Both Honda and Volkswagen are parading their latest generation in-vehicle navigation systems that will be made available as in-dash options in their cars. You get hard drive-based navigation that feature superior data access speeds compared to DVD-based systems, leaving a fair bit of space left for you to store your digital music collection. Honda forges ahead with a 40GB hard drive, while the Volkswagen system embraces three quarters of that amount complete with high resolution maps. As for the Honda system, it comes with a rearview camera, Bluetooth cellphone integration and a TV tuner while supporting Honda’s Internavi Premium Club that sends information such as map updates, weather, and live traffic to the navigation system.

For those who hate folks watching over your shoulder while you’re working, chances are you’ll be thankful that NEC has developed a new kind of LCD technology that allows users to switch between wide and narrow viewing angles on-the-fly without affecting the brightness and sharpness of the image. This is made possible courtesy of a polarizing plate at the back of the new panel that disperses light across either 140 degrees or 30 degrees - something older methods could not achieve without impacting the picture negatively. Currently, such technology allows only two possible fields of vision, and NEC hopes to be more flexible with future iterations.

The highly anticipated Samsung F700 looks set to to makes its way to Verizon users in the near future, and other than that interesting snippet of news, no further details were released and Samsung officials could not be reached for an official comment. Hopefully the F700 will make it in time to appear in my Christmas stocking, as I would love to get my hands on a full touchscreen display complete with a fold-out QWERTY keyboard to send holiday greetings to my family and friends faster than ever before.

The device is bigger than a Blackjack (review), even with the extended battery, but not to the point that I would dismiss it as my everyday phone. It is more attractive than any sliding-keyboard smartphones out there. The 9502 feels solid, especially the display sliding mechanism, which was a good surprise. The keyboard is roomy and will please users with bigger fingers, but I did notice that the keyboard touch was not as good as with the i-mate 8502 (read hands-on), which is exceptional. I did not look at all the Windows Mobile 6 features, but this has been covered extensively already. All in all, I consider the i-mate 9502 to be an extremely interesting smartphone, particularly because of the VGA display (640×480) and the external keyboard/display capabilities. It will be even better when i-mate releases its “Foleo” shell that integrates keyboard and display in a lightweight and cheap format (around $300).
Scoop: i-mate confirmed to us that it will be possible to connect a wired USB keyboard to avoid depleting the phone’s battery with Bluetooth!

If you are going to use a “regular” phone, why not get one that has a lot of style? This phone reminds us of our retired RAZR Dolce & Gabbana, but shinier - and “shiny is good”. We like how the RAZR2 Luxury Edition felt in the hand, thanks partly to it’s (faux-leather?) back surface. If you are near by a strong spotlight, be aware that this device could cause temporary blindness

We got to play with the LG Rumor and it is what we expected: a simple and cheap ($80) messaging device with a full QWERTY keyboard. It is light and feels rather good in the hand. The keyboard is pretty good, and will get the job done. The user interface is very plain, and look like many other entry-level phones, but it is good enough to place calls and send messages quickly. It is “rumored” to be available at Sprint in November.

We have published before about the LG Voyager, but there’s nothing like having some time with the device. The voyager is an interesting device that combines an external touch screen display with a second internal screen and a full-qwerty keyboard. It feels just a little too long in the hand and probably in the pocket, too. However there’s a benefit, the keyboard should be comfortable for bigger fingers and there’s enough room for speakers on each side of the screen, which will comes hand for watching videos. We did not have enough time properly evaluate the usability, but we know enough to answer the question asked many times by our readers: is it an iPhone killer? The answer is NO but if you are interested by video on the go and text messaging, check this phone out.

When HTC announced the Advantage, it created a lot of excitement around the idea of having a portable email device with a bigger keyboard.
Unfortunately, I have to say that the reality doesn’t live up to the hype. After using it, my conclusion is that I would not trade my Samsung Blackjack (read review) for the Advantage. I found the keyboard to be awful– which is bad enough to erase the other qualities of the HTC Advantage. HTC Advantage page, more HTC devices
