Bird flu test done in half an hour

Bird flu test done in half an hourScientists in Singapore have successfully developed a portable device that is said to detect the infamous H5N1 bird flu virus that gripped the world with fear and terror a few years’ back. Comprised of a unique platform designed by IBN, it uses a magnetic force to manipulate individual droplets containing silica-coated magnetic particles. The droplet itself has many functions, being a pump, valve, mixer, solid-phase extractor and real-time thermocycler. It will then be able to process complex biochemical tasks in a similar manner found in that of a traditional biological laboratory on a miniature scale. Initial trial runs have shown that IBN’s platform is extremely sensitive and yields results around 10 times faster than available tests. Another piece of good news - the final product could be up to 40 to a hundred times cheaper than existing solutions.

Album purchase experience from Amazon

Album purchase experience from Amazon

Purchasing a single MP3 track from Amazon and an album are two different experiences, where the former involved a mere click and download while the latter requires you to install the Amazon music tool (weighing in at 575kb) that installs quickly. Once up and running, you’ll need to click on the “1 Click Album Purchase” logo, opening the .AMZ file if you’re using Firefox (in IE7 it ought to trigger automatically though) just to see the Amazon MP3 Downloader pop up, commencing with the album download almost immediately. It takes approximately 90 seconds to download the entire album which is stored in the newly created “Amazon MP3″ folder in the Music folder for those using Vista. The album art is already embedded in the file so you don’t have to go looking around for one. All purchases are made via credit card.

Google to go against Second Life

Google to go against Second Life

Google won’t take the Microsoft route by buying up Second Life - no sir, it will actually come up with its own version of the famous online “life simulator”. Sounds like another great time waster - I wonder how many hours of productivity has been flushed down the drain when folks get too engrossed with their online avatars in order to escape from the harsh realities of life? According to Google, they are currently testing their own “3D virtual world technology” that will result in a similar Second Life experience. Well, Google has the advantage of incorporating some aspects of google Earth to turn their dream into one big, profitable project. Do you think this will pose a serious threat to Second Life if it was ever released, and will it garner as many users as WoW?

New Vaio L series from Sony

New Vaio L series from Sony

Sony has just rolled out a new Vaio L series notebook that can be hung from the wall just like one of those nifty large screen displays. This model you see here measures 22″ diagonally across and sure looks good in any living room. The only downside would be the high entry cost, as we all know that Vaios aren’t exactly the most affordable brand to gun for. If you think 22″ isn’t big enough to feed your senses, then you can always use a Vaio with DMB that can run on a Sony Bravia LCD display.

Hoax - GoogleTV waiting to be uncovered

Looks like the folks at Google Labs are certainly pretty creative when it comes to hiding an Easter Egg. Mark Erickson claims to have uncovered the method to access Google’s secret on-demand television service, where you are supposed to send an email to yourself with a little cut and paste message, and then log out and log in your GMail account. The GoogleTV icon will then appear over where the letter “M” is supposed to be after a number of log outs and log ins, but even though I’ve tried this method for over 20 times, nothing still turned up for me. What do you think? The jury is still out on this one, and there are staunch supporters on either side. Check out the video above and find out for yourself.

Update: GoogleTV is a hoax, people! Save your time from logging in and out countless times and play Halo 3 instead ;)
