Sony tries to counter the iPhone, still doesn’t get it

Sony tries to counter the iPhone, still doesn’t get it

According to our friends from electronista, Sony and KDDI (a Japanese wireless carrier) are working on plans. The plan would be for Sony to “open” (allow) MP3 file exchange between Walkman phones and other devices. The iPhone will launch in Asia in 2008.

First, I don’t know if that’s true as electronista doesn’t provide additional quotes or links. However, if it is true, Sony’s efforts are futile: Apple has a one-two punch with a better hardware/software and a popular distribution platform (iTunes) (plus a lot of marketing hype). Sony has little to compete with. So, if the above is the grand plan to stop Apple from flooding Japan with iPhones, it seems… very light.

Google Docs for mobile, read-only

Google Docs for mobile, read-only Google has just launched their Google Docs service for mobile phones. At the moment, it’s read-only, but they are working on it.

We tried it on a Samsung Blackjack and the experience is less than stellar to say the least, especially with the sheets.

The iPhone gets a better user interface, though.

NSA-enabled smart phone

NSA-enabled smart phoneJust like any other government device (have you seen a “military GPS” recently? yuck), it’s big, unattractive and probably very expensive, but this Sectera Edge secure smart phone by General Dynamics can get NSA employees and select contractors on the agency’s ultra-secure network so that they can use the top secret Microsoft Exchange for Spies. Oh, It’s also a regular phone.

Windows Mobile with Projector Concept

Windows Mobile with Projector ConceptStefano Casanova designed this concept phone that would run on Windows Mobile and use a swivel display with an embedded projector, making it less strenuous to read stuff or watch movies on the phone. Of course, now someone would have to pull their hair and actually implement it, using cutting-edge and consumer-priced technologies… it doesn’t cost anything to dream a little, right?

Sony to launch Alpha DSLR-A700

Sony to launch Alpha DSLR-A700 Sony is set to launch its new Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 when November 9 rolls around, bringing forward the original date by a week. This decision was made from purely a marketing point of view, aiming to attract as many customers as possible since other camera manufacturers will also use that time period to launch their own range of new digital SLR models. So that you’ll be in the know, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 comes with a CMOS sensor and packs 12.2 megapixels of goodness, featuring a 3″ LCD display, Super SteadyShot Inside image stabilization, advanced imaging technologies, ultra-responsive operation, and a lightweight, dust- and moisture-resistant, magnesium alloy construction common to enthusiast-class D-SLR cameras. It will retail for approximately $1,538 without a lens, while picking one up with a lens will set you back by $450 more.

External Storage for TiVo Series 3

External Storage for TiVo Series 3

TIVO reportedly released an update (9.2) that allows TiVo Series 3 boxes so support external storage using the external SATA port. This is a much easier path to upgrade that brings real value to customers who don’t want to open the box and do other non-user-friendly things to expand the storage capacity.

Once a compatible hard drive is plugged, just reboot your TiVo and voila! It’s not clear which drives are compatible, but you can head to the tivocommunity.com site and peak around.

Apple SDK in February 2008

Apple SDK in February 2008

Apple has officially given February as a target date for their iPhone SDK.

“Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users.” (Steve)

Steve Jobs also confirmed that the SDK would work for the iPod Touch, which shares the same code with the iPhone.

It remains to be seen how “open” the platform is going to be. As we said in our previous post (“iPhone SDK, open or closed?”), it is possible that applications might need a “green light” from Apple before they can be executed on the iPhone, just like console makers do.

White LED LCD panels from Samsung

White LED LCD panels from SamsungSamsung will be showcasing its new LCD display that derives its backlighting from white LEDs at the Flat Panel Display International show in Yokohama, Japan, next week. This 15.4″ LCD display might look pretty ordinary on the outside, but its innards are teeming with state-of-the-art technology, allowing it to consume 40% less power than screens lit with normal, colored LEDs while boasting a contrast ratio of 10,000 to 1. Not only that, the use of white LED backlighting illuminates only the parts of the screen that actually need it, letting dark areas have their lighting turned off altogether. This new display will enter production in the first half of next year, where it will be available in consumer products during the second half of 2008.

Mr. P. Lamp for laughs

Mr. P. Lamp for laughs Now isn’t he cute? The Mr. P. Lamp is turned on and off using the protruding knob as depicted in the photo, where his head acts as the light source. Each $110 purchase comes with a removable lampshade, alllowing you to spare him from being embarrassed due to his extremely tiny size. This would make a great housewarming gift, and it will definitely elicit more than a laugh from whoever lay their eyes on it. Brings a whole new meaning to flipping a switch on, eh?

Philips Streamium WAC3500D

Philips Streamium WAC3500DThe Philips Streamium WAC3500D is a wireless stereo system that works great if you’re a fan of dedicated audio streaming 24/7. It boasts the capability to playback MP3s from virtually all music sources, including USB storage devices, CDs, PCs, and iPods. You can perform the latter via wired or WiFi connections as long as there is a compatible iPod dock for you to work with. The Philips Streamium WAC3500D comes with a power-efficient 80W digital amplifier, FM radio, 80GB hard drive and CD-ripping function. No idea on pricing or availability, but I must say it looks pretty sweet to have in any home.
