GeForce 8800 GT Spanks the Competition

GeForce 8800 GT Spanks the Competition

Built under the “G92” codename, the GeForce 8800 GT makes its debut today and provides fast DX10 performance at a lower price point, fulfilling the “cheaper, faster, better” motto of any semi-conductor company. The new card literally spanks the competition, offering better performance at almost half the price (benchmark) – quite painful for AMD, really.

Some are complaining that the 8800 GT is “not better” than the 8800 GTX because it has a lower clock speed and a few less “stream processors” (computing units that execute shading code), but they just don’t get it: higher clock speed and more transistors mean higher prices. Building a more efficient chip that performs better with less units and a lower clock is an extraordinary achievement that adds real value. Available on NewEgg for $260.

FPD Day 3 - E-Ink shows their latest e-paper watch and other ideas

FPD Day 3 - E-Ink shows their latest e-paper watch and other ideas

The possibilities of electronic paper or e-paper have been a topic of interest for a while, and E Ink of the US is using FPD International 2007 event to show off their latest ideas for e-paper. An attention grabber was an e-paper watch reportedly developed by the joint Hong Kong-US company Art Tech. Expected to be on sale in December of this year, the e-paper in this latest Christmas gizmo makes it possible to select the face you want the watch to display. One drawback of e-paper is it is a reflective technology, so it gets its light from the ambient light around it, i.e. if it’s dark, you can’t see it. To get around this, E Ink showed off an e-paper display using a front light developed by Japan’s Alps Electronics.

FPDI is also showing that one of the techniques FPD manufacturers are using to slim down their panels depends on the backlight technology being used. The result is you’ll most likely have to pay extra to shave off those additional 6 millimeters or more off of your FPD TV. For example, panels from AU Optronics of Taiwan and LG.Philips LCD of Korea use conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp backlights in their approximately 20 mm thick panels. However, Korea’s Samsung Electronics and Taiwan’s Chunghwa Picture Tubes are betting the attractiveness of their thinner respective 10 mm and14 mm panels will offset the use of more expensive LED backlights. FPD Day 4 - Shinoda Plasma steals FPD International’s thunder

FPD Day 4 - Shinoda Plasma steals FPD International’s thunder

In what certainly wasn’t a coincidence, the inventor of the plasma display, Tsutae Shinoda, chose the same time the FPD International 2007 event was being held to announce that his company, modestly known as Shinoda Plasma Corp. and based in Kobe, Japan, would start production shipments of the company’s “Plasma Tube Array” modules in the second half of 2008. The technology consists of “plasma tubes” sandwiched between upper and lower film electrodes. The company is planning to start shipments of 3×2m PTA modules to set manufacturers in the latter half of 2008 which will then give you the possibility of putting a 142 inch plasma TV in your living room. One advantage of the PTA technology is by using a film substrate, the weight of the module is lower then a conventional plasma module.

However, FPDI continued to produce news. Samsung Electronics of Korea showed off a 19 inch LCD panel made using soda-lime glass. Compared to the glass usually used in LCD panels, soda-lime glass, the same type of glass as used in drink bottles, is cheaper and can be more easily formed. Samsung claimed they were ready to start shipment of LCD panels using this glass. [FDP coverage by NikkeiBP’s Tech On!]

USB Blender Alarm Clock

USB Blender Alarm Clock I’m not too sure what some people’s obsession about blending stuff is all about, but the USB Blender Alarm Clock does add some character to your bedside table. This $25 alarm clock will “shred” and playback some tunes that hail from the 70s only when the set time has been reached. You can choose to hook it up to a nearby USB port (guess you bring your work to the bed, eh) or use standard batteries to power it. The LCD display will show the current time, date, as well as alarm settings as you choose from a quartet of melodies to rouse you from your slumber each morning.

Opera Widgets on KDDI handsets

Opera Widgets on KDDI handsetsKDDI of Japan has just announced that Opera Widgets will be available on the Toshiba W56T, Sony Ericsson W54S and Sanyo W54SA this December. The widget has been dubbed “au one Gadget” by KDDI and aims to provide instant access to various services including RSS feeds, sports results, weather, stocks, news, social networking services and traffic information. This makes it a first where Opera Widgets on cellphones are concerned. Users will be able to download more than a single Gadget onto their device. Guess the Japanese have it much better than the rest of the world - at least in terms of cellphones and consumer electronics.

You clip this device to the overhead visor of any vehicle, and it will try to hook up to any other cellphones or devices that support Bluetooth automatically. This means you no longer have to fumble for your cellphone whenever somebody gives you a ring while you’re driving. Features include a microphone, an internal speaker, and vocalization of incoming caller ID. Interestingly enough, it will automatically freeze music whenever there is an incoming call for you to hold a decent and clear conversation. There is no word on pricing, although the MOTOROKR T505 is tipped to hit retail stores early next year.

Honda Puyo concept car

Honda Puyo concept carThe Honda Puyo concept car is extremely interestin since the vehicle’s body feels like soft gel to one’s fingers. The entire theme of this concept vehicle points toward an adorable pet with its gel body meant to protect its occupants in the event of a collision. In addition, the body is capable of changing its color like a chameleon not to fool traffic officers from giving you a ticket whenever you park your vehicle haphazardly, but to guide the driver and passengers into the proper operating position while notifying them of the vehicle’s condition. Does this mean airbags are phased out?
