Starting today, Yahoo! OneSearch will feature Yahoo Answers and most importantly WikiPedia in the search results. I know a lot of people who search directly on WikiPedia, so having the results directly without having to type the site URL will probably please them (Example: search for “digital signal” and you should see links to WikiPedia). Readers who are from outside the U.S.A can check if their country is one of the 18+ where OneSeach provides local results.
That’s not all: Yahoo also added flight status information. For example, if you search for “UAL 90” or “United Airline 90” you should get the flight status of that particular flight. It’s a good idea, most flight status sites are not mobile friendly at all. Try it at us.m.yahoo.com (from your desktop or your mobile)

LG has shown a new home theater system called HT972TR (horrible name) that looks seemingly like their “chocolate” line of cellphones. The front feature a tactile interface and it is designed with a shiny black. Oh and it has some technical merits too: 1080p upscaling and reads DivX videos in addition of most popular digital file formats from any CD/DVD based media. Finally, the sound has to come out somewhere and it does it (theoretically) in style with “Virtual Sound Matrix”, LG’s surround sound. Let’s hope that it performs as well as it looks.

Our friends from gearfuse have alerted us that Microsoft has apparently posted Internet Explorer unintentionally on their website. Users have been able to download and install the application earlier today although the release is scheduled to be in 2008. As soon as Microsoft noticed, they’ve taken the download down and issued an apology.

You don’t need to be a Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to have cool gadgets that can look at inaccessible spots. This Rigid Snake Micro is a camera with a flexible optic that displays the image on a 2.4” LCD screen. There are different hooks with useful accessories like mirrors and magnets. Check your tool store or head to the internet to get one. It would have been more fun if they had called it “Solid Snake Micro”.

Apple wants to go beyond the binary touch that equips most touch screen today by not only detecting “if” the screen was touched, but also which “how much force” they were touched, opening the doors to future potential user interface improvement. It works by having a few extra layers, one of which can bend and tell how much pressure was applied to the surface. Something similar might be used in graphics tablet, but I never destroyed one to verify. If someone knows, please post a comment.

The word on the street was on the spot on this upcoming 40GB Playstation 3. Sony Europe has just announced it: “We have a brand new 40 GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next-generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price.” (David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe - SCEE).
Just yesterday Sony said that no press conference was scheduled for next week, dashing the hopes of millions – but they were right! the announcement wasn’t for next week, it was for today. Anyhow, most consumer electronics companies should change the way they handle public relations (PR). I mean one they stuff the channels with a new model they know that the information will leak, so why not handle it properly? It’s obvious that even based on rumors, customers will wait for the cheaper model.

I really dislike having to install speakers all over the place to have surround sound and that’s why the Yamaha YSP line of digital sound “projectors” seems so cool (although I never actually owned one). Yamaha has a new model called YSP-500 that is roughly half the size of previous ones – At $650, it is also less expensive.
In theory, the YSP can “analyze” your room and then adapt its many internal speakers to bounce the sound to create a very good surround sound. Not everyone lives in an empty box like me, so beware: if you have lots of “sound obstacles” of weirdly shaped walls that might be a problem.

After a few controversial moment in the media (feasible? too expensive? not enough software?), the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) has been fielded. In this instance it’s in Nigeria and while it is a little too early to measure the success of this initiative, it is good to see tech put to good use. Keep in mind that this story comes from the official OLPC blog and although this won’t put an end to ongoing discussions (mainly: “is it the best platform for the job”?), the controversy can probably be put to rest for today. It’s official, Microsoft has announced that Bungie the company behind the HALO franchise will be spun off to be a (more?) independent entity. Microsoft will keep significant interests in the company of course. Without first-hand insider information, it’s hard to tell what really happened, but my sources tell me that it is possible that Bungie wants to develop games for other platforms as well, or it is possible that Bungie would prefer to keep its own corporate culture. In the meantime, HALO has grossed about 300M and has spurred sales of Xbox 360 consoles and subscriptions to Xbox Live. That’s another proof that in the console space, it’s all about the games – not the specs.

Spaninsh electronics company, Energy Sistem presents their Inngenio 3500 MDP M-EX, a large screened flash-based media player. The 2.4-inch QVGA LCD display is a pretty large size for such a small device. The 3500 features 4 GB of on-board storage, though this figure is extensible with its addition of a microSD slot, a feature not typically seen out of the mobile market. The device also allows you to record your voice and FM radio, which the device can also features. The 3500 will be available for around $157.
