Hum let me look in the future… Microsoft is going to come out with a Windows Modile “Touch Interface”. Oh wait a minute, I wasn’t looking in the future, but simply at these images and at the patent office website. People are already calling it the ZunePhone, although it sounds ridiculous. Oh well, sometimes, it’s better to copy something that works than invent something that doesn’t.

The Nikkei Business Daily (via IGN) reports that unnamed developers are very concerned about sales prospects for their games for two reasons: 1/ only Nintendo seems to be able to make games that sell on the Wii. 2/ Wii sales have slowed down, casting concerns for long-term market share dominance.
#1/ This isn’t new. Nintendo has always been the best software developer for their own platform because they have a mix of talent and first-hand information (as the hardware, documents and development kits creators), which is critical for the first generation of games. It might just be a little worse this time around. When I saw this in IGN:
“Several developers claim that Nintendo has been the only beneficiary of Wii’s success as it was able to predict demand for the console, while other publishers were forced to catch up quickly producing titles - some of which ended up as flops.”
It sounded to me like developers who rushed to make crappy games because they didn’t believe in the console in the first place, while Nintendo was focusing on making fun games. So, yes that would a recipe for flops, so what do they complain about? Nintendo’s president said in 2005 that the Wii (then called Revolution) would be “hard on developers”. That was a fair warning.

The void left by Creative’s decision of stopping the production of the VISION:M will be quickly filled, it seems: a slightly smaller clone has appeared… in China, of course.
As it is the case with many clones, it is only a superficial copy, don’t expect any of the VISION:M user interface to be present. This player can do the basics, though: 1.8” TFT (vs. 2.5” for the original), support for the popular video and audio formats (avi, mpg, mov, mp3, wma, wav, FM tuner, USB 2.0.
Obviously, the main argument for clones is how cheap they are: 2GB for $40, 12 units minimum order – Yikes!

Nissan’s Around View Monitor creates a bird’s eye view of the car’s surrounding by analyzing images form four different 180-degrees cameras placed on all sides of the vehicle. This is really cool because it lets the driver maneuver with a lot more accuracy… and confidence. The system will debut in Japan with the Nissan Elgrand but should arrive in the USA in the Infinity EX35. There’s no doubt that eventually, such systems will be more common.

If you live in California, you should start looking for a hands-free solution (because soon, it will the only legal way to be on a phone the the car) and the Sony Ericsson HCB-105 looks like a hassle-free one. Thanks to its clip, there’s no installation and the device is controlled with (only) two buttons. The downside is that you’ll have to charge it from time to time, although talk time is rated (by the manufacturer) at 25 hours and stand by time can be as long as 700 hours. I don’t know how good it is, but it is surely worth looking at. If you really want something slick, check Microsoft’s Sync.

That’s what DAPReview noticed and we have to agree. If you recall, Toshiba is a very close partner of Microsoft and it even designed the first Zune. It’s not clear how much involvement Toshiba had in Zune 2, but side-by-side images suggest that the devices look like cousins. The solution is to crack a few open and take a look inside. We’ll keep an eye on the subject. Zune web site.

Just when you thought that GPS was meant to get you from point A to point B in the shortest time possible, along comes the MiniAture Robot for Surgical Applications (MARS) that has already received FDA approval for orthopedic and spinal surgery. It is now equipped with GPS accuracy for keyhole neurosurgery by Israeli scientists, allowing it to keyhole drilling and insertion of a needle or probe based on predefined entry point and target locations in a preoperative CT/MRI image. It would be nice to know that this will be more accurate than your ordinary GPS device though, as it is brains that are being operated on here. Man, I’ll never look at another GPS-enabled device the same way ever again.

ViewSonic will be releasing the VX1940w LCD monitor later next month, and this unit will carry the honor of being the first widescreen 19″ LCD display in the world that combines 1,680 x 1,050 super high resolution with an ultra-fast response time of 2ms (gray-to-gray) as well as a dynamic contrast ratio of 3,000 to 1. It targets gaming and multimedia enthusiasts with its performance figures, although those working at the office will definitely appreciate its desktop real estate. The ViewSonic VX1940w will come with a D-Sub connector, a DVI-D connector, and a 3.5mm headphone jack - it would’ve been nice to see ViewSonic throw in a couple of USB 2.0 ports though. Viewing angles are above average (H170°/V160°) while brightness of 300 nits makes it perfect for gaming, viewing DVDs, and working on standard PC applications.

If you’re one who moves like an elephant in the home, then the concept Ceramic Remote is not for you. Since its name reveals the material this remote is made out of, you can be sure that extra caution will be taken whenever it is used. The more care you take of the Ceramic Remote, the lower the chances of you losing it, which is the main thrust of this idea. Although in a strange way, the Ceramic Remote does help instill some sense of responsibility but chances are not many people (or maybe none) will purchase a fragile remote such as this since it will be frequently used and run the risk of being broken like Humpty Dumpty in the presence of children.

Forget about lithium-ion batteries - 2010 could be the year that heralds water-powered cellphones. Samsung has successfully developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that is powered by just water alone. Apparently the water and metal in the handset will react whenever it is turned on, producing hydrogen gas that is then supplied to the fuel cell where another reaction with oxygen in the air will generate power. This negates the need for methanol to produce hydrogen, which is the common route other fuel cells take whereas Samsung’s version requires nothing but water. Each micro-fuel cell can generate up to three watts of electricity, making it suitable for use in small, mobile devices for up to 10 hours.
