Sprint Will Unlock

Sprint will unlock its phones

Sprint agrees to unlock its phones for California customers to settle a class-action lawsuit, but being a CDMA carrier, Sprint does not have a SIM card that user can pop in and out. Sprint customers could theoretically use their phones on similar networks like Verizon, if Verizon agrees. However, there is still a termination fee if users are still under a service contract.

It is more exciting to think about the ramifications of this settlement, for GSM carriers like T-Mobile and Cingular, whose phone have a SIM card that can be replaced easily by users. AT&T recently came under fire from iPhone users and a similar class-action suit is already at least in the preparation stage.

I think customers should be able to unlock their phones at will. As long as they pay for their service or if they pay the termination fee, they should be in control of their device.

Skatemaster FT-2 Electric Skateboard

Skatemaster FT-2 Electric SkateboardThis electric skateboard is said to be capable of going at 11mph for about 7 miles (obviously, we take it that it was on a flat road and it’s not clear how heavy the rider was). It controlled by a wireless transmitter that one will likely drop and break at the first fall but it is still better than pushing with your leg! After the battery has been depleted, it will take 6 hours to get a full-charge. Price: $290

Marantz CR201 CD Player

Marantz CR201 CD PlayerIf you still haven not converted your CD collection to MP3 files, and if you can afford it, this Marantz CR201 CD player might look very good in the living room or bedroom. It is a nice mirror surface that opens to reveal the CD drive. Just underneath the shiny surface, there’s a primitive display that shows basic information. It’s not easy to trust a flat-speaker, but it is likely that the sound is actually pretty decent. Finally this player has a USB port to play files from a USB drive. Marantz CR201 page (Japanese)

Rabbit Strobe Lights for The Osaka Police

Rabbit Strobe Lights for The Osaka PoliceThis sounds surreal, but in Japan everything is possible: According to Gizmodo Japan, the Osaka Police is equipping some police cars with rabbit-shaped strobe lights. Note that only the patrol cars around schools will get this. Video in the full post.

In-Dash Blu-Ray Player from Panasonic

In-Dash Blu-Ray Panasonic DriveDuring the Tokyo Motor Show, Panasonic was showing this in-dash Blu-Ray player without announcing the price or availability. While the player looks good, we don’t see a good reason to invest in a high-definition system when displays in cars are predominantly small and most can barely support 720p (1280×720 pixel), let alone 1080p (1920×1080 pixel).

Remote-controlled rubber duck

Remote-controlled rubber duckThe humble rubber duck that has kept children occupied and entertained in their respective bathtubs throughout the ages will see a technological improvement in the form of a remote-controlled rubber duck. It will come in the traditional yellow design, but is powered by half a dozen AA batteries instead (2 for the controller and 4 for the duck charger). A 5 minute charge will result in 15 minutes of pure fun - provided your fingers and toes don’t shrivel up like prunes first. Needless to say, both the duck and controller are waterproof so no risk of running a minor electrical shock there.

Takumi Computer Key Calculator

Takumi Computer Key Calculator Now ain’t this a hoot - the Takumi Computer Key Calculator gets a modern update compared to boring old calculator designs, featuring keys from a computer keyboard that makes you feel as though you were punching in those figures from a standard numeric keypad. This battery-opeated device does not only work as a standalone device, it can also be connected to the PC via USB to function with Windows and other Windows-based software, doubling up as an impromptu number pad. The Takumi Computer Key Calculator will come in white, black, red, and beige colors, retailing for approximately $46 a pop.

Boynq Wake Up clock

Boynq Wake Up clock The Boynq Wake Up clock looks totally whacked out, being decked in white while featuring an iPod charging dock of sorts (compatible with the recently released iPods as well as iPhone), an integrated FM radio alarm and a 20W amplifier to get you out of bed during those mornings when you feel that you’d rather sleep in to shake off the hard partying during the weekend. There is a trio of integrated LCD displays that show off the time, radio stations and input channels courtesy of a soft white light whose intensity can be adjusted accordingly. No idea on how much it costs though.
