Book of Lights

Book of LightsI know (the right) books are supposed to bring enlightenment to the world with knowledge, but the Book of Lights takes on a more literal approach. Described as “the ultimate illuminated manuscript, Book of Lights’ pop up protagonist emits a tabletop warming glow. A wonderfully crafted and cleverly folded lamp springs to life from the hardy white pages of the bound book, powered by a simple low voltage adapter.” Inside you’ll find a trio of 0.06 watt LEDs that provide illumination, so don’t expect this to flood the room with a dazzling display. Great for those who want a calm and soothing look in their little corner in this world.

Lexmark X4550 makes WiFi possible

Lexmark X4550 makes WiFi possibleFor those who don’t want to be tethered to their printers can always check out the Lexmark X4550. This printer brings WiFi functionality to the home or office for a mere $129. Not only do you get 802.11g wireless printing, it has some pretty decent performance figures as well, with 226ppm in black and 18ppm in color. In addition to printing, the X4550 also doubles up as a copier and scanner (up to 48 bits). For avid shutterbugs, you can even print borderless photos with this. Sounds like a pretty spiffy all-in-one solution - why didn’t Lexmark throw in a fax function while they’re at it?

Fujitsu LifeBook U810 Tablet PC Review @ LaptopMag.com

The folks at Laptop Mag has pulled the wraps off of thier review of the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 Tablet PC. They liked the units good screen quality and long battery life. However an awkward keyboard, low performance scores and lack of mobile broadband help to pull its rating down to a 3.5 out of 5. “As far as UMPCs go, the U810 is a pretty strong contender, and you can’t beat the price for a unit with a usable built-in keyboard and Tablet functionality. It’s sleeker than the FlipStart, which is the only other clamshell unit on the market and costs $1,000 more but offers EV-DO. The OQO model 02 is even sleeker but costs about $300 more with integrated EV-DO. If you’ve been thinking about dipping your toe into the UMPC waters, the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 is an affordable way to do so, but some may want to wait for the mobile broadband version.”Fujitsu says it will offer an HSDPA version in February of 2008.http://laptopmag.com/Review/Fujitsu-LifeBook-U810-Tablet-PC.htm

InHand Electronics Announces e-ink military Soldier Flex PDA (SFPDA)

Engadget has word on some new military tech that looks promising.InHand Electronics Announces e-ink military Soldier Flex PDA (SFPDA). The Soldier Flex PDA (SFPDA) has been successfully demonstrated at the Future Force Warrior’s On-The-Move (OTM) exercises in Fort Dix, NJ. Whereas the electronics for most PDAs are challenged to run under 1W, the entire SFPDA has typical power consumption well under 1W, including the display and InHand’s PXA270-based Fingertip4 CPU board, along with Ethernet, USB, Bluetooth, and keypad interfaces. This reduced-power consumption is due to the unique low-power characteristics of electronic paper displays and InHand’s patented BatterySmart system software. The result: a ruggedized handheld with over 6 hours of run-time weighing in at less than one pound.More information on Fingertip4, BatterySmart, and InHand’s extensive portfolio of power-reducing hardware and software technologies can be found at http://www.inhand.com

XRCADE fitness centers for kids

XRCADE fitness centers for kids

Forget the gym - that’s way too mature for kids to get involved. The XRCADE fitness center would be more relevant, offering stuff that normal gyms have such as wall climbing and recumbent bicycles, but what would really attract the little ones would be arcade games such as DDR machines as well as snowboard simulators in addition to padded obstacle courses. There are half a dozen XRCADEs operating nationwide, with plans to roll out even more in due time. According to CEO Mike Hansen, “These kids grew up in such a technology-driven environment. With video games, they have control and they have a challenge. Put them on a treadmill and they don’t see any gratification. Give them a game and they get instant gratification.” Having said this, Wii Fit could be a sleeper hit when released.

AMD Tri-Core Drama

AMD Tri-Core Drama

Ever since AMD has announced its tri-core, most of the drama has been around the fact that it is most likely a defective quad-core, with one disabled unit. It is obvious that it would save AMD money to resell chips that would otherwise go to the trash bin and this might be a hint that AMD’s yields (the percentage of functional chips manufactured) aren’t that good compared to Intel, but quite frankly, selling partially functional parts it’s not new: Intel did this successfully with the 486 SX (a 486 CPU with the math co-processor disabled). Memory makers also build redundancy in their chips. The end goal is to improve the yields.

Now, should anyone expect AMD to come forward and beg for mercy for selling chips with a disabled core? I don’t think so. Branding it as “The AMD Three-Core Processor. It’s a Quad-Core, only broken” processor would be plain stupid from AMD’s part – nobody wants to buy something with “broken” in it. If they did that, they might as well shoot themselves in the head.

The word “broken” here is confusing at best – the processor is fully functional, simply slower. What matters is the value that consumers get per dollar spent and if a Tri-Core creates a new market segment that is decently priced, it’s not bad. There’s no need for additional drama.

Alaska Airlines to launch inflight WiFi

Alaska Airlines to launch inflight WiFi

Alaska Airlines has just announced that it will bring inflight wireless Internet connectivity sometime next year, based on Row 44’s satellite-based broadband connectivity solution. The system will first be tested on a next-generation Boeing 737 aircraft next spring. Depending on the outcome, plans will be formulated to equip its 114-aircraft fleet. Guess business passengers will love this feature since they can remain connected and continue working, while the younger crowd won’t be separated from their online peers during travel. Game buffs will also be pleased to catch up on their MMOPRGs and join guild wars while in transit. Is WiFi availability a criteria for you when it comes to flying?

Kensington sd200v Docking Station

Kensington sd200v Docking StationKensington has a new notebook docking station in the form of the sd200v which enables users to hook up to five different USB devices, speakers, and even a VGA display using DisplayLink technology. Great for those who feel that their productivity level will see a boost whenever there is more than one monitor hooked up to the notebook. The DualView feature enables users to view the exact same screen on another external display, or choose to extend their current desktop view instead for a larger screen real estate. The Kensington sd200v will be released in US later this month, and arriving in Europe next month. It will retail for $139.99 and €129/£89 respectively. The Kensington sd200v runs on Windows XP or Vista only, so Mac users are once again left out in the lurch.

New Sony Ericsson concept phone

New Sony Ericsson concept phone

Sony Ericsson is currently working on a new concept phone which claims to revolutionize the way we use our cellphones. Already? I thought the iPhone just about did that, are folks all over the world ready for another revolution? Time will tell, but here’s some skinny on it - the concept will be dubbed Konan: Beauty Renaissance 2.0. It sure as heck looks sweet, but the name sounds more bloodthirsty than anything else.
