LV USB Design concept for geeks

LV USB Design concept for geeksThe LV USB Design concept from Fred de Garilhe is the epitome of luxury where USB gadgets are concerned, created using white or yellow gold. Not only that, you can choose from ostrich leather or black alligator leather for that added touch of opulence while a digital/analog watch adorns the curvy case. Needless to say, you can hook up this ultra luxurious USB device to your computer to carry personal and important data wherever you go. No word on when this concept will materialize, but aren’t we supposed to conserve the earth’s resources instead of indulging ourselves in blatant and extravagant displays of wealth?

GuardTrax GPS tracking device

GuardTrax GPS tracking deviceThe FCC has just approved the GuardTrax GPS tracking device that caters specifically to security guards who are keeping watch over a certain building or asset. It utilizes GPS technology to acquire the location of the security officer on duty while compiling information on time, heading, and speed among others. GuardTrax will then transmit data to a remote server via GSM/GPRS networks, processing and posting relevant information to a GIS web-based mapping application that includes satellite imagery. Should an emergency arise, the server will alert the supervisors in charge through email or an SMS so that they can respond accordingly. You can even set a security geo-fence around the monitored post to make sure your guards don’t cross this border to slack off in the janitor’s room.

Squirt Spoon feeds babies

Squirt Spoon feeds babiesThe Squirt Spoon is but a novel idea of a baby bottle - the orange bulb portion is capable of holding approximately 3 ounces of baby food, and when squeezed, it will dispense just the right amount of food on the spoon as required, making everything less messy whenever you want to feed your newborn. One more advantage would be the lower chances of an accidental mess happening as your baby won’t be able to throw his/her bowl in a tantrum. The spoon section is easily removable whenever you want to fill it or clean it, and it can also be swapped with a cover whenever you want to store the bulb in the fridge between feedings. The Squirt Spoon is perfect for your little…er, squirt, retailing for $7.99.

Run Windows apps minus Windows

Run Windows apps minus Windows Ever wished you could have all the functionality of Windows applications without installing Windows? Here’s a tip from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories. I recently came across an esoteric “Windows only” electrical engineering program that I wanted to run on my Mac (LTspice/SwitcherCAD III — more about that later). And, while contemplating the $200-$300 cost of a legitimate Windows license, it might occur to you that the goal in this case is to run a program that runs under Windows– not actually to run Windows itself. So why not look at Wine? Wine is a venerable software compatibility layer that allows unix-like operating systems to run programs designed for Windows. It turns out that there is even a Parallels-like virtualization environment so that you can run programs programs in Wine alongside Mac programs. It’s called Crossover Mac, and it’s $60 from Codeweavers. No idea on why you would want to do that, but I suppose the fact that knowing you could do so is good enough.

AMD FireStream 9170

AMD FireStream 9170

AMD has announced the FireStream 9170, a graphics processing unit (GPU) aimed at intensive computing. It supports double-precision (64 bits) floating point (FP) numbers, which is required by some researchers just to consider developing on a specific platform. While many applications have been developed with single-precision numbers (as demonstrated by rival NVIDIA), other computing techniques simply require double-precision to work.

As usual, the press release is written in PR jibberish, but in short, it’s a paper-launch (no product available yet) and it is not clear if the 500 GFlops mentioned in AMD’s press release have been theorized using single or double precision numbers.

Here is a photo gallery to show you how it looks on all sides. Fortunately, it’s pretty thin - phew! (More photos in the full post)
