As an iPhone owner, I can vouch for the fact that one of the things the iPhone was really lacking was a decent messaging application. Apollo IM has finally hit version 1.0, officially ending its beta status. Along with the upgraded number comes some super upgraded features. ApolloIM now features capabilities with not only AIM, but also MSN and ICQ. The upgrade also allows for multiple screen names to be signed on at once.
This is exactly what the iPhone needs! Sure, it might not be the prettiest iPhone app around, but in terms of functionality, and now, stability, ApolloIM will rock your socks. Just keep an eye out since there is no guarantee the software will keep working properly after the soon-to-come 1.1.1 iPhone firmware upgrade.

If you haven’t played Metal Gear Solid on the PSOne before, shame on you. Nevertheless, you’ll soon have a chance to redeem your honor when Konami releases the cellphone version of Metal Gear Solid. You might pooh-pooh at the idea, thinking that the portable version will lack the stunning 3D graphics (at that time) that is available on the console version, but the coding gods at Konami will still feature the complete 3D environment even on your humble cellphone. Entry level handsets probably can’t handle this, but a high end version like Sony Ericsson’s W53S will run the game smoothly as shown at the recent Tokyo Game Show 2007 event. I wonder how you’re going to lay the smack down on Psycho Mantis as you won’t be able to use the 2P controller trick to outsmart him this time…

Sony’s 17-inch Vaio line of laptops has gotten a much needed upgrade for those who like to watch flicks on-the-go: Sony has added in a Blu-Ray drive to their new AR600 series of notebooks. Users also now have the option of adding in CableCard support. You decide whether you want one or the other, or both in these new notebooks.
The AR6000 line will come in a few different flavors, with prices ranging from $1,700 at the low end and $3,300 at the high-end. Don’t worry, there is a pretty wide spectrum of in between prices too. Expect the new Vaio computers to start shipping in early October.

With the release of Halo 3 only hours away, Microsoft is claiming that the highly anticipated Xbox 360 game has already sold 1 million pre-order copies. This would mean that Halo 3 is a platinum seller even before its release. Microsoft is surely relying on Halo 3 to bring in the dough after the let down release of the Zune. Many stores are having special release hours, with lines flowing out the door of people eagerly awaiting midnight to come. As the minutes tick away, anticipation grows. And apparently, so do the sales. More Halo 3 stories

The pentagon has been said to work on robotic spying insects and has probably tried rat-mounted cameras, but this maple seed camera is one of the most interesting project to date. Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract to develop this device. The final version would contain an engine, telemetry, imaging sensors and… power of course.
If completed as planned, swarms of these could be released to get very fine information gathering – much finer than what’s possible today with a drone. They could find “a needle in a haystack” says Ned Allen, chief scientist at Lockheed’s fabled Skunk Works research arm. More at Sciam via Gizmodo

Computer Dynamics just announced their ultra-rugged Zone 1 computer. While most rugged computers (think toughbook) are designed to survive a drop or a splash of water, this one is certified to survive much harsher conditions such as sparks or explosions.
Obviously, it can also resist extreme cold and function normally in temperature as high as +60° C. It’s not really a powerful computer though: it is powered by a Pentium M 1.6Ghz with 2GB of memory and has a 15” flat-screen. I guess that a slower but functioning computer always beats a dead one.

You might have seen a “luxury” phone like this before: Vertu has carried this collection for a while. Today’s news is that they repurposed it into a design “inspired” by a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, including matching themes and ring tones. This particular phone is made of Titanium and uses the same screws and leather used in the F612.
Because it’s aimed at busy yuppies, it has Bluetooth and comes with an Aerius bluetooth headset and… a Ferrari valve (that could be used to reset the phone?).

BenQ hasn’t been hot company since the BenQ P50 fiasco but this slim T800 touch screen camera looks pretty sexy. It is only 0.59” thick (14.7mm) and has a nice 3” display from which the user can control all the settings.
The T800 is said to be smart and can adapt to many lighting conditions, whether it is to shoot portraits or movies, even in (somewhat) dark conditions. It has a 3x optical zoom, and uses SD-HC cards (SD cards certified for higher speeds for movie recording). It ships in Asia, Europe and Latin America in a couple of weeks.

A few years ago, we would have expected a Bluetooth release from Sennheiser, but surprisingly, they have only just announced their first Bluetooth headset. The VMX 100 features VoiceMax dual microphone technology, which can intelligently distinguish between background noise and human voices. That is SO last year.
The VMX 100 offers 5 hours of talk time or 100 hours of standby time, depending on how big of a talker you are. Sennheiser does have one thing working for them though. Their smart 3D ball joint design allows the user to move the mic boom to where ever feels the most comfortable and offers the best sound. Is this enough to beat out any competition? We think not. But if it offers some serious Sennheiser sound quality, they might have a chance. More Sennheiser stories

Mobility Today has the scoop on the (real) AT&T Tilt photo (the second phone from the right). There were plenty of fake photos out there over the week-end. They published this side-by-side photo with the Verizon Samsung i-760 (video) that we presented at CES (the first from the right).
While both devices are very attractive, I think that they are also quite bulky. I think that I’ll stick to my BlackJack for a little longer, waiting for the WM6 update…
