Web 2.0 Summit: “Kill the NY Times? That would be nice!”

Chris DeWolfe, Rupert Murdoch, John Battelle

Last night, John Battelle interviewed Rupert Murdoch and MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe at the Web 2.0 Summit. Rupert Murdoch said that he wants to improve the recently acquired Wall Street Journal by expanding the paper’s arts, fashion, general and international sections. Then John Battelle suggested that this would mean “killing” the New York Times, “That would be nice!”, the media mogul answered.Chris De Wolfe confirmed rumors that MySpace will open its platform in a couple of months, just like Facebook did. When asked if Google was a “threat or a friend”, Rupert Murdoch stated that Google is a threat to old media, and even if the Google ads revenue is an important one for MySpace “it is not a big chunk”. The conversation was followed by a MySpace party at the SF Museum of Arts where many old and new media celebrities showed up: Rupert Murdoch, Chris DeWolfe, Chad Hurley (YouTube), Jason Calacanis (former Weblogs Inc. CEO), Phil Bronstein (Executive Vice president and Editor, San Francisco Chronicle)

Thomson Gives Up

Thompson Gives Up

…Making media players. Thomson will sell its international audio-video activities to AudioVox and shut down the European ones. You might have seen DVD and MP3 players sold under the RCA brand.

Quite frankly, their products are fairly bad and low-tech (low-margins too). As consumer become more savvy and with increased competition, there was no way that the brand could sustain it activities for long. We hope that Thomson’s employees will  find work in other business units.

Eizo SX3031W-H LCD monitor

Eizo SX3031W-H LCD monitorLooks like 22″ or even 22″ LCD monitors just don’t quite make the cut anymore these days, with 30″ being the target size for many people especially gaming addicts. The Eizo SX3031W-H LCD monitor might share the same size as other offerings from Apple, Dell (read our review), HP, and Gateway, but it doesn’t fare too well in terms of specifications with a rather dismal 14ms refresh rate. While the quoted LCD monitors range between $1,280 and $1,799 in price, the Eizo SX3031W-H LCD monitor is the clear loser with a $2,555 price tag attached to it. No idea who would pick this up considering the rather ordinary specifications and extremely high price, so here’s to seeing a steep discount pretty soon.

Gundam simulator in Japan

Gundam simulator in JapanTrust the Japanese to come up with Senjo No Kizuna, a Gundam simulator at arcades that allows the player to control a mech using dual joysticks and foot pedals. This kinda reminds me of the Mechwarrior franchise, and it would be nice to see the computer experience being translated to the arcade environment. Each of these Gundam simulator pods can seat only one, and boasts a panoramic display as well as network connectivity, allowing players to battle others in adjoining pods or in other arcades in a 5 vs 5 epic battle. You’ll also be issued a Pilot Card that stores all your combat data in order to build up a respectable history, just like those Initial D racing simulators.

Nintendo stops support for NES et al

Nintendo stops support for NES et al While Microsoft has already stopped supporting Windows 98 for quite some time already, you’ll be surprised to know that Nintendo has just pulled the plug where support for the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, and the Gameboy Pocket after all these decades. It is pretty interesting to note that up through last week, it is still possible to send your creaking NES system to Nintendo for a full factory repair. Talk about an amazing level of service that other companies would do well to emulate, where support for legacy devices are crucial to maintaining customer loyalty. Drats, looks like I have to take better care of my monochrome LCD Gameboy from now onwards.

Toshiba circular LCD panel

Toshiba circular LCD panel Come to think of it, how many circular LCD panels have you come across for commercial use? Practically none, which is why Toshiba’s circular LCD panel has created quite a ripple. This display measures 62mm in diameter with an outer border of 3″, and makes living proof that an LCD display can be of any shape instead of a plain old rectangle or square. The specifications ain’t too shabby either, with a 240 x 240 resolution, a brightness level of 500 nits, and a contrast ratio of 600 to 1. Toshiba hopes to push these circular LCDs to the automobile industry and mobile devices, but it remains to be seen when these prototypes will actually enter production. Car dashboards will never be the same again, and you will probably see a round version of the nano next time round.

Zepto Notebook features 600Mbps WiFi-N

Zepto Notebook features 600Mbps WiFi-N

Zepto says that it has the WiFi-N chip in the Zepto notebook will top a theoretical 600Mbps, or 150Mbps in real-life (ideal) conditions - at 25feet. (WiFi-N was originally rated at 100Mbps and it is expected that measured speeds will top 40 or 50Mbps).

The tradeoff comes by sacrificing range for speed. As Trusted Reviews points out, this could benefit users who share a hotspot in a small office. Product page (Not available in the USA)

SanDisk paints Cruzer line anew

SanDisk paints Cruzer line anew SanDisk has decided to be a little bit more adventurous with their Cruzer line of USB flash drives, launching the Colors+ range that will feature ten different shades for you to choose from. I know that USB flash drives aren’t exactly Pokemon so you probably won’t have this innate need to catch ‘em all, but it is always nice to have options when purchasing a product. Gone are the days where the Ford Model T came in only one color - dreary black at that. Which would be your color of choice?
