The small Korean DAP, the Cowan D2, is being updated with at TV tuner called “1Seg TV Tuner” (Seg1 is a mobile TV service in Japan). Other than this, the D2TV is the same device as the original D2. It too is available in 2 GB, 4 GB, or 8 GB and has a 2.5″ touch screen, an SD slot, and a light weight of only 91g. Does mobile TV make the D2 more attractive to you, or do you don’t care that much about mobile TV?

SpotScent, a device being developed by car company Subaru, is an air cannon that sprays fragrances at drivers as you travel. The device uses two air cannons to deliver a stream of a custom smell, aimed directly at the head. You might ask yourself “whats the point of SpotScent if I can just get an air freshener?” It looks like some people just don’t like the same scents, it is very much like a room-temperature problem, but with odors.
SpotScent comes with an assortment of smells that can be customized based on who’s driving. No date has been announced by Suburu for when this will be on the market.

Altec is best known for some of their iPod speaker systems from the past, though this one is made specifically for the Zune. The portable iM414 InMotion Zune speaker system is listed as “coming soon” on the Alterac product page and promises crystal clear sound with Zune specific features. The iM414 will also act as a dock for your Zune, charging it as you listen to your tunes.
The device is both usable with AC power or batteries, offering up to 24 hours of playtime. Price should be around $100, yet this is still unconfirmed.

Craig Venter, the controversial DNA researcher involved in the race to decipher the human genetic code, has built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is poised to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on Earth. The DNA sequence is based on the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium which the team pared down to the bare essentials needed to support life, removing a fifth of its genetic make-up. The wholly synthetically reconstructed chromosome, which the team have christened Mycoplasma laboratorium, has been watermarked with inks for easy recognition. It is then transplanted into a living bacterial cell and in the final stage of the process it is expected to take control of the cell and in effect become a new life form. The team of scientists has already successfully transplanted the genome of one type of bacterium into the cell of another, effectively changing the cell’s species. Mr Venter said he was “100% confident” the same technique would work for the artificially created chromosome.http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/oct/06/genetics.climatechangeSource: Engadget

Sources are reporting that the iPhone Dev guys have made a preliminary jailbreak of the new iPhone firmware v. 1.1.1. Since the new upgrade, most third-party applications have been made useless since the former jailbreak system was extinguished. While there doesn’t seem to be any clues on when we can see some software for freeing iPhones (again) just yet, this is a big step towards getting iPhones back under our control.

Vcom3D has taken the humble iPod and fused it with a bunch of Arabic and Kurdish phrases to create a makeshift language translator that is currently being used by approximately 160 troops in Iraq. This iPod boast different “playlists” that cater for various scenarios, featuring relevant phrases in the MP3s themselves. You also get on-screen Arabic and English text forms, along with a phonetic version of Arabic phrases. Each package comes bundled with a sturdy armband case and a speaker attached further up the arm for one hand operation. Nothing really gets the message across hostile targets like the sweet sound of an M-16 rifle, but then again there are situations where you need to get the ordinary folk out of the way before being trigger happy.

Here’s a glimpse into the future with the Interactive Media Wall by Perceptive Pixel. It measures 8′ x 3′ and is actually the electronic version of a canvas. It uses a touch sensitive surface to allow users to navigate, locate, and manipulate information - sounds somewhat like the scenes in the Matrix and the Minority Report. Unfortunately for many, the Interactive Media Wall retails for $100,000 from Nieman Marcus so there’s still a long road to go before you actually have the dough to bring one of these babies home. Hopefully Microsoft’s Surface technology will be much more affordable for the layman.

The Walkie Bit Robot Turtle is no pizza-lovin’ hero in a half shell, but it does feature a rather unique feature - depending on how you tap its shell, it will move in a certain rhythm. These rhythms can be learnt, but the turtle has enough memory to store a maximum of 15 beats per rhythm so that it won’t overdo itself and keel over. Get two of the Walkie Bit Robot Turtle in order to race them - I wonder if the type of battery used has any part to play in the final outcome. Choose from blue or red colors, with prices starting from $17.99 apiece.
