Cellphone projector on parade

Cellphone projector on paradeRemember the cellphone projector? Well Texas Instruments has theirs too, and it is nearly ready to be unleashed upon the general populace now after being previewed at a Pepcom event in New York. This prototype unit uses lasers as the light source, as the LED-based model is still kept under wraps at the laboratory so that further improvements can be made. This module would definitely be a great addition to any smartphone, as you can now run your PowerPoint presentations without the need for a notebook. While quality might not be up to par with standard projectors, at least this can be used in smaller settings such as a small group meeting or in a classroom.

Star Wars home theater, literally

Star Wars home theater, literally

Vic Wertz and Lisa Stevens are true blue Star Wars fans, as they have completely revamped their home theater system by hiring the lead designer from Episodes I and II. The end result is nothing short of jaw-dropping - three levels of seating, a fiber optic “star field,” and a host of life-sized figurines to make you feel at home in George Lucas’ imaginary world. No idea on how much it costs, but a bomb ought to be an apt description.

HomeHero Fire Extinguisher

HomeHero Fire Extinguisher It is important that every home should have at least one fire extinguisher, but somehow the huge red tank isn’t exactly easy on the eyes. The HomeHero Fire Extinguisher does away with the ugly and introduces a modern design that you wouldn’t mind having it complement your living room. Features include an ergonomic grip for a more intuitive operation along with a highly visible red safety pin on the back for easy removal. A rubber foot located at the bottom prevents it from scratching your precious marble floor or countertops. No word on pricing, but the HomeHero Fire Extinguisher can be found exclusively at Home Depot when released.

Verizon switches to UMTS-based LTE

Verizon switches to UMTS-based LTEFor their next generation network, at least. Verizon will be eschewing EVDO revision C in favor of the GSM Association’s standard that is currently known as 3G LTE (Long Term Evolution). This move is most probably attributed to the fact that Vodafone will be implementing similar technology abroad, and hence the need for a common platform. So far, download rates of 100Mbps and upload rates of 50Mbps have been touted for every 20MHz of spectrum, but bear in mind these are just theoretical figures. Real life performance will definitely be a far cry from the numbers posted here. Take EVDO for example - I tend to get 500kbps on a good day, which is less than 25% of the theoretical 2.1Mbps advantage. This network is expected to go live in 3 to 4 years.

Dell sets up shop in Russia

Dell sets up shop in RussiaDell has just announced that it will open a retail store in Russia, of all places. If you’re in Moscow anytime soon, do drop by the second floor in the new Gorbuskin Dvor retail centre. This Dell store will sell notebooks, desktops, servers, printers and other miscellanous Dell products with specially trained specialists on-hand to help you make the right purchase. According to Michael Dell, the Russian choice boils down to the country’s “rapidly growing computer market” that boast an 800% growth in the number of Internet users over the past 7 years to approximately 28 million. This Russian store will be the second store in Europe that is dedicated to selling Dell-only products.

Infolink phone from GE

Infolink phone from GEThe Infolink cordless phone from GE is pretty strange as it does more than facilitate conversations - it comes with the ability to hook up to the Internet, downloading weather, news, and your favorite RSS feeds for your perusal. These feeds can be customized so you’ll always stay tuned with what you want. I suppose this is great for sports buffs who must have the latest results on hand. The Infolink is a DECT phone, so you won’t have to worry too much over interference problems. A couple of Infolink handsets and a base station will retail for $180 when they roll out this coming October.

Bluetooth headsets to be simplified

Bluetooth headsets to be simplifiedBluetooth headsets are pretty successful cellphone accessories in their own right, but Sensory Inc. aims to make it even easier to use by merely talking to them. A prototype of this idea is already available, where holding down a button on a headset and saying “Pair mode” is all you need to hook up with your handset, instead of going through the hassle of hooking it up manually. Whenever there is an incoming call, all you need to do is say “yes” or “no”, depending on how you want to handle the call. Guess future Bluetooth chips will come with voice recognition capability, and this idea works really well especially since such headsets have no room for a display or knobs, hence making voice control the obvious choice.

iRiver W10 ready for the holidays?

iRiver W10 ready for the holidays?

Looks like the long awaited iRiver W10 portable media player will be released this November, at least in Korea anyway. Feature-wise, the W10 is just rich - how does a 3″ 480 x 272 TFT touchscreen display, WiFi with Skyhook’s GPS-like positioning and NAVTEQ maps, VoIP functionality, an integrated FM tuner, AOL XM radio streaming, support, and a miniSD memory card slot sound to you? The iRiver W10 will come in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB capacities along with compatibility with common audio and video formats such as MP3, WMA, OGG audio and MPEG-4, and WMV9. WinCE 5.0 is the operating system of choice for the W10. There is no word on pricing, but the very fact that NAVTEQ maps and POIs are US-centric make a Stateside release sometime down the road very real.

Sportline ThinQ pedometer

Sportline ThinQ pedometerThe ThinQ pedometer from Sportline is vastly different from the rest in the market as it comes in a credit card size that slips into your wallet without any hassle. The ThinQ works like any other pedometer though, keeping track of the amount of steps taken, the distance traveled, and most importantly, calories burned. Choose from green, orange, and blue colors. This works great for those who want to be discreet when it comes to their waistband commitment. No word on pricing though.
