Pioneer goes universal with DV-800AV

Pioneer goes universal with DV-800AV

Pioneer tells the world that there is still life yet in the standard DVD format, releasing the DV-800AV universal DVD player that features 1080p upscaling via HDMI and compatibility with DivX, XviD, and SACD (Super Audio CD) formats. Unfortunately, the €430 price tag is rather on the high side - you could get a perfectly working HD DVD or Blu-ray player at that price point, which makes me wonder why would you then pick this up?

Vertu rolls out new Ferrari phone

Vertu rolls out new Ferrari phoneIn conjunction of Ferrari’s 60th birthday, Nokia’s Vertu luxury unit will unleash a new designer phone that retails for a cool $25,000. This ridiculously expensive handset will be known as the Ferrari Ascent 60 and is currently on sale at Vertu’s flagship stores in London, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Paris. What you get in return for all that truckload of money is tri-band GSM connectivity, Bluetooth support, a 20mm handsfree loudspeaker, USB synchronization, text message support, and a 1,000 name address book. Sounds pretty entry-level by all means, but you go benefit from custom Ferrari ringtones and a screensaver featuring Ferrari graphics. The sapphire crystal display and precision-engineered steel keys on jeweled bearings add to the final price, and the same goes for its hand-polished titanium case, hand-stitched Ferrari leather on the back, and a battery plate that in reality is a 1:100 replica of a Ferrari manual shift grid.

IceRage Pocket Mouse & Pocket Presenter

IceRage Pocket Mouse & Pocket Presenter

IceRage has just released a couple of new computer peripherals that don’t bring anything new in terms of functionality, but they sure as heck look good. The devices in question are the IceRage Pocket Mouse and Pocket Presenter that feature sleek styling cues and a wide range of color options to choose from. The Pocket Presenter will definitely pep up those boring PowerPoint presentations, being a Bluetooth mouse that boasts media controller and laser pointer functionalities. For those who need a flashy looking mouse, the Pocket Mouse would slip comfortably into any pocket and comes with a storage compartment that lets you store its retractable USB cable and plug neatly. Both are working concepts at this point in time - hopefully the final product will be released in time for the holidays.

HTC Phoebus hits the FCC

HTC Phoebus hits the FCC

There is a new device from HTC to appear on the FCC website, and a quick glance at the specifications reveal a GSM 850/1900 device that comes with a 2 megapixel camera. No full frontal shots of the Phoebus though, so we’ll just have to make do with an image of its rear end. From the looks of it though, it does share some similarities with the Dopod C750, and could possibly be the Juno from T-Mobile. What do you guys think this would be?

Smartphone used as a wireless webcam

Smartphone used as a wireless webcam

Here’s one more way to use your smartphone - turn it into a webcam! SmartCam is an open-source application that runs on Windows XP or Vista, enabling any S60-powered handset’s camera to double up as a webcam. Unfortunately, Mac users are left out in the cold again with this open-source solution, but you can always comfort yourself that Macs already come with integrated iSight webcams. Still, to know that you can have a handy webcam on-the-spot without forking out additional dollars is always a boon. Before you get started though, remember to install the SmartCam application onto your Windows machine followed by the mobile client on the S60 device. Oh yeah, and it requires Bluetooth connectivity to link up - cables just won’t do these days.

iPhone gets new attachments support

iPhone gets new attachments supportIt is nice to see more and more functionalities start to appear on the iPhone, and today we bring you news that this supposed wonder handset will be able to play both MP3 and .wav attachments in their voicemail now. Strange though, as other phones surely supported a feature as basic as this the moment they were released. I wonder why simple stuff like this was held back on the iPhone initially?

Broadcom single-chip GPS solution

Broadcom single-chip GPS solutionBroadcom has just announced a new single-chip GPS solution for mobile devices that will be manufactured using the affordable 90nm CMOS process, bringing to the table superior receiver technology as well as tracking sensitivity. This receiver will full utilize the Global Locate architecture that is capable of measuring even the faintest GPS signals (as low as -162 dBm) despite being trapped inside infamous urban canyons. Power consumption is also extremely frugal, sipping no more than 15mW when navigating with one second map updates. Hope to see these new chips make an appearance in future GPS-capable devices soon.
