It works like it’s supposed to: only a list of known fingerprints will open this safe, and it is deemed secure enough to store firearms, so it should be good enough for your hard disks, jewelry and other valuable assets as well. I don’t think that it is fire-resistant, if that’s important to you.
Note that some people say that a fingerprint is left on the fingerprint reader on, and that it could be used by theft. I don’t know if it is true, but if someone does, please leave a comment.

Flash memory are said to have fallen by as much as 25% on the bulk market, according to memory chipmakers. Few consumers know (or care), but Apple is the biggest Flash customer and basically defines demand and prices. It is reported that a lower demand from Apple led to a short-term oversupply, which in turns, led to falling prices. There’s no panic, but I’d like to ask: “can I get a cheap SSD now?”
It is likely that demand will pick-up later in the year as flash memory becomes even more popular, displacing low-capacity disk-drives in laptops and power-sensitive applications.

The Motorola ROKR E8 seems to have a slick design, with a flat illuminated keypad that will fade away in the shiny black body when not in use. From a data perspective, only EDGE (2.5) is used, but this is a music phone, not a productivity device. [Uberphones]

Watching the steady stream of Clones coming from China is an endless entertainment (at least when you don’t make the original phones…). This phone is (heavily) inspired form the Samsung F300 also called “Upstage” at Sprint. The clone works on the same principle: one side is a phone and the other side is an MP3 player.
The manufacturing quality of this clone doesn’t match the Samsung F300 one, but the Chinese version improves upon two weaknesses of the F300: the phone screen is bigger and it uses a scroll wheel. [uberphones via PMPtoday]

A patent application from Apple reveals that an automatic volume control feature would let the device decide what sound volume is safe enough to avoid hearing loss. From the patent:
“Since the damaging effect on users’ hearing is both gradual and cumulative, even those users who are concerned about hearing loss may not behave in a manner that would limit or minimize such damaging effects.”
One deployed, it will be hard to sue Apple for hearing losses

At CES 2008, Panasonic will demonstrate its 150 inches plasma display, the world’s largest, at least until the show opens…
Panasonic has a history leading the Plasma Display industry, oftentimes running neck to neck with Samsung in the display size arms race. This race to build bigger displays won’t continue forever, in our opinion: at 3.5 meters of diagonal, it becomes a little hard to fit in the average living room, particularly in Europe or Asia

I don’t know if there warez parties these days, but if there were, this EZ Dupe duplicator would be very popular there. The device must be slightly bigger than four CD boxes stacked on top of each other. It copies DVDs at 8x speeds and CDs at 16x speeds, which is decent. As you have guessed, it can copy discs without being connected to a PC, but if you do connect it, I can also uses Lightscribe to engrave an image on the disc.

Blackhawk, a military uniform provider is coming out with a new uniform that incorporates tourniquets into the arms and legs. The idea came from an Army surgeon Dr. Keith Rose, after watching a fellow solider bleed to death.
Rose could not get his comrade a tourniquet, which could have helped control the bleeding on his wounded leg, and sat along the mangled wreckage and talked with him as he took his last breath.
“It really kind of frustrated me,” Rose said.
Once he returned to the U.S., Rose approached BlackHawk, a provider of military and law enforcement gear, with an idea to create clothes with built-in tourniquets.
The uniforms will be fitted with eight tourniquets and available in March.

We have been talking about the Optimus OLED keyboard since 2006, and the wait is not over: the Optimus Keyboard won’t be fully ready until February 2008, because the software hasn’t been completely worked out.
If you haven’t heard of this keyboard earlier: each key is a tiny display that can be reprogrammed, depending on the context, to adjust to a particular software, or language. It is just uber-cool.
It looks like Art Lebedev will ship the pre-ordered keyboards with the current firmware. It’s not clear what the software issue is, but it is hopefully not too bad and users can simply update the device later. Product website, Pre-order ($462)
