iPhone rates in Germany

iPhone rates in Germany Apple and T-Mobile has just dropped the ball concerning rates for the iPhone in Germany. All three “iPhone Complete” plans come with unlimited data, Visual Voicemail, as well as access to T-Mobile’s WiFi hotspots in Germany (more than 8,000 of those around). Starting from €49 monthly, the “Complete M” plan comes with 100 minutes and 40 SMS messages, while the €69 “Complete L” option boasts 200 minutes and 150 SMS messages. For those who want more, there is always the “Complete XL” plan for €89, catering for the power user with 1,000 minutes and 300 text messages. In case that isn’t enough, you’ll need to fork out an additional €0.39/minute in the Complete L and M plans and €0.29/minute in the XL plan, and text messages cost another €0.29. What do you think of these plans?

Xenith X1 smart helmet

Xenith X1 smart helmetThe Xenith X1 smart helmet comes with shock absorbing discs that are able to release air upon impact, where the amount and speed are variable depending on the severity of the impact. This works much better than traditional foam inserts that perform just the same in any situation. The Xenith X1 features a flexible, vented casing embedded with specialized shock absorbers that aim to decrease potential damage to the head and brain of football players. I wonder if such technology ought to be ported over to the NHL as well.

Qantas Airways in-flight phone trial

Qantas Airways in-flight phone trialQantas Airways aims to release preliminary results of its in-flight phone trial before the year is over, and it is hoped that cellphones won’t interfere with in-flight signalling equipment. After all, high powered businessmen as well as those who just want to keep in touch with loved ones on a long journey would love to have the capability of making affordable calls instead of relying on in-flight phones that charge a bomb. Currently, Qantas passengers can communicate via available telephones located in their seats, but hopefully this cheaper option will be made available soon.

Sony Ericsson PXi for lefties

Sony Ericsson PXi for leftiesBence Bogar has developed a Sony Ericsson PXi concept that targets southpaws, although it can be used by right-handers as well. This slim and ergonomic handset is made out of magnesium and boasts a generous 3.3″ touchscreen display. The screen will be able to rotate automatically just like the iPhone and has been optimized for both stylus and finger input. On the right is a jogdial and secondary touchscreen that caters to whatever application that is running currently. There are two memory card slots for those who think 8GB isn’t enough. In addition, this concept PXi comes with stereo speakers and a 5 megapixel Cybershot camera. Sounds like a wet dream, and it is. The battery life ought to be pretty short with these specifications, and what - no 3G?

GameStop shuns away from Xbox 360 replacements

GameStop shuns away from replacementsWoe to those who purchased their Xbox 360s from GameStop as the company has ended their replacement plan for Microsoft’s current-generation console due to the system’s unusually high failure rate. A flier has shown that GameStop will honor current replacement plans until they expire, but you’re out of luck if you’ve been searching for a new Xbox 360 there. Guess GameStop doesn’t have a cool billion to splash around, so this corporate move makes perfect sense. I wonder what potential customers would do next - will they use the money originally intended for an Xbox 360 on a PS3 or Nintendo Wii? Or will they take their money elsewhere and pick up an Xbox 360 from a store that provides extended warranty?

No Commercial Samsung Large Full-HD OLED TV before 2010

No Samsung Large OLED TV before 2010

In what could be the most horrific gadget news of today, Samsung has shown that it does not forecast shipping Full-HD large (40+ inch) OLED TVs before 2010. This makes sense, given that OLED manufacturers are still having yields (% of defective products) issues with OLED and obviously, the more pixels there are and the more likely some will be defective.

OLED, which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, promises thinner TVs with better image quality (contrast, brightness), because each pixel “emits” light, instead of just being a color filter for the backlight. Also, it doesn’t require a perfectly flat piece of glass, unlike LCD and Plasma displays. More OLED stories
