Sony has moved on to the 65nm manufacturing process and the fruits of its labor is evident in the new 40GB PS3 that will be launched in the US on November 2nd. This 65nm Cell processor will drop power consumption from 200W to a more environmentally friendly 135W, while boasting a new motherboard revision along with an updated Southbridge. The reduction in power consumption has also resulted in a smaller heatpipe since the demands on it have gone down as well. Would you rather have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, a memory card reader and another two USB 2.0 ports compared to a more energy efficient processor?

Yahoo will be introducing new media-playing features, large file transfer capability and additional languages to its instant messaging service, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This is a strategic move that is a long time in coming since its rivals are also attempting to boost their positions by tweaking their instant messaging services. Yahoo Messenger 9.0 (already?) has just launched a test version, boasting features as found on social networks and media sharing sites in addition to extra space for you to post an image next to contact names along with the ability to share video or photos within a conversation window itself. Half a dozen new languages have been added, catering to the citizens of Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Vietnam, thus expanding its appeal to a grand total of 25 international markets. Looks like the push for media sharing is here to stay.

Google and Verizon Wireless are currently discussing the possibility of introducing handsets to the market via the latter which run on Google’s very own operating system software and applications, and a formal announcement concerning Google’s mobile plans is expected to be made within a couple of weeks’ time. These Google-powered handsets will definitely prove to be a worthy competitor to the iPhone that is currently being offered by AT&T. What do you think of this situation? Would a cellphone running on Google’s OS make your life complete? All I know is, searching for your contacts and text messages would be easier when the time comes - I just don’t know how much so.

Sony Ericsson devices aren’t exactly the most user friendly ones in town, partly due to the hardware and current UIQ user interface. It looks like the company has taken the latter into consideration by tweaking it to keep up with the times (and customers’ grouses, of course). No idea on when this new UIQ interface will be made available, but from what the pictures show, it looks pretty sweet and is definitely a vast improvement over its predecessor at first glance.

TEAC’s latest offering the LP-R400 helps bridge the generation gap between the vinyl disc and CD as it is capable of playing both formats. In addition, it boasts an AM/FM radio and supports CD recording, giving you a last chance saloon to save all your old vinyl discs onto a digital format before mother time takes her toll. Supported vinyls include EP, LP, and SP 78rpm discs. No idea on how much this costs though, but it is currently available in Japan.
