Cable controversy: digital signals are just bits, but it does not mean that nothing can go wrong

Cable Controversy: Digital Signal is just bits, but it does not mean that it cannot go wrong

I have seen a lot of controversy about whether or not more expensive cables are worth their price, and the argument that comes often is that digital signal is just bits (0 and 1) and is therefore not degradable. And while I’m attempting to settle the “expensive versus cheap” cables debate, I would like to comment about this notion.

A digital signal is by nature more “resistant” to degradation, but it doesn’t mean that it is immune to degradation. With an increase in the length of the cable, and in the frequency (how fast the signal switches between 1 and 0), errors can be introduced, bits might be lost and sometimes error correction protocols might not be able to fix them. For a video signal, this might produce randomly blinking pixels (which would be more visible on a very large screen/projector), blocky corruption artifacts or plain black screen. However, it *cannot* produce a fuzzier image, like a “bad” analog cable might.

Thinnest plasma TV to debut at CES 2008

Thinnest plasma TV to debut at CES 2008[CES 2008] If you can’t have the largest plasma TV display in the world, then there is always another accolade you can gun for - the thinnest across the entire globe. That’s exactly what Pioneer aims for with its 9mm thin HD plasma TV that will be unveiled at CES 2008. 9mm translates to a wee bit under 1cm, so one can just imagine how thin the display must be. I suppose it ought to come with the sign “Lovely to see, nice to hold; once broken, considered sold” wherever this svelte plasma display is sold in the future. More details to come at CES 2008.

WiMedia to make appearance at CES

WiMedia to make appearance at CES

[CES 2008] The WiMedia standard will be on display at CES 2008 next week, and it looks set to be the wireless replacement of the future, assuming all goes well with its implementation. You’ve got to love the idea of wireless USB as it does away with all the hassle of wires that we suffer from today despite the universal ease and convenience of USB. WiMedia is touted to be “a worldwide standard that is the underpinning of both Wireless USB from the USB Implementer’s Forum and Bluetooth from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. Covering a wide swath of frequencies (3.1 to 10.6 GHz), using band-hopping techniques and very low power transmissions (to limit interference potential while preserving the appropriate distance range) the WiMedia radio provides very high data rates while remaining the most battery-efficient way to move large amounts of data.” [Press Release]

Rumor: HD-DVD Xbox to be launched at CES?

Rumor: HD-DVD Xbox to be launched at CES?

Ok, it’s that time of the year again: the word on the street is that the Xbox360 will have an integrated HD-DVD drive. The announcement would be made at CES by Bill Gates himself. I don’t know if that’s true or not. It is certainly technically possible, but the cost doesn’t sound right. HD-DVD drives are still somewhat expensive, compared to a standard DVD one.

However, I might have missed a XB360 cost-reduction cycle, or may be Microsoft can decide to lose more money on the hardware – it’s just hard to tell, but stay tuned!

Cloud of Promise USB flash drive

Cloud of Promise USB flash drive Looks like Lenovo is going to milk the 2008 Olympics for all it’s worth, not only offering Olympic-centric computers but have moved on to the floppy disk’s successor - the USB flash drive. What do you think about the “Cloud of Promise” theme that adorns this little bugger? The distinctive swirl has certainly seen better days, and I personally ain’t too hot for the design on something as common as a USB flash drive. I suppose you have to fork out a slight premium over a regular, equal-capacity USB flash drive for this “collector’s item”.

Wireless Order System from Apple

Wireless Order System from AppleApple has filed for a patent that would provide a wireless LAN-type system that targets retail shopping specifically if approved. The “wireless communication system” patent is tipped to receive a remote order from a wireless client before prepping it for processing. It will then transfer that order to a different queue for processing. Customers can place their orders via a “wireless media player, a wireless personal digital assistant, [or] a cellphone.” Should this shopping idea take off, will there be a need for front line staff sometime down the road? I think that the human touch is still important, although others who prefer convenience will gladly skip the waiting in long queues as well as employees who have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

If you don’t own a digital TV or HDTV, and don’t plan on getting one by February 17th, 2009 then you might want to check out the Federal Government’s TV Converter Box Program. The feds has started taking requests for a subsidized coupon of $40 to help offset the cost of buying a TV converter so you can continue to receive over-the-air broadcasts. If you haven’t heard at midnight on February 17, 2009, most television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to all digital. The move will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders plus a portion of the spectrum is going up for sale via a public auction. The coupons will begin mailing on February 17th of this year and will be available until the date of the switch or when they run out funds.

Skype coming to the PSP - Proof

Skype coming to the PSP

[CES 2008] The CES 2008 website from Sony shows that the PSP will feature Skype support – something that is definitely not out today. The PSP video also give the information away, although it shows up only for 1 frame! It’s an interesting Easter egg and apparently, we are the first to have caught it :)

FCC gives nod for Nokia 5610

FCC gives nod for Nokia 5610 Nokia’s 5610 that hails from the XpressMusic line has just received the almighty FCC’s approval, and at first glance one might mistake it to be the Nokia 5310. Upon closer inspection, you will find out otherwise as the 5610 not only contains all the better features of its little brother, but sports a superior digital camera, (claimed) prolonged battery life and a slew of other innovations. Of course, this is an upper mid-range handset that squarely targets music lovers. The Nokia 5610 is tipped to hit your local retailer within the next couple of months at a yet undisclosed price.
