SPOT holds the distinction of shipping the first satellite messenger in the world. This device is portable, rugged and simple to use, and was specially designed to improve personal safety of folk who tend to spend lots of time outdoors, be it for recreational or work purposes. A single push will let SPOT transmit the user’s precise location and message to a 911 emergency call center whenever there is an emergency, and this alert can also be routed to friends, family and colleagues. It sends the user’s exact GPS satellite location over a commercial satellite network, hence the issue of cellular coverage is made redundant. The SPOT satellite messenger measures approximately 4.38″ x 2.75″ x 1.5″ and retails for $169.99, excluding an annual service fee of $99.99. You can also opt for an automatic tracking service for $49.99 while a private rescue service for places with non-responsive emergency services cost an additional $7.95. There are several message and tracking functions including:
Alert 9-1-1 - signals an emergency response center to dispatch emergency responders to an exact location Ask for Help - sends a request for help to friends and family Check In - lets contacts know where you are and that you are OK Track Progress - sends and saves your location and allows your selected contacts to track your progress using Google Maps and www.findmespot.com with password-protected security.

The USB Ferris Wheel Phone Stand is one cute desktop peripheral as it cradles your handset, revolving the ferris wheel whenever there is an incoming call or text message. Physical movement is accompanied by tinkling just in case your blaring ringtone isn’t loud enough to capture your attention (and those in the surrounding cubicles at the office). The USB Ferris Wheel Phone Stand makes an interesting office gift idea, and will set you back by $27. It can be powered via USB or a couple of AA batteries.

This miniature piano looks like a music box at first glance, and upon closer inspection you’ll realize that it is actually a tiny CD player. The Cathay PK-24 desktop stereo disguises its playback controls as piano keys, while built-in speakers are located at the sides of the piano case. An integrated FM radio helps to keep you entertained whenever you’ve run out of CDs to listen to. Choose from black, white and hot pink colors. The Cathay PK-24 retails for a rather startling $173 a pop.

Forget HD DVD and Blu-ray for the moment - LG has released its GSA-E60N DVD writer that places it at the top of performance charts, burning DVD+/-R at 20x. This feat is not the only one in town though as Samsung has achieved a similar speed with its SH-203N DVD burner. The LG offering is an external burner that works over USB, featuring LightScribe disc etching that makes it a whole lot easier to label your burned DVDs instead of taking the marker pen route. The LG GSA-E60N will retail for approximately £40 when it is released at the end of this month.

Youths have Facebook, MySpace and Friendster social networking sites to keep up with the latest on each other, while folks over 50 often scan the obituaries before they even lay eyes on the headlines in the morning paper. Saga Zone aims to change all that, launching an Internet social networking site ala Facebook and MySpace, catering to those who have crossed the half century mark. Since its inception four months ago, Saga Zone have 13,000 users with the oldest person being 87 years of age. Saga Zone also features forums on various subjects such as dealing with grandkids, gardening tips and even relationship advice - that ough to get the notion out of young whippersnappers that oldies are all but fizzled out when it comes to romance.

The British Ministry of Defence are currently working on a new technology that aims to make tanks invisible to the naked eye, hoping to roll out the first of such war machines in 2012. This technology involves using cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto the tank - a terrifying thought if you’re part of the enemies’ infantry division. I’m not too sure if this technology will be stable and fully workable though, and will it disguise heat signatures from the tank? The only drawback at this point in time is the reliability of cameras and projectors, but the MoD folks are already working hard on making the tank invisible without them - a possible although intricate and complicated process.

Jensen has just released its Anyware PC that comes in the form of a tablet. This tablet is powered by Windows XP and comes with a 30GB hard drive, GPS connectivity, WiFi and Bluetooth support, a touchscreen display, and a bunch of other goodies. It isn’t too far off the mark to consider this a detachable car PC. Unfortunately, the $1,500 price tag doesn’t make it appealing to the masses, but if you’re an Internet addict who must get your fix on a relatively large display, this could be just what the doctor ordered. Do you think Internet tablets will be the next big thing? As far as I know, Nokia’s 770 and N800 didn’t exactly capture everyone’s imagination when released and are still niche products.
