Remember the drop dead gorgeous printers from Samsung that we looked at earlier this month? Well, apparently something as sleek as these aren’t worthy of a release on a Windows platform since they’re available exclusively only from Apple Stores. These new laser printers are known as the ML-1630 and SCX-4500, with the aim to aesthetically harmonize with any office or home environment while delivering high quality performance without any compromise. These new printers will be released in January next year, and some of the hardware improvements include a button-less touch-sensor panel, audible alerts, and blue LED scan-process indicators for a higher degree of user friendliness. The SCX-4500 and ML-1630 will retail for $299 and $199 respectively.

HP will also hop on the solid state drive (SSD) bandwagon by including that option in its professional series of laptops from next month onwards, citing faster operation times, prolonged battery life and a higher durability as the main reasons to do so. The HP Compaq 2710p, 2510p, 6910p, and 8000 series can be picked up along with a 64GB NAND flash memory drive should your budget permit, as that would add an extra $1,000 to the final retail price. Needless to say, HP expects the price to drop as SSDs gain acceptance in the marketplace and volumes increase.

Panasonic was first off the blocks to come out with a 103″ plasma HDTV, and now Runco aims to emulate them by releasing the CinemaWall XP-103DHD plasma display. It comes with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and incorporates DVI with HDCP as well as RS-232 inputs for you to connect to its outboard DHD Digital Controller. Initial impressions of the CinemaWall XP-103DHD have been pretty encouraging, with CePRO reporting “Runco’s next-generation DHD features a wealth of inputs and switching, and incorporates Runco’s ViVix II digital video processing technology, which prevents distortion-causing ‘double scaling’.” You can pick one up (if your living room fits it, of course) this December for a jaw-dropping $99,995.

Intel is reportedly going to add flash drives into servers, starting with a modest 32GB next year. Obviously, capacity is going to grow steadily to 64GB and 128GB from there.
Flash drives have many benefits, but the one that server managers might like the most is lower power consumption. This is becoming a real problem for companies that have extensive server farms because in many places, the backup power capacity is just too low, making it useless in case of a power outage.
Finally, Intel has a vested interest in pushing Flash memory because it’s a high-density semi-conductor, a field where Intel’s more advanced chip-making capabilities will give them an edge.

Here’s a video of a Samsung device that seems to be equipped with a “mini-joystick” or trackball very much like the BlackBerry 88xx series, the video is quite dark, so it’s hard to tell. On the (touch) screen, there is a mouse cursor moving around – quite unusual for a Windows Mobile Device. This video was shot at GITEX in Dubai by someone at DinarSoft. (Pocket PC thought points out that the HP HX4700 had a mouse cursor. It has also a high-res 640×480 display).

Actual photo of Navizon’s virtual GPS in action - Thanks Cyril!
Thanks to Navizon’s virtual GPS, the iPhone gets some real-time positioning capabilities. This is done by locating the nearest WiFi hotspots and cellular towers. Navizon also uses a database of geo-information built by its user community.
Go to Navizon’s blog to learn how to install the application. It is free for 15 days, then users can buy it for $24.99. Once installed, you can setup Google Map to use the virtual GPS and instantly know where you are – cool huh?

Intel has announced that it will introduce USB 3.0 next year, a standard that should be ten times faster than USB 2.0. Intel says that the speed boost is made possible by using fiber-optics in addition to the regular wires. And yes, the USB 3.0 port will be backwards-compatible with current USB ones. If Intel knows one thing, it’s that backwards-compatibility is key to evolving technology.
Current hard-drives, mouse and printers are probably too limited to make use of the new 4.8 Gigabit/sec bandwidth, but we could use the bandwidth to transport HD video signals and other intensive data migration.
Although USB 3 should work in 2008, it will take a couple more years to develop products.

Looks like the ultra stylish Sony VAIO notebooks have just been given an injection of creativity by Maya Hayuk, a New York-based artist. These new notebooks will be known as the VAIO Graphic Splash Maya Hayuk Edition notebooks, available in the “Grow” and “Never Stop” designs. The former aims to capture the feel of an organic forest with deep green, blue, and purple flowers growing wildly across the top of the notebook, while the latter reveals a “colorful, kaleidoscopic design that is decked in interlacing lines and spherical shapes.” The artwork is not just found on the exterior as these notebooks will come with matching wallpapers, a limited edition engraving and a pre-loaded video of Maya sharing the inspiration behind the designs. Each $2,500 purchase comes with a certificate of authenticity and Hayuk’s original signature.
