PSPhone concept

PSP phone concept

Now here’s a Sony Ericsson PSP phone concept to get you drooling over. You get a dual slider design just like that found in the Nokia N95, whereby sliding it downwards will reveal a numeric keypad that we see on everyday handsets, while doing otherwise unveils a pristine set of gaming controls. WiFi connectivity, a built-in media player and a 3.2 megapixel camera rounds off the list of features. Should such a concept actually materialize from Sony, it would be nice to see just how the battery life fares considering the amount of functions crammed into it. Another issue of concern would be the UMD format - will Sony be going ahead with it, or revert to its proprietary Memory Sticks?

Rumors of a PSP Phone surfaced before, but Sony dismissed them back then.

Wiimote interacts with whiteboard

Wiimote interacts with whiteboard

The Wiimote is one truly versatile device when placed in the right hands - Johnny Chung Lee has taken it apart and modified it to become a makeshift multi-point interactive device that works fine with a whiteboard. He uses an IR-emitting pen that is tracked by the Wiimote, where all relevant information will be relayed to a computer. This basically means you will be able to turn virtually any surface into a multi-point whiteboard with the use of a projector. How about letting your LCD display double up as a touchscreen of sorts? All that is possible with Johnny Chung Lee’s invention, and he is generous enough to share the necessary software free of charge. Check out the video of it in action here.

AskEraser Can privacy control give Ask.com an edge?

AskEraser Can privacy control give Ask.com an edge?

In case you don’t know many search engines store all the search requests, including the IP address, the search phrase (and potentially more) for future data-mining. This causes some users to worry for the privacy of their search usage, as a company might give the information to authorities, or could simply be hacked.

To address this, Ask has come up with AskEraser, a privacy feature that puts the user in control of what information is stored on Ask’s servers. When switched on, your recorded activity on Ask will be deleted within hours.

Will that give Ask a commercial edge? I think that it’s a good feature, but I don’t believe that it will change the overall balance of power in the search world.

Asimo gets upgraded

Asimo gets upgraded Honda’s Asimo is widely regarded to be one of the most advanced commercial robots which has been developed to date, and Honda engineers certainly aren’t taking things easy as they continue to work on improving Asimo. While Asimo is capable of performing complex tasks like running around, walking up and down stairs as well as avoid walking into walls, he has been further augmented with better objects detection capability as well as a longer lasting battery. Too bad it still can’t play the violin unlike Toyota’s offering.

Nurian X10 electronic dictionary

Nurian X10 electronic dictionary

The latest electronic dictionary known as Nurian X10 features two LCD displays to get you started - the exterior display works pretty much like those early dual LCD clamshell handsets, showing basic information like the current time, date and remaining battery life. Open it up and you will find a touchscreen LCD display for all your navigation and viewing needs. Features include an integrated MP3 player, a voice recorder, a built-in radio, an electronic scheduler, an image/text viewer as well as 53 different dictionaries in four languages - English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The touchscreen-based display makes life much easier for languages which use ideograms instead of alphabets in their writings. Battery life is pretty impressive - 14 hours, 11 hours and 5 hours for the dictionary, MP3 playback and video playback respectively. If you’re in Korea and are interested in the Nurian X10, it retails for approximately $345.

Nokia Eco Sensor concept

Nokia Eco Sensor concept

Nokia has been toying with some concept ideas, coming up with the Eco Sensor Concept that comes in two parts - the handset itself as well as a wearable strap. The reason for the strap would be to monitor the owner’s vital statistics in addition to local weather conditions. There is no need for any batteries with the wearable strap since it will hold solar cells that relies upon the power of the sun for juice instead. As for the phone itself, it will not be bigger than a relatively chunky timepiece, and will be manufactured from plant-based plastics and 100% recycled steel. The second part is the wearable strap (right - in more typical dimensions) made from solar cells which not only power the device but also monitor local weather conditions and the owner’s vitals.

NES controller backpack

NES controller backpack

Now don’t get all too excited - the NES controller that you see behind this officially licensed Nintendo backpack is nothing more than a graphic, so as tempted as you are to push those familiar red buttons, your fingers will meet nothing but fabric. This NES controller backpack boasts a roomy main compartment as well as three external zipper pockets. I suppose that’s more than enough space to fit in just about anything casual. Who wants to bet that 20 years down the road, you’ll find a DS Lite backpack? The NES controller backpack retails for $40 each.

D-Link to make 802.11n affordable

D-Link to make 802.11n affordable

D-Link has plans to lower the price of its 802.11n router to less than the half century mark in order to undercut rivals such as Belkin, Linksys, and SMC. While D-Link is known to offer some of the lowest-cost wireless routers on the market, dipping under the $50 barrier is still a milestone as its previous wireless routers never went below that number, although they were well priced under the $100 mark. Word on the street has it that this super affordable model will most likely be based on the DIR-615. t and has offered wireless routers significantly below the $100 level in the past, but until today has not crossed the $50 barrier. The model is most likely the base DIR-615. Would you jump onto the 802.11n bandwagon at that price?
