Mac OS X Leopard goes “gold”

Mac OS X Leopard goes “gold”

Apple Insider is reporting that Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has been finalized (in the software industry, it is sometimes called “going gold” because the master disc has to be created before duplication). So far the world is expecting a public release during the last week of this month. More OS X Leopard stories

QWERTY Rumor by LG

QWERTY Rumor by LG

Sprint has been teasing us with their new QWERTY 3G phone, but besides the photo, Sprint is tight-lipped about the device – that’s part of the maketing ploy.

Anyhow, here’s our best guess: we think that this is not a Windows Mobile device and that it will rather be the Sprint equivalent to the Verizon LG Envy. It will have a somewhat proprietary OS and user interface, which most likely, will suck – although I hope that I’m wrong. As the poster says, it’s a 3G device.

Samsung first to build 800×480, 3.08” OLED panels

Samsung first to build 800x480 3.08” panels

Samsung SDI has announced today that they expect to be the first company to develop a wVGA (800×480 pixels) OLED display aimed at mobile devices. That is far superior to today’s 320×240 OLED screens. OLED has many very desirable properties: manufacturers can build thinner, power-efficient displays with a better image quality. The only downside is how difficult the manufacturing process is.

Higher resolutions and better battery life can transform how mobile devices are used by making web application usable and improving productivity tasks such as email and document editing. More OLED stories

Tasers deemed “safe” by study

Tasers deemed “safe” by study

Researchers from Wake Forest University conducted this study and looked at data from about 1000 cases to find that in only three instances the recipient had suffered injuries, two of which from falling after being electrocuted. In the third instance the investigation could not draw a relationship between the taser and the injury. According to the report, most cases resulted in no injuries and most injuries are minor (cuts, contusions), although it is clearly mentioned that that tasers are weapons that can cause serious injury or death. The question is: does the risk outweigh the “benefits” of the device? If one tells me that a taser can often replace a firearm - sure, but the debate is far from over. What’s your take? Philips SA9345 portable media player

Philips SA9345 portable media playerPhilips ignites some spark into the portable media player market with the SA9345. Frankly, I would’ve preferred a more memorable name as a combination of numbers and letters just don’t quite make the cut. Then again, never judge a PMP by its model name, so let’s take a look at what the SA9345 has on offer. It comes in 2GB and 4GB variants, sharing the same 1.8″ color display, touch sensitive controls, MP3, WMA, and WMV file support, and an integrated FM radio, all crammed into a body that measures no more than 0.3″ thick. The 4GB model is said to play up to 20 hours of continuous audio and one tenth of that for video. The 2GB and 4GB models will retail for £99 ($202) and £129 ($264) respectively in the UK.

SPhone clone is expensive

SPhone clone is expensiveiPhone clones have already been making an appearance in the market, but the SPhone is one that you definitely would want to avoid. It retails for approximately $122 and comes permanently locked since it is made out of paper. The main reason? So that you can burn this for the deceased to receive it in the underworld. I wonder if you’ll need to burn a power outlet or something, along with the base station so that the SPhone will have steady reception in the very depths of hell itself.

Optimus Maximus clears FCC hurdle

Optimus Maximus clears FCC hurdleThose who are still holding out for the Optimus Maximus keyboard from Art Lebedev Studio are definitely long suffering folk, but their agony will soon come to an end as the keyboard has already been approved by the FCC. Here’s a revelation - the Optimus Maximus keyboard will come with 512MB of on-board memory and a 150x SD memory card that stores all the icons which will appear on individual keys’ OLED display each time the user changes programs as well as keyboard layouts. These SD cards can be exchanged if there is a need to swap layout sets between computers. The $1,564 price tag still stays though, and chances are this will be but a flop considering the high entry price.

Samsung SGH-i617 info on the FCC – another BlackJack?

Samsung SGH-i617 info on the FCC – another BlackJack?

A little info is better than no info, but from this image found on the FCC website and from the name, we can guess that this might be a variant of the Blackjack (SGH-i60x). If so, it would be a Windows Mobile Smartphone. The Samsung i617 will support HSDPA and is capable of worldwide roaming, which means that it’ll be a tri or quad-band GSM device.

MTube prototype on displayThe MTube is but a prototype mobile TV device that comes with built-in cellphone functionality, or is it the other way round? It boasts a generous fullscreen display that will definitely sit down well with most people, boasting WiMAX as well as Ethernet connectivity for extra bite, a 2.8″ touchscreen display, 8GB of internal memory, and a 1GHz Via processor. Not only that, the MTube is endowed with video and audio processing functions, powered by a Linux-based operating system. If this ever comes out within the next six months, chances are it will eat into iPhone sales due to its versatility.
