The Wii Zapper from Nintendo will not be a standalone accessory as it is bundled with Link’s Crossbow Training software. Those familiar with the Legend of Zelda series will definitely be at home with this software that provides a demonstration on how the Wii Zapper will be used in other games. The casing holds both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers in a single unit, offering (purportedly) precise targeting. Will we see a 21st century version of Duck Hunt soon? Nevertheless, expect more (casual) shooting games to appear on the Wii, and at $19.99, the Wii Zapper won’t really take a big bite out of your wallet. Read more about it at Nintendo’s press release.

For those who want to pick up an unlocked iPhone, you’ll be pleased to note that iPhoneSIMFree‘s retail partners have begun sales of iPhone unlocking software. To date, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, iPhone4arab.com in Saudi Arabia, and Wireless Imports in the US have licensed the software from iPhoneSIMFree which can be purchased online for $99. Take note that there is no guarantee of compatibility with future iPhone firmware, so this could be just a temporary measure.

Looks like SanDisk aims to really bite into Apple’s domination of the portable media player market by releasing the Sansa View. This PMP will have the iPod nano in it’s sights, so let us have a look at how it fares specification-wise. For starters, it won’t be as slim despite measuring a svelte 8.8mm, but it does come with a 2.4″ 320 x 240 resolution display and supports video playback at 30fps. It will come in 8GB and 16GB capacities, retailing for $149.99 and $199.99 respectively. An integrated FM tuner, a microSD memory card slot for expansion options, and a built-in microphone completes the list of features when the Sansa View is released this fall. Would you choose this over the new 3G nano?

And I don’t mean just the memory effect where these rubber wristbands return to their original shape after being stretched - they actually contain flash memory to help you tote your data in style. Available from Strapya World, you will be able to choose from Mickey, Minnie, and Stitch designs. Too bad they just come with 256MB of memory which is actually a pittance these days, but I guess your kids would be more interested in the Disney character than the amount of information they can store around their wrist. Each $24.26 purchase comes in an individual box and is compatible with both PC and Mac platforms.

The Asustek BC-1205PT Blu-ray drive speeds up next generation DVD recording, capable of burning in data at 12X DVD+/- write, 4X DVD+/-R (dual layer) and 5X DVD-RAM speeds. This is made possible by a SATA interface that offers users with five times faster data transmission rates compared to DMA33 standards. You will be able to access your Blu-ray media at data transmission speeds of up to 4.5MB/s, which is roughly triple the speed of standard DVD transmission. Unique features include Asustek’s very own DDSS2 (Double Dynamic Suspension System 2) that minimizes vibration caused by the spindle motor and resonance between components, Liquid Crystal Tilt for enhanced pick up head accuracy during recording and playback of discs with uneven curvature and thickness and Smart Laser Driver for stable recording quality. No word on pricing and availability though.

Looks like ISPs are turning a blind eye when it comes to bad behavior on their network, where an IP address that is part of a botnet or even a phishing site were allowed to continue up to several months, putting users of the network at risk of identity theft and more. While this news is hardly surprising (no thanks to Mr. Apathy), things could only get worse as tens of millions of infected systems could potentially be a supercomputer that is not controlled by a government or mega-corporation but by criminals instead. Have you taken all the necessary steps to make your online computing experience as safe as possible?

Lego has just unveiled the remote control Monster Dino 3-in-1 construction system that boasts a brand new Power Functions System that was specifically designed to bring Creator sets to life via the integration of a couple of interchangeable motors. These motors enable the Monster Dino to walk and roar by simply touching the corresponding button. You play the puppet master via an independent hand-unit, enabling the Monster Dino to move both forwards and backwards while emitting a bloody roar. I wonder if this will be able to scare cats away from your favorite couch - it will definitely be a hit with your kids though. You can always re-assemble the Monster Dino to resemble a tail-whipping crocodile and scuttling deadly spider. The Lego Monster Dino 3-in-1 construction set is now available, retailing for £69.99.

It has been announced that China will have a different next-generation optical disc standard called CH-DVD. It has been developed by the Tsinghua University. CH-DVD is similar to HD-DVD, but uses Chinese intellectual property (IP). The 1080p-capable format will be launched shortly before the Beijing Olympics.
Besides demonstrating that China can now produce advanced technology, there are also millions or billions of dollars at stake, in licensing fees (I woud guess $20 or more per player). By having its own format, China will save a ton of money. At least, that’s the plan but it mostly failed with EVD, China’s past attempt at bypassing the DVD format.

Toshiba has just announced a spanking new surface mount white LED known as the TL12W01-D which boasts a typical flux of 30 lumens from a driving current of 250mA. It targets residential and commercial lighting applications which use standard incandescent bulbs, measuring 10.5mm x 5.0mm x 2.1mm. Not only that, it can also be used for space-limited applications that require high-brightness LCD backlighting. Samples of the Toshiba TL12W01-D surface mount LED are currently available, so one can expect to see these being used in commercial products sometime down the road.
