We don’t know how many more objects can possibly be turned into a USB gadget, but the madness just never ends. The aptly named Memlite, a flash drive / lighter mash-up creation, might not be very practical since mixing fire and sensitive hardware is usually not a good idea.
Memlite is available in various storage sizes, starting with a 512 MB model (approx. $25) all the way up to 4 GB (approx. $75). It probably isn’t very smart plugging a gadget filled with lighter fluid into a electronic device and its definitely not a good idea to have the lighter lit when plugged in, but hey, its your limbs.

As the organizers of CEATEC JAPAN 2007 look forward to an ever growing show with an expected 200,000 visitors to crowd into all the halls at the Makuhari Messe convention center outside of Tokyo, Japanese manufacturers continue to roll out thin flat panel displays. In today’s battle we have two manufacturers pushing two similarly sized displays into the fray, a 12.1 inch model at 2.88 mm width from Sharp and an 11 inch model at 3 mm from Sony. The big difference between the two is Sharp continues to use LCD technology while Sony is pushing OLED. With a long history in LCD, Sharp continues to evangelize the future of the technology. However, Sony is claiming a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with a ship date of Dec. 1, 2007 at a price of 200,000 yen ($1,734 US), while Sharp claims only 2000:1 while not releasing a ship date or pricing.
Still, at CEATEC it’s not only TVs that are getting the slim down treatment. Japanese part manufacturers are also showing parts which could reduce the size of mobile phones. Toshiba is showing off a “Chip Scale Camera Module” (used along with a CMOS image sensor) 64% smaller in volume then the last gen. Kyocera is also displaying a SAW filter with a smaller footprint.

Who would’ve thought that a sporting giant such as Prince would also enter the Nintendo Wii fray by coming up with racket add-ons? The next time you pick up Wii Sports Tennis, why not play it with more realism by attaching these add-ons from Prince? They might be slightly smaller than the real thing, but at the very least it is aesthetically pleasing compared to the Wii Sports Pack that consists of nothing but cheap plastic. Just remember to keep all your fragile items away, and please try to avoid overhead swings with this lest you end up breaking a light or something. This Prince add-on will set you back by a mere $15, making it a gift idea for Wii owners.

The IVDR Consortium is currently working on new technologies and prototypes that aim to turn hard drives into portable storage devices. IVDR (information versatile disk for removable usage) hopes to bring about the day where you can stick a 2.5″ drive in a stylish case into a kiosk, and download a movie, or even let you record some footage the moment you plop it into a video camera. There are over 50 companies that form the IVDR Consortium, and among the include Hitachi and Toshiba who are already selling branded drives that use this feature. Hopefully the data within the hard drive won’t get corrupted with all the traveling it does in the IVDR environment. Do you think this idea will catch on?

New York City isn’t the criminal infested city it used to be, but road rage and altogether aggressive driving is still a major problem in The Big Apple. The NYPD is currently testing out a new camera system that can read license plate numbers and then transmit the information to search for a match (London has been using something similar for a long time). This could also work wonders with car theft. The first camera post lies a few blocks away from Ground Zero and shows that NYC is serious about getting a high-tech law enforcement ring in the works.

The PDVD8088 portable TV and console from Shenzen Aude piles on the retro mood, featuring an analog TV receiver as well as a built-in NES emulator that relives your glory days in the 8-bit home console. Should you run out of analog TV channels to watch, there is always the integrated controller to help you rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser. Features include a relatively large 8.4″ TFT display with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. It is capable of DVD playback and supports MPEG4 and MP3 file formats. A USB port and an FM receiver round off the list of specifications. Guess China’s slowly but surely catching up on the technological curve…

The Toshiba Gigabeat DAP prototype that is currently on aprade at CEATEC Japan 2007 boasts a brilliant 3.2″ OLED WQVGA display that looks absolutely stunning. 3.2″ in a widescreen format will definitely go a long way in making this a traveler’s favorite where portable entertainment is concerned. No idea on when this prototype is scheduled for mass production though, but sooner is always better in this case. Don’t you think it looks absolutely lovely? Do you think the final product will have what it takes to cause a notable chink in the iPod’s armor?

Who knew that the X-Wing and its S-foils are actually capable of flight in the real world? Well, Andy Woerner and his friends certainly think so and will prove it using a quartet of solid-fuel rocket engines as well as radio-controlled moving wings. Looking at this brings a warm feeling to my heart, and makes me wanna shout “S-foils in attack position!” just before Andy blasts off.
The wings, including the root sections and the outer panels are about 8′ long and weigh 60 pounds a piece, including the motors. The motion mechanism had to be able to move all four of these simultaneously, while keeping them in position relative to each other. Additionally, the motion hardware had to be strong enough to keep the wings in position once they were at the extents of their travel.
