Verizon Wireless will make available its UM150 USB modem in all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores as well as its online store from November 2nd onwards. This modem was specially designed to function with all computing devices equipped with a Type A USB port - that would include the majority of desktops, notebooks, and tablet PCs. This would allow access to BroadbandAccess from virtually anywhere courtesy of Verizon Wireless’ national high-speed wireless broadband network. It is compatible with Windows XP and Vista, as well as Mac OS X platforms. You will be able to achieve theoretical average download speeds of 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps, while upload speeds maxes out at 800Kbps. Of course, real world performance is much lower than those figures so don’t set your expectations too high. The UM150 USB modem will retail for $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and new two-year agreement. For those who want to subscribe to BroadbandAccess service for Internet browsing, e-mail and intranet access, it’ll set them back by another $59.99 monthly. [Press Release]

AT&T has just launched its first HSUPA laptop card that sees an increase in upload speeds of HSDPA networks, maxing out (theoretically) at 800Kbps without affecting download speeds. The Sierra Wireless AirCard 881 comes with quadband EDGE support (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and triband HSDPA/HSUPA support (850/1900/2100MHz), enabling it to work virtually anywhere in the world. You can pick up this card for free after the necessary rebates and a new two-year contract. For those who are interested in an unlimited nationwide data plan, you can purchase it from AT&T for $59.99 monthly including taxes.

Motorcyclists are often at a disadvantage where safety is concerned since they are often left defenseless in the event of an accident. The Airbag Jacket aims to help reduce the number of injuries or fatalities on the road by puffing up at the point of impact in order to cushion any potential mortal blows. Airbag Jackets have been around for several years already, and have been proven effective when a Baltimore man was thrown 100 feet from his bike, suffering from just sore ribs and a broken thumb when smashed against the pavement. If you’re a motorcyclist, I’d strongly recommend picking one of these up as it is just about as essential as a helmet, so don’t let the $500 price tag prevent you from forgetting about your own safety.

The EU has decided to allow cellphone calls to be made while you’re in the air, ten thousands of feet above the ground courtesy of a new technology that does not run the risk of interference with aircraft systems. This reservation of space for the required airwaves has already been recommended to the EU countries’ governments before the system can be fully rolled out. On-board phone calls will be redirected to a satellite, and subsequently transmitted to the carrier’s network, resulting in a sky-high price that is on par with your current lofty position. There are limitations to this system though as such phone calls are forbidden whenever the plane is less than 3,000 meters in height.

DS2 has announced that it is capable of transferring data at a theoretical speed of 400Mbps, which is twice as much as existing solutions. The faster equipment will be backward compatible with the 200Mbps one to let users migrate smoothly.
I’m personally using Powerline Ethernet at home and it works very well. It is plug & play and is more or less the equivalent of having a gigantic cable that spans across multiple levels of the place. DS2 website, Search ‘powerline’

Google is set to follow Microsoft where health and medical records are concerned, with a target date of early next year slated for Google Health to roll out. Since Internet users already use Google as a starting point to look for health and medical information, why not apply Google’s expertise in indexing, searching, and managing vast amount of information? In addition, Google will be able to further ring up the cash registers by targeting the health industry with its Adwords program. Reports have shown that Google aims to bring together health-related search features, health and lifestyle information (like diet and exercise programs), and a localized “find a doctor” feature. Many of these aspects will be free, but you’ll have to fork out a subscription fee for some applications.

The SATA HDD Stage Rack works pretty much like an iPod dock, except that you place a hard drive inside it in place of an iPod. It accepts both 2.5″ and 3.5″ hard drives, and works much better in terms of aesthetics and practicality compared to the many SATA to USB adapter cables that are currently available in the market. A button in front is used to eject drives, while a glowing blue ring indicates that the device is powered while doubling up as a power switch. The base alone retails for $47, while extra weight at the bottom to prevent it from tipping over will set you back by another $38.70 in shipping costs.

You can also customize your order to seat a couple of people should the need arise. The Scooter Desk was designed by Utilia Design.

Alpine has announced the PMD-B200 Blackbird II GPS navigation system that comes with Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in traffic tuner, and an integrated flash drive that is powered by Microsoft’s Windows CE operating system. Not only that, the PMD-B200 comes with 6 million POIs to keep you interested as you travel, while maps from Navteq ensure you will never get lost in the US and Canada, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands (provided you have the latest updates, of course). Live traffic information will set you back by $60 per year, and will probably be essential for those who want to avoid gridlocks as much as possible. Other features include audio playback capability, an SD memory card slot, and an FM modulator. It will retail for $750.
