Honda robotics used for rehab

Honda robotic tech used for rehab

Using technologies developed during the design of ASIMO (honda’s humanoid robot), this device can learn how the user walks and assist with its electric motors. We have no word on how effective this is, but this is an interesting idea. Honda did not comment on their commercialization plans, if any.

Note that in ASIMO, the most difficult part is the balance in relation to the walking. (Photos from robonable)

Hitachi announced 4TB HDDs by 2011. So?

Hitachi announced 4TB HDDs by 2011. So?

Shocker: Hitachi says that storage capacity will continue to grow the way it has been growing until now, doubling every two years. What’s the news? Not much. Although there is a risk that hard drives will reach a storage-per-square-inch limit at some point, Hitachi seemed in the mood to share their relief that (they think that) they have secured the technology that will keep them in the race. It’s also a way create the perception that they are the leader.

“Hitachi continues to invest in deep research for the advancement of hard disk drives as we believe there is no other technology capable of providing the hard drive’s high-capacity, low-cost value for the foreseeable future,” (Hiroaki Odawara, Hitachi Research Director).

He’s probably right, flash isn’t going to overtake drives’ capacity anytime soon, but really, that’s not news either.

New, cheap, 65″ 1080p Olevia HDTVs

New, cheap, large-screen 1080p Olevia HDTVs

If you’ve been shopping for LCD TVs in the past couple of years, you might have seen the Olevia brand, especially for 27” models. The Olevia line-up will now feature a 65” model sold for $7000 (that’s a little steep, given that one can find a Sharp Aquos 65” LCD TV for $6500 online). Let’s wait and see what the street price of the Olevia 65” will be.

I have not experienced the image quality of the Olevia 265TFHD 65” LCE TV yet, but I did find previous 37” models to have poor image quality and user interface. Try to check it out at a store, and bring your own DVD, with a dark movie to check on the black tones, contrast and luminosity. Stores often sow movies like “Nemo” where saturated colors make it hard to judge image quality.

W-100 watch phone

W-100 watch phone Looks like we have yet another watch phone in the form of the W-100 from Hyundai. While it is a whole lot smaller compared to standard cellphones, the W-100 certainly doesn’t lack in features (although you’ll probably miss a decent sized screen sorely if you’re a seasoned cellphone user). This GSM handset, if you can call it that, comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera that captures video as well, an MP3 and video player, a touchscreen interface (happy squinting!), Bluetooth connectivity, and a microSD memory card slot. Best of all is, you get support for the English language other than the customary Chinese language that comes as default.

Nokia introduces 2135 cellphone

Nokia introduces 2135 cellphone Nokia has just released the Nokia 2135 cellphone that targets the entry-level market, bringing a 400-entry phonebook, 3.5 hours of talktime and 11 days of standby time. It will feature large easy to read keys as well as the familiar Nokia user interface that is a no-brainer to use. Meant to be an extremely simple handset, it comes with a carefully selected set of features that add to the utility of the Nokia 2135 without adding any unneeded complexity. An integrated speakerphone, user-assignable ringtones, a built in calendar, and an integrated voice recorder rounds off the list of features. No word on pricing is available at the moment, but the Nokia 2135 is tipped for a fall release in North America.

Google to double GMail capacity

Google to double GMail capacityGoogle used to be the king of the hill where email storage is concerned, but apparently it has been relegated to third place, falling behind Yahoo! and Hotmail. The company that vows to do no evil is not about to take things lightly though, with plans to introduce incremental increases in the near future. It will bring all accounts up to 4321MB from October 23 onwards, and by January 4th next year, all GMail users will have 6GB of storage space online. Google Apps mail accounts will also see the 2GB storage cap removed and aligned with standard GMail accounts. If you’re a GMail user, just how much space do you have left?

LG.Philips a-Si TFT LCD panel

LG.Philips a-Si TFT LCD panelLG.Philips has just developed a 2.4″ a-Si TFT LCD display complete with the thinnest border in the world, hoping that this invention will be put to use in cellphones sometime down the road. The borders on both left and right sides of this 2.4″ QVGA LCD panel measure a mere 1mm each, making it approximately half the thickness than most other current a-Si TFT LCD panels being produced. This new display is based on LG.Philips LCD’s Narrow Bezel Technology, integrating the driver IC onto the LCD panel using Gate in Panel technology (GIP) to ensure that narrow-border panels are equal in quality and reliability to their wider counterparts. Mass production will being next year, and this technology can be expected to be seen in the rest of its slim border products.

16GB iPhone in the works - hoax

16GB iPhone in the works? There’s a leaked photo from someone who claims to be an AppleStore employee, and he/she has duly supplied the customary grainy leaked photo of a 16GB iPhone. Currently, there is no way to verify the authenticity of this photo, so this rumor will just have to be taken with a grain of salt until an official announcement is released from Apple. Word has it this updated 16GB iPhone will be released next Tuesday, and if the news is true, how much do you think it will cost?

PS: what about a “leak” with a clear picture for a change? That would be “breaking news”

Update: A reader, _Jon, has told us that this is a hoax – the blurryness was here to hide the photoshop job.
