An asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, is on course to hit Mars near the end of January. The asteroid, was discovered in November and scientist had the odds of it striking the red planet at 350 to 1, but recently upgraded those odds to 75 to 1.
“We know that it’s going to fly by Mars and most likely going to miss, but there’s a possibility of an impact,” he said.
If the asteroid does smash into Mars, it will probably hit near the equator close to where the rover Opportunity has been exploring the Martian plains since 2004. The robot is not in danger because it lies outside the impact zone. Speeding at 8 miles a second, a collision would carve a hole the size of the famed Meteor Crater in Arizona.
As long as it’s not hitting Earth, this flying rock stuff is kind of cool.

Can you guess the celebrity snapping picts with their iPhone?
It’s Rose McGowan taking a few shots on the street with her Apple iPhone. Shame they’re only 2 megapixels.

This will interest users who might want to build or upgrade their Media Center PC (or HTPC in general). By now, you should all know what a GeForce 8800 GT is, but it is a nice to see a passive-cooled (no fan) version of such a fast graphics card.
If you’re on a budget, take a look at the GeForce 8600, it also has full hardware video decoding and Gigabyte offers a passive-cooled version called SilentPipe.

This is yet another digital photo frame, but it can dock an iPod, making it instantly cool - well, may be. It would work nicely for people who actually have a bunch of photos in their iPod. Once fused, the two devices could even become the most expensive photo frame ever (for its size). To be fair, it has more features than most digital frames:

I always liked the fact that arcade games scenarios can usually be written on a smurf’s Kleenex, but what’s good for a beat-them-up fighting game might not be such a good idea for a Hollywood movie. People just don’t learn form the past, let’s say from… Street Fighter 2, the movie.
Anyhow, the man who is supposed to pull this off is Dwight Little, whose work can be seen in Steven Seagal’s “Marked for death”… (Tekken 5)

This is just a concept at the moment, but Nissan has been playing with the idea of embedding a micro-wave oven into this minivan, in case someone wants a quick snack.
I’m not a big fan of mini-vans, but my friend Samuel Cake does, and I’m sure that he would appreciate the large windows, kids/drunk-buddies camera, seat-speakers, DVD player and other gadgets featured in this concept. More photos on this site

It has been reported that Apple will use Intel’s ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) platform for its next-generation devices. We speculate that this might include an ultra-portable laptop and a touch-based device that might look like a bigger iPhone.
The Intel “Menlow” platform is very important for upcoming gadgets: it is made of “Silverthorne”, a tiny, low-power processor and “Poulsbo”, the chipset that controls the motherboard.
Is it surprising that Apple goes to Intel for this stuff? Not really, simply because there aren’t a lot of options out there. There’s no way that Apple will use VIA, like many others do, because they are too low-end. It is also unlikely that Apple would try to build this by itself. The good news is: expect ultra-small computers from Apple in 2008.

Princeton University researchers have a concept that might push the semi-conductor industry further in the race to speed and miniaturization: According to them, building transistors out of grapheme (layers of graphite), would allow faster switching speeds, which would basically mean higher frequencies (Ghz).
The “why it is possible” is not really explained in the source article, but one of the researcher believes that the technology could be adapted to manufacture chips in “a few years”.
That sounds very optimistic to say the least. First, they need to create wafers that are 200mm big, secondly, the surface has to be near perfect, or the number of rejects will skyrocket. And that’s just the building blocks, more needs to happen before engineers can design for a new process.

Presto is a connected printerPresto is a connected printer. It can receive emails and photos without being hooked to a computer. The printer costs $150 and comes with a $10/mo service, although the service doesn’t seem to cover the internet connection. Anyhow, it works a little like an Email to fax setup, and it is possible to SPAM-filter incoming messages (requires some setup). Did anyone out there try it?

Apple is looking for a QA engineer that would test their Exchange and outlook functionality in the iPhone. Well, at least that means that there is something to test.
Many professionals have to carry an iPhone and a Blackberry, which not always an optimum solution. With a good, native support for Exchange, the iPhone will go from being a very cool cellphone for Yuppies, to a productivity tool like a Blackberry (slight exaggeration). Who will be hurt the most in your opinion? Windows Mobile or Blackberry?
Should we expect an iPhone “Exchange Update” soon?
