SM30/ Duplus+ mouse from Samsung

SM30/ Duplus+ mouse from Samsung

Samsung has just introduced the SM30/ Duplus+ mouse to the Korean market. It comes in an unorthodox for factor - a purely rectangle shape that does not look to be too easy on your hands when used for long periods of time. Targeting laptop users, the SM30/ Duplus+ comes with a laser pointer function to aid you in your presentations. Other features include an ergonomic wheel key and keyboard function support. This unique pointing device is powered by a lithium-polymer battery and has a working range of 10 meters. Thankfully it is wireless, so you don’t have to be shackled by pesky wires especially when you’re going to make a presentation of sorts in front of an audience. No idea on how much it costs though.

Toshiba offers new 1.8-inch HDDs

Toshiba offers new 1.8-inch HDDs Toshiba leads the way again with its new range of 1.8″ hard drives that target both computer and consumer electronics (CE) applications. The high capacity 120GB model that will be used in notebooks as well as the single platter 80GB and 60GB models targeting the UMPC and portable handheld CE devices are the main highlights. The 120GB MK1214GAH, the 60GB MK6028GAL and the lightweight 80GB MK8025GAL all weigh two grams less than traditional 5-millimeter-high 1.8″ HDDs, boasting a PATA interface, 2MB buffer and 512 byte-per-sector format. As for the 60GB, 5mm high MK6014GAL, it comes with a 4,200 RPM spin speed and 2MB buffer for faster data throughput, while the MK6015GAA supports a 3,600 RPM spin speed for quieter operation. Guess hard drive-based CE products next year will definitely up the ante where storage is concerned.

Nokia’s uber-Tamagotchi

Nokia’s uber-Tamagotchi

“Nokia now offers a world of virtual pet-care so your pet is never left alone again. Creebies, available through the N-Gage mobile games service, gives each player their own 3D Creebi to care for, entertain, feed and even breed!” (from the press release)

Of course, this goes beyond your ordinary Tamagotchi, the Creebies can breed, interact with other via Bluetooth (playing games or breeding). It says that the Creebies are in 3D, but I have not seen any compelling screenshots. Did you?

Byd:Sign plasma TV going cheap

Byd:Sign plasma TV going cheap

Talk about a bargain - Byd:Sign’s new 42″ plasma TV will retail for a mere $1,298. That’s extremely affordable no matter which country you’re from, and 42″ is the bare minimum you need to enjoy movies in full HD resolution (1080p). Unfortunately, the PH-4203DFK supports a maximum resolution of 1,024 x 768, so you will only be able to take advantage of 720p at best. Other features won’t disappoint though - a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a brightness level of 1,500cd/m2.

Zebra Blu-ray/HD DVD player

Zebra Blu-ray/HD DVD player

Addonics Technologies unveiled the Zebra Blu-ray / HD DVD optical storage solution which enables your computer to play movies in both formats, making this yet another hybrid drive to arrive on the market albeit on the PC platform. In addition to handling all your next generation high definition movie needs, the Zebra also does standard DVDs and CDs in various file formats and burns DVD±R/RW and CDRW media, making this one truly impressive device. You will be able to choose from a high speed eSATA connection or a combination eSATA and USB 2.0 interface, depending on your needs. The Addonics Zebra measures 10.16″ x 6.61″ x 2.36″ and weighs 3.72 lbs. It has been slapped with a $409 price tag for the model with eSATA interface, or $429 for the one sporting a combination eSATA and USB 2.0 interface. Definitely way cheaper than standalone high definition players, and with more and more computer users upgrading their monitors to 24″ and beyond, this sounds like a pretty solid investment without having you take any sides.

Kyocera iBurst wireless access system

Kyocera iBurst wireless access systemKyocera has introduced a new external modem known as the iBurst wireless Internet access system, capable of transferring data at a maximu theoretical speed of 2Mbps. That’s two times faster than what current iBurst modems can offer, and this new model will roll out sometime in March next year. The iBurst system offers commercial Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) services in 11 countries worldwide, aggregating two data streams (uplink and downlink) for a single user. Actual user data rates vary from place to place, so be wary of the 2Mbps claims you see here.

ZVUE MP3 player pre-loaded with songs

ZVUE MP3 player pre-loaded with songs

ZVUE’s ZP3 digital audio player does not let you go home empty-handed - it is pre-loaded with 30 of this year’s top hits, and has been made available in more than 3,400 Wal-Mart stores and other retailers throughout the US. Unfortunately, the ZP3 MP3 player has a paltry 512MB of internal memory - looks like there are no improvements in terms of hardware one year after its launch. 512MB of space roughly translates to 125 songs in MP3 format. The ZVUE ZP3 supports DRM WMA music files, the MTP (media transport protocol) standard, and Windows Media Player 10. A single AAA battery is capable of powering the ZVUE for up to 8 hours. Audio is transferred between the computer to the ZVUE ZP3 via a USB connection. 30 top hits of the year eh, sounds like a bag of mixed surprises to me. If you’re into something a little bit more updated, why not check out the ZVUE 260 portable media player?

The Geminid Meteor shower for 2007 will be reaching its peak over the next couple of days. Here’s video of the shower taken from last year’s event. Pretty cool. Below are a few tips on the best way to view this years Geminid shower depending on where you live. This meteor shower is active from November 30 through December 18th, with maximum activity occurring on the 14th. Near maximum activity this shower can produce over 100 shower members per hour as seen from rural locations.

Observers in the southern hemisphere can also enjoy the Geminids, but at a reduced rate since the radiant is located lower in their northern sky. From far southern locations Geminid activity is visible for only a few hours centered between 0100 and 0200 LST.

For northern observers, the best strategy is to center your watch between the hours of 0100 and 0200. At this time one can face in any direction and view the most activity. Be sure to look approximately half way up in the sky opposed to straight up. Viewing closer to the horizon allows you to look though a thicker slice of the atmosphere where you will see more activity.
