Truphone brings VoIP to iPhone

Truphone brings VoIP to iPhoneTruphone has just rolled out a demonstration of its VoIP software that runs on the iPhone without requiring a SIM unlock that would void the warranty of your precious as well as make it a candidate for bricking when the next major firmware update is released. This is made possible by executing commands through the terminal, initiating the call from the iPhone via a WiFi connection to Truphone’s servers, and back the same way to the receiving handset. Truphone hopes to see this software being installed across all cellphones that possess the inherent functionality needed to make VoIP calls. It is still in beta, so it’ll be a while before the final polished product is available.

Billion pixel image created

Billion pixel image created

So you go around boasting to others about your 22 megapixel camera and the stunning images that it can take - unfortunately, that megapixel count pales in comparison to the efforts of big-brained researchers at Carnegie Melon University and NASA Ames’ Research Center, who developed an image that contains more than a billion pixels. They found a method to capture multiple images of a single landscape, combining them into one gigantic panoramic photo that you can view in total or zoom all the way into in perfect clarity. All you need is a standard digital camera and a robotics tripod, and you can begin snapping across the entire landscape while stitching them together later. Neat!

Pure white LEDs see advancements

Pure white LEDs see advancementsResearchers at the Indian Institute of Science have laid claim to the advancements made in the realm of white LEDs, claiming that they’re getting ever closer to the “Holy Grail of the illumination industry.” Since white LEDs produce pure white light that works great for everyday use, it would be ideal to have these installed in your home over the “warm white” LEDs used in pricey bulbs. The main advancement involves the development of a “new phosphor from semiconductor nanocrystals of cadmium sulfide mixed with manganese” that will produce a stable and constant shade of white light which is in all manner superior to what is currently available. Until they perfect it, they’ll remain cooped up within their laboratories.

Sliding VoIP mouse

Sliding VoIP mouseWe’ve seen our fair share of VoIP mice in the past, and here’s yet another one that goes against the grain by featuring a slightly modified form factor. It takes after a slider design, opening up to reveal a numeric keypad underneath. Features include a speakerphone while the top of the mouse boasts a backlit LCD display that shows essential information such as contact details, time, and various bits from the chat program. Heck, if you are as poor as a church mouse, you can always save some money on speakers by turning this 800dpi mouse into one but the 1.5 watts of power surely won’t give you any satisfaction at all. For $24.13, you can choose from red, black or silver colors.

Radar Watch tells the time

Radar Watch tells the timeWell, that’s what you’d expect a watch to do, don’t you? This Radar Watch from Eleeno sounds as though it is capable of detecting a bunch of incoming UFOs or something as well though. The interface is almost too simple, with a minute hand on the outside, the hour hand on the inside, and the radar grid dividing the circle into twelve sections. Definitely a timepiece for attention whores. Interested parties will be able to pick one up in Japan for approximately $53 after conversion.

MP3 Device Cloned After Something That Isn’t An iPod

MP3 Device Cloned After Something That Isn't An iPodChinese company Shenzhen Suno Technology is trying to prove a point apparently. Their MA-917 proves the point that not only Apple products are clone worthy. The MA-917 is a PMP device which looks like a Frankenstien of a bunch of Toshiba devices, most notably the Gigabeat. The clone device has a 2-inch TFT display and id compatible with AMV video files, and MP3, WMA and WMV media formats with lyric support, plus adds in a FM tuner for good measure. And yes, digital images can also be displayed.

Gateway still in the game with One PC

Gateway still in the game with One PCGateway might be releasing what they would term their last hurrah in the form of the “One” desktop computer, so-named because of its unified structure. The One desktop comes with an attractive design and is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz processor, a 500GB hard drive, 3GB of memory, a DVD burner, and a 5-in-1 memory card reader. While it retails for $1,800, you can always pick up lesser configurations for $1,300 and $1,500. The One desktop will be officially unveiled at the Digital Life show in New York tomorrow.

Push It Alert: any web content sent to any data-enabled mobile device

Push It Alert: any web content sent to any data-enabled mobile device

DEMO Fall - This one of my favorite services from DEMO. Push It Alerts takes any data from any server (web server, email server) and delivers it to any data-enabled mobile phone, it is carrier agnostic.

For example an entire web page can be sent to your mobile phones in a few seconds and it will perfectly fit the device’s small screen, even the ads are visible and clickable (Yikes!) On the photo, you can see that you have the exact same content on the cell phone and on the computer screen.

This can be used for email as well: you write an email with attached photos and by sending with Push It, it shows instantly on the mobile phone screen, see the second photo.

Global Mobile Technologies launched Push-It Alert at DEMO, but it is not yet available in the market. When integrated to websites, this will let users send content from the sites by simply entering their phone number in a field and click on the Push-It Alert button.

PIP: the mobile stress management game

PIP- stress management game

DEMOFall - I got to try the Personal Input Pod (PIP) gaming gadget that helps people master stress while playing. On the photo you can see that the players are holding the PIP between the fingertips, the device measures their stress level and communicate it to the mobile phone via Bluetooth, the more stressed the player is, the slower his/her dragon on the screen is flying. With this you can monitor what kind of thoughts helps you to relax and what makes you stressed.I won twice… may be tech conferences are a relaxing experience after all!
