Surely you would want to avoid any kind of last minute hassle, jostling with other rabid parents for a gift to bring home to your kids, do you? Make it a point to shop for Christmas early then with the Roboscorpion. Patterned after the poisonous desert dweller, the Roboscorpion is equipped with an independently moving head, tail, and claws that lethal enough to cut through human skin and bone. I like it so much, I’m afraid some parents might even want to keep one for themselves.

Asustek has just released its P5E-V HDMI motherboard that features multi-display output modes as well as onboard HDMI, allowing users to use their PCs as home entertainment solutions while enjoying full HD 1080p visuals in the living room without a hitch. Great for those who already have the necessary infrastructure such as a large screen full HD TV or monitor. Asustek was also thoughtful, including a HDMI-to-DVI conversion adapter for users who are running on DVI outputs. You can have up to four monitors connected to the P5E-V HDMI since it comes with quad-display output, increasing multi-tasking work efficiency as you no longer need to switch between programs. Guess it is now up to the human to perform ‘parallel workloads’ with this setup - woe to the worker whose boss purchases such a rig for him/her!

I got a demo of the new Digitrad unified communication platform Stand4U from Micha Benoliel, CEO. The service is like Grand Central, but for enterprise. Digitrad makes it possible for companies of any size to set up a VoIP, interactive voice response, and Internet-based PBX telephone services without investing in any new IT infrastructure. Digitrad provides a phone number linked to an interactive voice service that can be easily customized thanks toits user friendly web interface. Another great feature is the Flash virtual phone that allows the user to call any phone number from a web page! I like Stand4U: it is great for small businesses to get a complex phone system with no additional infrastructure investments, paired with an easy to use web interface. The service is available in Europe (UK and France), and it will be available in the US Q1 2008. The Flash Virtual phone will launch in Europe Q1 2008. For more information check out the demo.

This hot dog steamer is definitely unique as it comes in the shape of a dog known as Hero. Hero is capable of steaming up to four hot dogs simultaneously within eight minutes or so, and will bark once they’re ready while turning itself off automatically to prevent your family from experiencing burnt hot dogs. Hero the Hot Dog Steamer will retail for $34.95 - too bad summer’s long over, or else this would’ve made a really great gift. Still, you can always use this in your kitchen for the upcoming holiday season although the BBQ grill’s a better bet for faster hot dog turnover. Ravenous kids (and adults) are much harder to deal with than a rabid dog anyway.

Call me a pussy, but this Sadie Pencil Sharpener sure freaks me out. Designed by artist Matthew James Taylor, this pencil sharpener looks absolutely gruesome, where you stick a blunt pencil into the right eye of this gothic doll’s face. The sharpening action will result in pencil shavings being expelled through her mouth - totally gross! For those who lack the intestinal fortitude (like yours truly) to have one of these on their desks, there are always other alternatives which are way cuter and much less frightening.

As the global population grows, energy conservation is a more important issue than ever before - hence the need for efficient public transport especially in urban areas. While the Japanese have an excellent public transport system, there is always room for improvement as the Railway Technical Research Institute in Kokubunji, Tokyo developed a lithium-powered streetcar which can be recharged in less than a minute. Tests on this new tram will begin at the end of next month, but don’t expect it to carry you to your destination in a speed that would make a Ferrari envious as it maxes out at 40kph and has a 15km radius. Hopefully future advances will be able to translate this technology to future bullet trains.

Xerox is an established name where photocopiers and printers are concerned, and the Phaser 6130 color printer lives up to the company’s rich heritage by delivering 12 pages per minute in color as well as 16 pages per minute in good old black-and-white. Resolution of the Phaser 6130 stands at 600 x 600 x 4dpi as you get 16 shades of color per pixel. 1GB of expandable memory as well as a 333MHz processor within enables the 6130 to handle large jobs without a hitch. In addition, it is capable of printing on rather odd-shaped media such as labels, card stock, business cards and envelopes. The Xerox Phaser 6130 will retail for $399 after a $50 instant-rebate. This offer expires at the end of December.

Sanyo has teamed up with Coca-Cola to develop a new, non-fluorocarbon type cassette unit which employs a natural refrigerant (CO2) compressor. This new compressor includes an efficient Energy Management System that is used for beverage coolers, realizing high efficiency and durability. These new cassette units will be supplied to Coca-Cola in March 2008 next year and will be used in all Olympic venues to provide highly efficient cooling that do not affect the environment by using hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), a potent greenhouse gas. I guess there is nothing quite like seeing how we are borrowing the earth from our children instead of handing it down to them to move us to do our part when it comes to keeping the earth green. This concept motorcoach is different from others as it features Smart light control windows - a technology that blocks over 99% of UV radiation while enabling occupants within to control the amount of sunlight, glare and heat that are being passed through windows and sunroofs. All this is made possible within seconds at the touch of a button, and not only does it provide control over the amount of light, glare and heat passing through the windows, it also has noise reduction properties and superior structural integrity. Sounds like a neat idea for tour buses as it allows the tour guide to selectively reveal scenery during the tour while passengers can adjust the tint of their own windows to their liking. No word on when these Smart Windows will make their way to commercial vehicles though.
