Named the recreation Grand Award Winner for 2007 by Popular Science, “The Ride” by Ellsworth is the bike Leonardo da Vinci would have built. Based on a sketch by the universal genius, The Ride’s rear hub has roots in the 15th century.
The Ride’s rear hub mimics an infinite number of gears, rather than the mere 21 offered by the usual chain-yanking transmission. So you can always find the perfect gear ratio, whether starting from a stop or speeding down a hill. Twist a dial on the handlebar, and ball bearings in the bike’s NuVinci transmission tilt between two rotating metal discs. (Your pedaling turns one disc; the other transfers power to the rear wheel.) As the balls tilt, they touch the discs at varying angles.
The Ride’s revolutionary, or evolutionary, transmission will almost certainly lead to a multitude of uses from cars to turbines.

All of it is not for the maps: it is also a portable multimedia player (as many GPS these days), a dictionary. Zhang Xiachang (in the photo) is a Chinese researcher that has created this paper-like battery that is 0.5mm thick and can be bent and rolled like paper. It looks much more advanced than the paper-thin battery that we posted about back in August.
We don’t know what the battery life looks like for this one, but we have a question: can we get a paper-like eBook now? With progress made flexible displays, and now this battery, it seems that paper-like eBook are ever closer. Would you like to have one “magazine” that could download all the stuff that you would ever want to read?

We got word that this Epoq 4GB PMP was going to be demoed at CES 2008. It has a clean design and a light weight: 90g. I don’t see MPEG4 in the list of supported format (or DivX), so you’ve been warned. The Epoq reminds me a little of the Olympus m:robe 500, that turned out to be a flop.

Want to pimp out your car? You can do so with these dice speakers from Bird Electronics. Each dice-type speaker comes adorned with cute cartoons by TAKA Tetsu Shima, with a quartet of variations to choose from. You also get a stereo mini-jack that enables you to hook them up to portable players. Most of the speaker is made out of plastic save for the rubber base. Choose from dense wax white, black/white, or white colors for $46 a pop. For those living outside of Japan, tough luck since they seem to be confined to the Land of the Rising Sun only.

Duplicate DVDs on the go with the DVD Coach Single Target Duplicator. This portable disc duplicator is compact and can pack in a couple of disc trays into less space than what a standard external drive would take up. Write speeds currently stand at 8x for DVDs and 16x for CDs, and operates as either a standalone disc duper equipped with an onboard LCD display and controls or hooked up to a computer courtesy of a USB 2.0 connection. In addition, you will be able to burn audio CDs from a playlist directly or use it as a multi-mode audio CD player, depending on what floats your boat. The DVD Coach Single Target Duplicator has a retail price that rests between $350 and $450.

JVC’s HP-FX500 earphones come in wood - a rather unique material considering how everyone else is using plastic these days. According to JVC, the use of wood enhances audio quality, but that remains to be tested. Do you think it is but a psychological advantage? In any case, each pair retails for approximately €100 which is rather pricey, not to mention it being more flammable than ordinary plastic.

Samsung isn’t about to quit the slim race just yet, with their latest effort resulting in a 31″ AMOLED TV. This new display touts to be the largest ever of its kind, measuring a mere 4.3mm thin. Now that’s really thin, and when placed side by side with your LCD TV, your possession would look as though it was an overweight elephant. Not only is it much slimmer, it also boasts a superior contrast ratio compared to standard flat panel displays while consuming just half the power of a 32″ LCD TV. This new AMOLED TV has a 35,000 hour rating, which means you can run it for four years without turning it off - the longest for any AMOLED display to date.
