Verizon to bring in Samsung SGH-X830

Verizon to bring in Samsung SGH-X830

Looks like the impossible will happen sometime next year, with word on the street having Verizon bring in the Samsung SGH-X830 and SCH-U470 handsets. No idea on what the handset will be called though, but a specific name would be very much less confusing than a combination of numbers and alphabets. Love the swivel design though - music enthusiasts who are looking forward to an upgrade will probably find this to be a very viable purchase.

TrekStor Vibez reviewed

TrekStor Vibez reviewed

The TrekStor Vibez has been reviewed by Anything but iPod, and the final analysis proved to it to be in the upper echelon where MP3 players are concerned.

Packed with tons of nifty features, superb audio quality, a logical interface, and a virtually bug- free firmware, the Vibez is a great device for the serious listener. TrekStor managed to get it right for almost everyone: MSC vs. MTP mode, file/folder vs. ID3 browsing, 5-band parametric EQ vs. bass/treble slider, open source codecs (Ogg, FLAC) vs. DRM support. No one should feel left behind: the Vibez works for the hardcore Linux hacker and the Windows Vista-toting businessman, for the tinkering sound engineer and the audiophile purist alike. Kudos to TrekStor for following this highly non-restrictive path.

Guess you can’t really go wrong with glowing remarks such as those. Definitely a viable alternative to the iPod nano, despite the latest generation nano having the ability to play video files which could prove the deciding factor.

Thanko improves on USB microscope

Thanko improves on USB microscope

I’m not too sure why anyone would be so obsessed with viewing a close up image of their skin every other hour, but Thanko provides the opportunity to do so with an improved USB-powered microscope. Heck, virtually anything is fair game - you can even gross everyone out by checking what your auditory canals look up close and personal. This USB-powered microscope works only on the Windows 2000/XP/Vista platform and features a 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 30x magnification. Each purchase comes with software that enables you to keep an archive of images for future reference. Great for those who want to self-diagnose that obscure mole.

Samsung SGH-A737 peek

Samsung SGH-A737 peekThere is a new Samsung handset in town, and this time it is the SGH-A737 that arrives to impress. Available from AT&T, the A737 comes in a slim slider form factor and features the black-and-red housing that would definitely remind one of the Brain Age 2 bundle with yet another weirdly colored DS Lite. Features include external music shortcuts for easy access, a QVGA display, and supports UMTS (and in all probability HSDPA-capable). No idea on the megapixel count when it comes to the digital camera, but keep your fingers crossed for a 3 megapixel auto-focus unit.

SClass amplifier stacks up

SClass amplifier stacks upMemphis Audio has a brand new amplifier known as the SClass (no relation to Mercedes Benz’s ultra luxurious saloon) that can be stacked on top of one another, featuring an “angel hair” finish complete with a silver heat sinl and single-sided connections for easy flush mounting. Each SClass amplifier boasts Class D switching technology that can deliver up to 500 watts of power in a compact, lightweight, and efficient design. No idea on price, but it sure as heck looks cool to me.

Old Playstation finds new lease of life

Old Playstation finds new lease of life

Harold Ilano has taken an old Playstation and applied his creativity to build a small robotic insect known as the Mercury BEAM robot. Other parts consist of a couple of motors as well as innards that keep it moving. Just like any suicidal insect, it would seek out sources of light (you won’t be able to zap this with a bug zapper though). For those who have an old Playstation console lying around somewhere, why not ‘recycle’ it and prove that reincarnation for electronics actually exists? As for the remainder of your Playstation games, there is always backwards compatibility with the PS3.

Philips remote control take tablet form

Philips remote control take tablet form

I know that computers these days come in a tablet form factor, but what about remote controls? Philips has done just that with this remote control featuring a tablet design, controlling up to 15 separate components while boasting a color LCD screen in the middle for easier navigation. Physical buttons make it easy to access just about any function on this remote control, and it will feel as though you were controlling other electronic devices via a game controller than a remote control. No availability date has been been set at this point of time, but chances are the price won’t surpass the $150 ceiling.

Sony creates ringle standard

Sony creates ringle standardSony is at it again, creating yet another new standard known as the “ringle”. The ringle will benefit from its own logo as well as brand associations, and chances are it will be nothing but a CD that contains a trio of tunes and a solitary ringtone. The main thrust of the ringle format is to draw attention to one track, while the other tracks consist of remixes or older songs from the same group. It is hoped that the ringle format will make CD choices more affordable to consumers, retailing for approximately $7 each. This format was developed by Sony BMG and adopted by Universal Music. Sony has plans to have half a century of ringles in retail stores by the time November rolls around. Will this be a success story or yet another Betamax?

Gamepark GP2X F-200 handheld console

Gamepark GP2X F-200 handheld console

There are currently two handheld consoles in the market that have a decent library of games - the DS Lite and the PSP. Gamepark’s GP2X F-200 handheld console could break the duopoly, although that would be an uphill task. It resembles a compressed white PSP and comes with equally similar controls. Features include a 3.5″ touchscreen display with 16 million color support at QVGA resolution, an SD memory card slot, and dual CPU cores that handle audio and video playback in addition to text and image file support. There is no word on pricing and availability as at press time, but we do know the GP2X F-200 can handle arcade and emulator games for a portable arcade cabinet experience.

Nokia revamps navigation plans

Nokia revamps navigation plansWhile the Nokia Maps mobile application was launched in February this year, the Finnish cellphone company has taken feedback from consumers into consideration in order to introduce a revision in the next iteration of Nokia Maps. Some of the changes include a new streamlined user interface, improved nearby search detailed categories, and a bonus 3-day trial Navigation license. The Map Loader was also tweaked to transfer maps up to 10 times faster than its predecessor whilst enabling downloading of voice guidance files. Map coverage will also be updated, bringing the grand total of covered countries to more than 150. For those who want to download the new versions of Nokia Maps and Nokia Map Loader can do it here.
