Internet2 at 100Gbps
October 11th, 2007
It looks like Internet2* has been getting a 10X boost. The boost affects “network capacity”, or how much traffic the network can handle, not the speed of individual connections. This has been made possible by using 10 colors (or wavelength) to transmit data as light over fiber-optics. Previously a single color was used. Yes, that sounds like “Duh, what didn’t they do that before?”, but I’m sure that the implementation is a nightmare. The fastest consumer internet connection that we know of reaches 100 mbps.
*Internet2 is a network run by Level-3 communications and is not accessible to the public. It is used to connect researchers and universities.
