National Geographic Star Gazer

National Geographic Star Gazer[CES 2008] National Geographic keeps up with the times with the Star Gazer that was introduced at CES 2008. I know that star gazing is an activity that not many people indulge in, since it sounds rather boring and is too slow for the video-game generation. Hopefully something like the Star Gazer device will be able to pique the interest of folks in star gazing, and it is certainly worth packing for any camping trip thanks to the lightweight, durable and compact form factor. National Geographic claims that you will see five times more stars even in suburban skies with this thing, although I’d be more cautious with the actual performance. It currently retails for $199.95. Features of the National Geographic Star Gazer include :- Image Intensifier Tube Technology500x Ambient Light AmplificationMagnification: 3.0xField of view: 68 feet at a distance of 200 feet, 12-degree angleIR Field of IlluminationCR-123 or 3-volt lithium battery12.3 oz6.06 x 2.35 x 3.80

Kodak Easyshare V1073 & V1273

Kodak Easyshare V1073 & V1273[CES 2008] Kodak paraded a couple of its pre-production units of the latest Easyshare cameras - the V1073 and V1273. The images you see here and in the photo gallery are that of the former, which comes with 10 megapixels while the V1273 has 12 megapixels. I like the black rubbery finish that doesn’t leave any pesky fingerprints behind, and hopefully the final commercial version won’t see a change in color and material. The picture tagging function comes in handy, where you can insert tags such as “Favorite”, “Birthday”, “Holiday”, “Wedding” and others. I’m not sure whether the software has any limit on the number of tags though. More features and details on the Easyshare are available after the jump.

Pretty funny video from Microsoft’s CES presentation. A parody video of what Bill Gates will do when he retires. I’ll hand it to the guy for having enough sense of humor to poke fun at himself. Not many billionaires are up for that.

And of course having a few billion dollars also means you can get lots of famous friends to appear in your video. Like Steven Spielberg, Jay-Z, Matthew McConaughey, Bono, George Clooney, Brian Williams and John Daley. And of course a few political friends like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Al Gore. Friends in high places. And listen closely and you’ll catch a joke about Bill Gates one day running for president.

LumiPrint illuminated photo frame

LumiPrint illuminated photo frame[CES 2008] LumiPrint from Delkin is really neither here nor there, and is actually a different way of doing things. It stresses that it is not a digital photo frame, so you don’t have to worry about memory cards, LCD displays and even digital interfaces - sounds perfect for the older generation who want to literally brighten up their photos without going through the hassle of learning how to use a digital photo frame. Normal photos are illuminated thanks to modified light pipe technology that has been built right into the frame. This light shines through a piece of acrylic, making the acrylic glow brightly which in turn provides illumination for your images. Each LumiPrint package comes with five sheets of LumiPrint photo paper that can be printed on your inkjet printer after adjusting the settings to matte photo paper. The LumiPrint comes with a dimmer switch so you can save power during the day when photos don’t need any illumination. Of course, you can use standard photo prints with the LumiPrint, although you will end up with the words “Kodak”, “Fujifilm” or anything else that is normally printed on the back of each photo.Photos are best printed in 4″ x 6″ size. You can choose to power the LumiPrint using four AA batteries or AC power, and I would recommend the latter if you’re going to be at home all the time. There is no word on battery life at press time, although we do know the LumiPrint will ship this April for $40 a pop.

National Geographic iGen NV20/20

National Geographic iGen NV20/20[CES 2008] National Geographic came up with a night scope last year known as the iGen, and this time they have released an update, boasting night vision technology that snaps photos as well. Black and white images are stored on an SD memory card (no SDHC, but then again I doubt you will be capturing lots of images with this thing) so budding voyeurs who love to stalk lovers walking hand-in-hand in a park at night will probably love to get their hands on this $450 device. Of course, being a NatGeo product, this would be best suited for watching animals rather than humans mate after dusk ;) More specifications are as follows :- Ambient light amplification of 650 timesFunctions in both day and nightVariable Frame Rate (from 2 fps to 30 fps)Infrared Intelligence (3 modes)Enhanced Infrared sensitivityVariable Display BrightnessColor output choicesVideo composite output

Viliv X5 VANT

Viliv X5 VANT [CES 2008] I must say, I am extremely impressed with the Viliv X70 after taking a good, close look at it. While it certainly isn’t the smallest GPS device with PMP capabilities around, you would definitely be pleased with the amount of features crammed in. Not only does the X70 make it a snap to help you get around, it also boasts a host of entertainment options, ranging from YouTube video support to Internet surfing and XviD/DivX/MPEG video playback to keep everyone in the car happy, especially during those long road trips. No longer will you have to hear cries of “Are we there yet?”. The Picture-in-Picture capability also works great to find your way without missing on the movie that your passengers are currently watching. The X70 Vant is tipped to be released sometime in March this year for approximately $600. Dummy Camera aims to fool

Dummy Camera aims to fool[CES 2008] This Dummy Camera aims to fool folks into thinking that your pad or office is well protected, but it actually resembles the real thing without any recording capability of sorts. The camera itself measures a realistic 4″ x 2.25″ x 2″ and comes with a mount to deter would-be thieves from breaking into your home whenever you’re away for a long vacation. The housing is made out of weatherproof anodized aluminum, so you won’t experience rust anytime soon that gives the game away. The blinking red LED light is powered by a couple of AA batteries in order to up the realism ante. Too bad you can’t remotely control it to pan and tilt at random to fool folks. Do you think having something like this at home will act as a deterrent?

Viliv X5 DIC low on connectivity

Viliv X5 DIC low on connectivity[CES 2008] The Viliv X5 DIC is the lowest end of the the X5 range, as it shares all the same hardware specifications with the X5 VANT and the X5 AIO, but loses out in terms of connectivity. There will be no internal GPS chipset, no WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity or even mobile TV. There is also no option to add an HSDPA/WiBRO/WiMAX module so you can forget about going online with the X5 DIC. As you can tell from the name, the X5 DIC comes with an 11-language dictionary, making this suitable for kids and college students alike who are keen to pick up a new language. I suppose it would come especially handy when you’re watching a movie and want to find out the meaning of an unknown word in the subtitles. It is estimated that the Viliv X5 DIC will hit the streets sometime this March for approximately $600.
