FPD Day 1 - Thin continues to be in

The major event for the flat panel display industry, FPD International 2007, has started in Yokohama, Japan, and early indications show, as already seen at CEATEC JAPAN 2007, much of the competition is focused on just how thin manufacturers can get those displays. While at CEATEC much of the focus was on large displays for TVs, at FPD International, a lot of the initial interest is around smaller displays for things like mobile phones and digital cameras.

Japan’s Sharp and the large Taiwanese FPD manufacturer AU Optronics have dueling announcements around small form factor FPDs. Sharp is claiming victory with their 0.68 mm thick 2.2 inch FPD being a mere 0.01mm thinner then the 0.69 mm 1.9 inch FPD from AUO. Korea’s LG.Phililips LCD takes a different tack by developing an a-Si TFT-LCD with a 1 mm thick right and left border compared to the industry standard approximately 2 mm border. Such is the competition amongst Asian FPD manufacturers to do their part to make sure you can buy that latest ever so thin mobile phone.

A different approach to thin comes from Japan’s Bridgestone, which is showing off its 0.29 mm thick flexible color electronic paper technology. An interesting point about Bridgestone’s approach is they are looking to produce the E-paper using “roll-to-roll” manufacturing technology, which patterns the electronics on flexible substrates. One of the benefits of this manufacturing process is said to be low cost. Anyone interested in a 4,096 full-color wallpaper video display? [FDP coverage by NikkeiBP's Tech On!]
