Hitachi HDTV goes to the slim house

Hitachi HDTV goes to the slim house

Hitachi aims to have a say in the slim HDTV bandwagon by releasing their new 32″ display that measures 0.74″ thick - that’s 18.8mm for you, which is roughly six times thicker than Sony’s 11″ display. At that thickness, it makes even the present LCD TVs and plasma displays look absolutely obese. Unfortunately, even if you have a healthy bank account balance at this point in time, you won’t be able to lay your hands on these puppies since they’ll only go into production and hit store shelves in 2009. Of course, if you can hold out even longer, these ought to be the common standard in 2011 - that is, if the whole world has not plunged into a post-nuclear apocalypse.

Toyota has new fuel-cell SUV

Toyota has new fuel-cell SUV

Most people frown upon the use of SUVs in getting around, but Toyota has just the tonic for those who hate gas guzzlers in the form of the new fuel-cell driven Highlander SUV. Tests have shown that it is capable of making a 350 mile journey from Osaka to Tokyo on a single tank without having to be refueled along the way. In fact, the Highlander actually went on for another 200 miles before it could not move another inch, and all these were made possible by increasing fuel efficiency, upgrading the power-control system and doubling the tank’s capacity. This feat was achieved with an average speed of 50mph and having turned on the air-condition. Roll out more of such vehicles for the consumer markets please…

40GB PS3 more or less confirmed

40GB PS3 more or less confirmedWhile Sony has not confirmed nor denied the existence of a 40GB PS3, there is an image of such a console in existence as it was advertised in a French gaming catalogue. Unfortunately, further intrigue is in order as the person who captured this photo obviously had a lousy cameraphone or his/her hands were just too shaky to be able to snap a steady shot. Hence, we aren’t able to make out the technical details of this upcoming PS3 even with the best Photoshop filters and sharpening tools applied. What’s interesting is the 449 Euro price point that translates to approximately £315 - a vast improvement over the current £425 retail price. Hopefully it will come with an HDMI cable and an extra controller lest users be given a gimped option.

NTT DoCoMo to communicate via your body and Cell tech in a notebook

NTT DoCoMo to communicate via your body and Cell tech in a notebook

CEATEC - At a time when some consumers are still concerned about the effect of radio waves from mobile phones on the human brain, NTT DoCoMo and component manufacturer Alps Electric have decided to use CEATEC JAPAN 2007 to show off prototypes of a mobile phone and a communications module which actually depend on the human body as a communications media. Currently capable of 40 kpbs, one of the demos showed music being transferred from a mobile phone to a headset via the body. One proposed usage model is transferring information such as contact info when two people touch each other. An immediate reaction is “ewww, gross,” but humans should come up with all sorts of interesting ways to use this tech. NTT DoCoMo is also showing for the first time its new “Super 3G” mobile phone communications system which is aiming for 300 Mbps and completion by 2010.

One recent CEATEC tradition is some demonstration of a consumer application of the Cell Broadband Engine technology beyond the PS3. This year, Toshiba is showing off its new Spurs Engine “media processor” based on the Cell tech. Mounted in a notebook, the demo application uses facial recognition technology to animate changes to a face in real time. [CEATEC coverage by NikkeiBP's Tech On!]

WiiConnect for S60 phones

WiiConnect for S60 phonesThe Wii is beginning to look more and more flexible with user hacks, and the WiiConnect is the latest in a long line. This Bluetooth driver for S60 handsets allow you to play games on your cellphone with the Wii Remote, providing you with portable fun without having to fork out a fortune. All you need to do is activate Bluetooth on your S60-powered handset and you’re good to go. The game in question is WiiRider, a motorcycle game that requires you to hold the Wii Remote just like the handlebar of an actual motorcycle. Turning the controller simulates the throttle, while moving left and right requires more movement in the right direction without the need to press even a single button. You can download Wiirider here.

Battery lasts for 30 years

Battery lasts for 30 yearsEver wished your laptop battery would never run out? Well that could be a very real possibility in the near future with a new betavoltaic power cell battery which could last for up to 30 years on a single charge. Betavoltaics actually generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material, using beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This will make the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell where electrons scatter out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and into the circuit creating a usable electric current. These cells are fully inert and non-toxic when they run out of juice, so no worries about any environmental fallouts. I’d take this piece of news with a pinch of salt - after all, such a battery will probably be obsolete before its shelf life runs out.

More on the Zune 2G

More on the Zune 2GMicrosoft head honcho Bill Gates unveiled the new Zune portable media players, software, and online store as well as the new Zune Social beta online community Web site. The new Zune Pad appears on these refreshed Zunes, boasting an innovative touch-sensitive button for navigating on the device, as well as wireless sync, Windows Media Center TV on the go, and new codec support. It is also interesting to note that Microsoft has not forgotten about their 1G Zune owners, making available all the new Zune’s features on the old one as well without having to fork out a cent. Apple could take a leaf out of Microsoft’s book by seeing how this software company takes care of its customers. All the original Zune accessories will also work just fine with the new Zunes, whether they are flash-based or not.
