEX1000 can handle making backups of your data in different discs and formats without having you being there, but it needs to be connected to a PC to do that. The DEX2000 works as a standalone fully-automatic CD/DVD duplication system. It can only make copies of CDs and DVDs (are you thinking of running a bootleg operation from your basement now, matey? Arrrr!) but boasts the advantage releasing the completed disc into the collecting tub in just three seconds - making it a claimed five times faster than other automatic burning machines currently available. There is a removable hard drive housing located below the DEX2000, allowing you to change the content of stuff that you want to back up. It will probably retail between $700 and $800 when it hits the streets within a couple months’ time.

Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls

Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls[CES 2008] This porcine speaker works with your iPod and iPhone, and I must say it impressed me with the sound quality. While the design isn’t exactly cute per se, the fact that Amethyst included a glowing mouth adds to the appeal of this speaker dock. Its ears feature an airflow optimized design that helps avoid distortion and resonance, although you can’t really tell that on a noisy showroom floor. While it is already available in Europe (for $99 I might add), Amethyst is currently looking for distributors in North America. What’s most interesting about this iPod speaker dock are its ears - rubbing the right ear lowers the volume while doing so for the left ear will increase it. Pretty neat use of touch sensitive technology! I suppose since this is Vegas, there would probably be ‘adult’ versions of iPod speakers using similar technology although that would be another can of worms altogether ;)
